Medina EC Warns of Scammers Don’t fall victim Scammers aren’t new, but there has been an uptick in attempts to con people out of money. Utility scams often involve an individual or group posing as an employee of Medina EC, or another local utility. They use threatening language in order to get you to share your credit card or bank account information. Don’t fall victim to these types of scams: • SCAM: Someone calls you and demands payment with threats of disconnecting. Reality: Medina EC will never call and demand payment with threats of disconnection. If you

are late on your bill, you will receive an email or mailed letter from us with instructions on how to pay. We only call before disconnecting as a courtesy and will not ask for payment. You must pay using SmartHub, the automated payment system or by coming in to our office. For security purposes, our employees cannot take credit card information over the phone. • SCAM: Someone shows up at your property to collect money. Reality: Medina EC will never collect payment in the field. All payments must be made by coming to our office, using SmartHub, or our automated phone system. Our crews and contractors do need to access your property at times to complete jobs. Medina EC workers can be identified by their

uniform. All contractors carry credentials authorizing them for work. Feel free to ask anyone representing the cooperative for their credentials. If you get power from another utility, be familiar with how they collect payments. When in doubt, always hang up and call your utility to check with them. Never let someone in your home unless you called for an appointment. Medina EC wants to make sure you avoid any and all types of scams that could put you or your financial information in jeopardy. If you have questions about your account or work being done on your property, call us at 1-866-MEC-ELEC (632-3532) or see the list of our current projects at MedinaEC.org in the Latest News section.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, certain foods may help people fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly while others may compromise a person’s ability to enjoy a restful night’s sleep. In lieu of white bread, refined pastas and sugar-laden baked goods, all of which can reduce serotonin levels, the NSF recommends whole grains. The buildup of serotonin in the brain during periods of wakefulness can contribute to the onset of sleep later in the day. If serotonin levels in their brains are disturbed, then people may experience difficulty falling asleep. The NSF also recommends almonds and walnuts, which contain melatonin, a hormone that helps to regulate the sleep/wake cycles. In addition, foods that are high in lean protein that contain the amino acid tryptophan also may increase the production of serotonin, potentially contributing to a restful night’s sleep.

Ringgold Elementary Hosted an STC Starr Psych Club- Crossing Disciplines Conference End of the Year Social for Staff

Ringgold Elementary staff gathered with an end of the year event titled “TEAM BUILDING.” Presenter and Motivator “Happy” entertained staff with wonderful, and cheerful tales and a motivational boost of support with laughter. Not only did staff giggle, yet they enjoyed a barbecue entrée; plus the pot lock of sweet deserts that were voluntarily donated and prepared by each department. Thank you to our R.G.C.C.I.S.D. Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Alfredo Garcia for visiting in support our Raider event. Ringgold Elementary thanks all of our staff for dedicating their extended time to our Raider students. We welcome you back for the 2018-2019 school year. Go RAIDERS!!!!

The Starr County Campus Psychology Club of South Texas College hosted Crossing Disciplines Conference 5th Edition “Into the Marketing Field” at the STC Starr County Campus Auditorium. Crossing Disciplines explores different careers/fields with guest speakers who specialize in those areas, since some of our members are non-psych majors and the event is always open to the entire community. Even the psych majors

can benefit from learning about the different fields, for a possible second major and/or minor, or just for knowledge-sake and exposition. On this 5th Edition, the speaker was Raziel Cano- State Farm Arena Marketing Director. Raziel elaborated on his career and how he made it to where he is now—sharing his obstacles, achievements, motivation, future goals, and tied in how he uses psychology in his profession

of marketing. Raziel has met famous celebrities (athletes-WWE wrestlers, singers, etc.) and shared some pictures of events he has hosted at the arena. At the end, there was a Question and Answer Session by the Audience as well as a Meet & Greet Session. Mr. Alex Sarabia (STC Psychological Science Faculty) served as Moderator and presented Raziel with a certificate of appreciation for serving as speaker at the end of the presentation.

DPS Reminds Texans to Stay Prepared as Hurricane Season Continues As the 2018 hurricane season continues, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is reminding Texans to evaluate their emergency plans now and monitor weather forecasts for the development of potential storms. Historically, August and September are the most active months during the Atlantic hurricane season (which began June 1 and continues through Nov. 30). “As hurricane season continues, we are reminded of the lessons learned in the wake of Hurricane Harvey,” said Governor Greg Abbott. “The state is proactively allocating the necessary resources to protect lives and property in the event of another hurricane, and it is imperative that Texas families do the same. When severe weather hits, being adequately prepared can mean the difference between

important for all Texans. “As we approach the oneyear anniversary of Hurricane Harvey, the type of devastation that hurricanes can cause is on the minds of many Texans,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “DPS wants to remind all Texas residents to take precautions now to prepare for the peak months of hurricane season. Early and adequate preparations are of paramount importance, and Texans should take precautions to protect themselves, their loved ones and their property well before a storm hits.” For more information about hurricanes and tips on how to prepare for the 2018 hurricane season, visit the DPS website or ready.gov. life and death, and I encourage all Texans to take an active role in ensuring their own safety this hurricane season.” All Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coastal areas are subject to hurricanes and tropical storms. It is possible for a storm to severely impact our state, even prior to or without making direct landfall in Texas. Hurricanes can cause widespread damage, and winds can vary from 74 to 157 miles per hour (or higher). Additionally, hurricanes and tropical storms can spawn tornadoes, create dangerous coastal water conditions, including storm surges, and cause extensive flooding damage. The rainfall associated with a tropical system can also have an extremely wide reach, so monitoring changing weather conditions during hurricane season is critically

You’re in good hands.

The layout of Roma reflects the Spanish tradition of a plaza, lined with continues structures with a church as its focal point. In general, the structures in the plaza are fronted by stone or brick “banquetas” (sidewalks) and form walled compounds with expansive courtyards in the Spanish/Moorish tradition. The impact of the Roma Plaza on the community was and is still being felt at the present day. The plaza was the center of commerce and trade in early Roma. During and after the Mexican-America War Roma received a huge economic boost when a sudden growth in trade occurred. Roma became the head of the steamboat traffic on the Rio Grande when sailing the river was not safe beyond this point. Throughout the 19th century, Roma prospered as goods from Europe and the Eastern U.S. passed through its plaza on its way to Mexico. Today the Roma Plaza is under going a complete face lift with new “banquetas”, redone courtyards and the renovation of some of the buildings lining the southern part of the plaza.

Help Keep Your Child Safe – Give Your Child A Boost!

Caution: Don’t Move Your Child to a Seat Belt Too Soon Unfortunately, seat belts do not come in one-size-fits-all. In fact, the seat belt that is designed to save an adult’s life in a crash does not fit a young child. And, the poor fit of the seat belt can actually cause serious injuries or even death during a crash. Many parents are under the impression that a child can be moved to the vehicle seat belt system when they have outgrown the weight limits of their child safety seat. Most conventional forwardfacing child safety seats have a

5-point harness system that can be used until at least 40 pounds. However, most children weigh 40 pounds long before they are tall enough to fit in the vehicle lap/ shoulder belt. Children do not fit well in the vehicle lap/shoulder belts that were designed for adults who are at least 4 feet 9 inches tall. Instead of fitting properly over the lower hips, the lap belt rides over the soft tissues of the abdomen and can cause severe injury or death. The shoulder portion of the belt hits the child’s neck or face instead of lying flat across the chest. This causes many children to place the shoulder belt behind their back, leaving them with no upper body protection. A booster seat ‘boosts’ the child up so the lap/shoulder belt will fit correctly and provide protection in a crash. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Agent, Yolanda Morado, Starr County, reminds parents that correctly using a booster seat can protect a child from being thrown around the vehicle or being totally ejected in a crash. In a crash, children who are incorrectly restrained by a lap/shoulder belt are likely to sustain serious injuries to internal organs, as well as the head and spinal cord. In fact, these abdominal and spinal injuries are medically referred to as “Seat

Belt Syndrome.” Motor vehicle crashes continue to be one of the leading causes of death and injury for children 14 and under. Car seats, including boosters, have been proven to be effective in preventing injuries and deaths and studies show that booster seats can reduce the risk of injury by 59 percent. But children in this age group are the least likely to be properly restrained. Surveys conducted during 2017 by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute found that only 26.4% of 5-9 year olds in Texas were correctly restrained. In Texas fatalities in the 5-9 year old age group are nearly twice as high as the national rate. The law in Texas requires children under 8 years old, unless taller than 4 feet 9 inches, to be in a child restraint system according to the manufacturer’s instructions. According to the law, an 8 year old can legally ride in the seat belt, but only a small percentage of 8 year olds are big enough to fit the seat belt correctly. While not every child who is 4 feet 9 inches will fit the seat belt — due to some children being longer in the torso and some children having longer legs — the average child reaches 4 feet 9 inches at age 11! Best practice is to keep the child in a booster seat until the lap/shoulder belts

fits, which is usually sometime between ages 8-12. The injury rate and high costs associated with medical care and lost productivity for families is huge. Booster seats are an affordable solution for protecting children in the 4 to 8-plus age group. The cost of booster seats is low; generally between $15 to $40 for a basic booster seat. Researchers estimate that a $30 booster seat generates nearly $2,000 in benefit to society from reduced health-care expenses. Booster seats offer a low-cost solution to a high-cost problem. When is your child ready for the seat belt? Take the Five Step Test 1. Does the child sit all the way back against the auto seat? 2. Do the child’s knees bend comfortably at the edge of the vehicle? 3. Does the belt cross the shoulder between the neck and arm? 4. Is the lap belt as low as possible, touching the thighs? 5. Can the child stay seated like this for the whole trip? If you answered ‘no’ to any of these questions, your child needs a booster seat to make both the shoulder belt and the lap belt fit right for the best crash protection. Your child will be more comfortable, too!

Confident children can grow up to become confident adults who are in better positions to reach their potential and find success. Parents can help their children build self-esteem that can benefit them throughout their lives. Children with healthy selfesteem may be confident to try new things, feel good about themselves and feel better prepared for life’s challenges than youngsters with low selfesteem. Low self-esteem can lead to feelings of insecurity and doubt and encourage children to focus on the times they’ve failed rather than succeeded. The resource Kids Health also notes that low self-esteem may lead to kids being self-critical. While parents may think they can foster self-esteem in children by consistently praising them and telling them they are wonderful, experts disagree. According to Jim Taylor, author of the book, “Your Kids Are Listening: Nine

Messages They Need to Hear from You,” rather than layering on the praise, parents can help kids become more competent in their worlds, which will help children develop self-esteem in turn. This may mean taking a step back and letting kids take risks and work through their own problems. Consistently telling children they’re great at everything never raises the bar, potentially discouraging them from trying to achieve greater goals. When they venture into “the real world,” artificially praised kids may be in for a surprise. Parents also can boost selfesteem by giving children choices, which may help them feel empowered. Parents can facilitate age-appropriate choices, such as letting kids pick their own between breakfast foods or their own clothes, that can gradually prepare kids for more difficult choices. Parents may be tempted to do

everything for their children, especially if it is faster or if parents want to ensure a task is done correctly. But letting kids do things themselves helps them to learn new skills. Even if kids don’t perform tasks perfectly, allowing them to do things themselves teaches them about approaching challenges, making mistakes and learning by practice. One-on-one with kids is another great way for parents to build their children’s selfesteem. One-on-one time gives parents an opportunity to initiate discussions while giving kids chances to express themselves. One-on-one sessions provide opportunities to discuss problems or issues that may require some advice. Knowing they have a voice and that their views matter can be one of the easiest ways to help children develop confidence and self-esteem.

Camel crickets look scary but are harmless If you spend some time rummaging about in the brush turning over rotting logs and scuffling through the leaf litter, sooner or later, you’re certain to uncover a camel cricket. However, since they’re nocturnal, few people have seen one. Several species of these unusual insects exist in Texas; none are pests but they may occasionally become a nuisance. Their appearance makes them easy to identify. Their body is up to an inch or more long and they have a pair of thin antennae that are much longer than the body. The hind legs are like those of a grasshopper, large and capable of

making hops of several f e e t . Unlike most crickets, camel crickets lack wings. That means that they can’t chirp. If a cricket you observe chirps, it’s a field cricket and not a camel cricket. The most distinctive feature, which gives it its name, is the brown to tan body’s hump-backed shape, like a camel. The head is bent down and the back arched up. Here in the south they can have three reproductive cycles a year. Their life cycle consists of incomplete metamorphosis. The egg hatches into a nymph which is a miniature adult form. It simply grows into a larger adult without going through larval and pupa

stages. As an adult it can live 2 or 3 years. They’re omnivores, able to eat almost any organic matter including tiny insects. They do require dark, moist environments and are frequently found in damp caves which accounts for them also being called cave crickets. When occasionally found in homes, it’s usually in some dark, damp corner of a basement but they’re entirely harmless. You won’t find them in dry or well lit areas. If you like to fish, crickets make good bait for bluegills, sunfish and catfish. On first glance camel crickets resemble a large spider and may seem scary but they’re just an interesting part of our wildlife diversity.

Rio Grande City CISD Migrant Program

Project Smart 2018 - The Rio Grande City CISD Migrant Program kicked off the summer by encouraging and promoting mathematic skills. Through Project Smart, migrant students in grades K-8th received home and school visits from educators that worked with them on a one-to-one basis, to enhance their math abilities. Backpacks with school supplies were given to each participant to help them along the Project Smart curriculum. Lessons were taught through hands-on activities, videos, and books. To promote and show the value of education, parents were also invited and encouraged to be a part of their child’s learning

during the lessons. Mrs. Virginia Gonzalez, Director of Federals Program, Veronica Garcia, Migrant Education Coordinator, Project Smart teachers and staff would like to thank all the migrant parents and families, who so kindly opened their doors and invested in our students’ education and helped make Project Smart 2018 a true success. A Bright Beginning - The Rio Grande City CISD Migrant Program, A Bright Beginning, initiated their summer of 2018 by providing one-to-one tutoring for migrant students, ages 3 through 5, that have not begun their formal education. This homebased

program allows migrant students develop early literacy and math skills, in efforts to help them stay abreast with their peers. Participants were provided with backpacks containing school supplies to help facilitate their learning through hands-on, concrete activities and experiences. Mrs. Virginia Gonzalez, Director of Federals Program, Mrs. Veronica Garcia, Migrant Education Coordinator, and A Bright Beginning staff would like to thank all the migrant parents and families, who so kindly opened their doors and allowed us to come in to work with their children. Because of your support, A Bright Beginning was a success.
