Rep. Cuellar Announces $1,500,000 in Federal Funding for the Las Americas Roma Logistics & Industrial Park
On August 16, 2023, U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28) announced $1,500,000 in federal funding for the Las Americas Roma Logistics & Industrial Park. $1,000,000 will be provided by Congressionally directed funding, and $500,000 will be provided by USDA Rural Business Development grant funding.
The funds will be used to develop the 328-acre Park’s infrastructure, including street development, drainage, lighting, water and wastewater systems, gas lines, electricity, and telecommunications. Upon completion, the Park will feature more than 25 warehouses and create employment opportunities for over 300 individuals.
“As South Texas continues to grow, so too does our demand for proper industrial facilities.
I secured this Congressionally directed funding to provide the City of Roma with a new logistics and industrial park that will attract future investors and bring goodpaying jobs,” said Dr. Cuellar, a Senior Member of the House
Appropriations Committee. “I remain committed to delivering federal resources that bring jobs to our communities, bolster our industrial capabilities, and grow our economy. Thank you to Roma Mayor Jaime Escobar, Jr., and Roma Economic Development President Joel Hinojosa, Jr., for working with me to bring the Las Americas Roma Logistics & Industrial Park to fruition. In Congress, I will continue to fight
for Roma.”
“The City of Roma’s Industrial and Logistics Park, Las Americas, will have a transformative economic impact on Roma and all of South Texas and neighboring communities throughout northern Mexico. The city council’s goals, along with those of Roma’s Economic Development Corporation, have been to improve the quality of life for our constituents by forging critical
public and private partnerships that will leverage significant improvements in infrastructure and overall economic development that will create good-paying jobs for the citizens of Roma,” said Roma Mayor Jaime Escobar, Jr.
“We are grateful to all our partners, especially Dr. Henry Cuellar, who helped secure this park’s 1-milliondollar earmark. His work with other federal agencies, such as EDA and USDA, has also helped
secure additional support for what arguably may be Roma’s most significant economic development venture in the last 50 years.” Dr. Cuellar is a strong supporter of expanded industrial capabilities in South Texas. He previously secured $3,000,000 in federal funding for the Mission Economic Development Corporation to develop and enhance Shary Village Industrial Park.

DHR Health to Host its 17th Annual “Fishing for Hope” Tournament
Benefiting the Uninsured through the Hope Family Health Center
Get ready to make a splash at the 17th Annual “Fishing for Hope” Tournament presented by DHR Health. The tournament will be held at Jim’s Pier on South Padre Island on August 26, 2023.
More than just a fishing tournament, the event is also an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on our community, as all proceeds will benefit the Hope Family Health Center of McAllen.
The Hope Family Health Center is a non-profit family healthcare facility dedicated to serving the healthcare needs of uninsured families living the Rio Grande Valley.
The center provides various primary medical, counseling, integrated behavioral health, peer support, case management, and wellness programs. All services are provided free of charge through the generous efforts of the center’s volunteer physicians and medical staff.
To date, the yearly Fishing for Hope Tournament, coordinated by DHR Health, has raised over $4 million for the center. “This year, more than ever, we need everyone’s help in reaching our fundraising goal,” said Marissa Castañeda, Senior Executive Vice President for DHR Health.
“Due the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of uninsured individuals—those served by the Hope Family Health Center— has risen drastically in the Rio Grande Valley. So if you’re looking for some family-friendly fun, while hoping to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate, please come out and join us!”
For those interested in joining DHR Health’s fundraising efforts, there is still time to become a valued event sponsor. Several sponsorship tiers are available to your company or organization— platinum, gold, silver, or bronze. Each tier offers distinct benefits, including angler registration tickets to tournament social events, company logo recognition in the local newspaper, a company banner displayed at Jim’s Pier, and ongoing company name announcements during event activities.
To become an event sponsor or for more information about the 17th Annual DHR Health Fishing for Hope Tournament, please call Minerva Echols or a team member at the DHR Health Events Department at (956) 3623140.

DPS Remind Students, Parents, Teachers and School Administrators about iWatchTexas Program
The iWatchTexas program is a critical resource for reporting suspicious activity in schools and communities in order to help prevent dangerous attacks.
Everyone is urged to download the free iOS or Android iWatchTexas mobile app prior to the start of the school year. Tips can be reported via the website, the mobile app or by calling 844-643-2251. All reports are confidential. For information on how to use iWatchTexas, you can view this how-to video.
Remember, iWatchTexas is not for emergencies. If there is an emergency on a school campus or in a community, call 911 immediately. Also, the program can be used to report suspicious activity in areas other than schools.
The Texas School Safety Center
is another useful tool for school security. It’s part of Texas State University and offers valuable resources on school safety for parents and members of the school community. It’s designed to be a central location for research, training and technical information for all school districts, charter schools and community colleges in the state. The Texas School Safety Center has staff experienced in school safety and can provide technical assistance or training, conduct program evaluations or offer resources to schools. Classes are also available online for the community.
Finally, in 2021, DPS implemented the Active Shooter Alert System. This is not schoolspecific but could be used in the event of a shooting at or near
a school. The alert system is designed to notify people in close proximity to an active shooter situation through cell phones, local broadcast media and Texas Department of Transportation Dynamic Message Signs (DMS). These alerts are used to encourage people to avoid the area or shelterin-place, when a situation arises. DPS will issue an Active Shooter Alert when an agency submits a request that meets the requirements. Those include an active shooter in the agency’s jurisdiction, determining that the alert would assist people near the active shooter’s location, verification of the active shooter situation through a preliminary investigation by the requesting agency and that the shooter’s last known location is identifiable.
Life insurance can help
If your loved ones financially depend on you, you might want to buy life insurance.
Proceeds from a life insurance policy can cover burial expenses. And beneficiaries could use the money to help pay mortgage or tuition costs.
Some policies provide benefits to you while you are alive.
There are two basic types:
•Term life insurance is the simplest and least expensive. It covers you for a set number of years—until age 60, for instance.
•Permanent life insurance provides coverage throughout your life as long as you pay your premiums. These policies are complex, so it’s a good idea to talk with a financial planner. Need to track down a missing life insurance policy? You can search for a policy or annuity through the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. Have a question about insurance? Call the Texas Department of Insurance at 800-252-3439 or visit www.tdi.texas.gov.
The Veterans Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) will be at Starr County Courthouse Annex Building every Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. till 4:00 p.m. to assist local veterans with medical needs. Primary Care, Women’s Health, audiology, laboratory and Telehealth Services. For appointments or information, please call 1-855-864-0516.
