NOVENA “Miraculous Prayer” Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it, Dear Jesus, and place it within your own heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail.

RIO GRANDE CITY CELEBRATES THE REASON FOR THE SEASON DURING 15TH ANNUAL H-E-B FEAST OF SHARING EVENT
Annual Dinner Brings Rio Grande City Community Together on Thursday, December 6 at Fort Ringgold Elementary
The holidays are a special time for H-E-B. It’s a time to give thanks to its customers, and a time to bring family, friends and neighbors together for a beloved annual tradition – the H-E-B Feast of Sharing. This year’s event took place on Thursday, December 6, from 5-8 p.m., at Fort Ringgold Elementary located at 1 Fort Ringgold St. “Giving back to the community is what H-E-B was founded on more than 115 years ago, and it’s really at the heart of who we are as a company,” said Yvonne Loflin, H-E-B Director of Public Affairs, Border Region. “The Feast of Sharing gives us a wonderful opportunity to bring the Rio Grande City community together to break bread, enjoy one another’s company, and get the holiday season off to a beautiful start here in South Texas.” During the free community event, hundreds of volunteers served a feast to more than 2,000 residents. The menu included glazed ham with gravy, mashed potatoes, a vegetable medley and dessert. Preparing for a massive, large-scale feast of this size is no easy feat. It takes an army of volunteers to prepare 750 pounds of glazed ham, 35 gallons of gravy, 95 gallons of mashed potatoes, 55 gallons of vegetable medley, 2,500 slices of apple pie and 2,500 rolls. The H-E-B Feast of Sharing dinners were founded in 1989 and are a facet of H-E-B’s Food Bank Assistance Program. The program works year-round to prevent hunger in Texas and Mexico. Today, 31 dinners are held across Texas and in Mexico, with more than 250,000 meals served to communities.

a plan in the federally facilitated exchange. Here are the three things Texans need to know: 1. The deadline to sign up for coverage is fast approaching. Texas consumers have until Dec. 15 to sign up for coverage that starts on Jan. 1. Texans who don’t enroll by the deadline can’t get 2019 coverage unless they qualify for a special enrollment period. Consumers can visit HealthCare. gov and CuidadodeSalud.gov to preview 2019 plans and prices and sign up for coverage today. 2. Now is the time for Texas consumers to go to HealthCare. gov or CuidadodeSalud.gov to update their information or add it for the first time, and select the plan that best meets their needs. We are encouraging Texans who need health insurance to join the millions of people who have gone to HealthCare.gov
and found health insurance. The plans on HealthCare.gov are comprehensive and offer: Annual checkups at no extra cost. Coverage for doctor visits, prescription drugs, and certain preventive care with no out-ofpocket costs. 3. Nationally, average premiums have decreased and the number of plans have increased on the federal exchange for 2019. For the first time since Healthcare. gov started offering coverage, average premium rates for a benchmark silver plan in 2019 have gone down across the 39 states that use the federal platform. Consumers have more plans to choose from to find the best fit for themselves. There are 23 more issuers on the federal exchanges for 2019 than there were in 2018. And 29 issuers are expanding their service area into
new counties. Consumers should come back to HealthCare.gov to compare plans and prices. They may be able to find a plan that saves them money and better meets their health needs. Help is available! Texas consumers can get help filling out their application in three ways: •By phone. Consumers can call the exchange’s call center at 1-800-318-2596. •In-person help. Consumers can use the “find local help” tool on HealthCare.gov to see if they can get in-person help in their community. •Health insurance agents and brokers. Agents and brokers can help consumers enroll through the exchange or handle the whole process. Search for health insurance agents and brokers by using the “find local help” tool. Don’t delay. If you want coverage by Jan. 1, you must sign up by Dec. 15.

Texas Roads Have Not Had a Fatality Free Day Since November 7, 2000 What if … We Could End the Streak! It has been 18 years since Texas could claim a day where there were no fatalities on our roads. The fatalities add up to more than 66,000 people killed on Texas roadways over the past 18 years. According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) the leading causes of these deadly crashes continue to be failure to stay in one lane, alcohol and speed. TxDOT is promoting the “End the Streak” campaign to help end motor vehicle fatalities in Texas. What if we all drove like the driver we would want in front of us, beside us and in back of us. Ending this streak of needless tragedy on Texas roadways is a shared responsibility. What if for one day everyone took responsibility for themselves and their friends and there were no drunk drivers on our roads. And
there was not one person driving somewhere to drink without a plan for a sober ride home — and no underage drunk drivers were to be found anywhere. What if there were no distracted drivers on the road. No teens were riding with other teens, which is the main source of their distractions and against the law according to the Graduated Driver License Law. What if no youth or adult was driving while using a cell phone and totally concentrating on their driving. What if there was no driver speeding down the road and all were driving within the speed limit, including slowing down for construction and emergency vehicles, and driving more slowly and cautiously when weather conditions are bad. What if we all took time to put on our seatbelts and make sure
that all of our passengers were also buckled up. And, that all children were riding in the correct car seat for their age, weight and developmental stage. What if the car seat had been inspected by a certified child passenger safety technician to make sure it was being used correctly and installed correctly.
What if there were no drowsy drivers on the road and every driver, including commercial drivers, made sure they were well rested and prepared for the trip. What if every driver made sure their vehicle and tires were in good condition and everyone drove defensively and civilly so that every car was treated as if
the lives of the people inside were important. What if all drivers were looking out for each other. What if all of these things could be done on the same day and Texas could once again enjoy a day where there was not one fatality on our roads? Then, we could put an end to this terrible streak of roadway deaths in Texas — and it
would bear repeating! Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Community Health Educator Yolando Morado, Starr County reminds us that these do not have to be just rhetorical questions. For information on the End the Streak campaign visit: http://www.txdot. gov/inside-txdot/media-center/ psas/end-streak.html

More than 900,000 people landed in the hospital, double the number of many seasons. More than 80,000 people died, far exceeding the previous high of 56,000 for a flu season over the past 30 years. The hospitalizations and deaths were mainly among people 65 and older. As people age, their immune system typically weakens and their ability to ward off diseases declines. Moreover, the flu virus can cause complications for those already struggling with chronic health problems. Last year’s heavy toll underscores the importance of getting a flu vaccine as soon as possible. The shot can prevent infections and reduce the severity of complications from the disease. If you’re enrolled in Medicare
doctor, health clinic or pharmacy agrees not to charge you more than Medicare pays. There’s no deductible or co-payment. If you were vaccinated last year, you’ll still need another shot this year, since your immunity to flu viruses wanes after a year. Also, the types of viruses usually change from season to season, so new vaccines are made each year to fight what scientists believe will be the season’s most common strains. You have many flu shot options. Besides the traditional flu vaccines that help protect against three strains of the virus, there are now “quadrivalent” vaccines that help protect against four strains. There’s also a high-dose vaccine approved for people 65 and older. If you have any questions about which is best for you, talk to your doctor or other health care professional. Despite the risk that flu and its complications pose, the vaccination rate remains much lower than it should be. Even during last year’s horrible season, less than half of the U.S. population was vaccinated. Why? Some people don’t
they don’t think a flu shot is worth their time and effort. Others resist annual vaccination because they believe it’s risky, even though decades of experience have shown flu shots to be safe. If you’re concerned about a serious allergic reaction or some other medical condition that may make the flu vaccine unsafe for you, you should consult your doctor before a vaccination. Otherwise, it’s important to remember that you can’t get the flu from the flu shot. Side effects are rare. Most people notice nothing after their vaccination. A few may have a slight fever or some soreness where the shot was given. But those side effects usually last just a day or two. As flu season begins, you’ll want to wash your hands and stay away from sick people to reduce the spread of germs. But as useful as those steps are, an annual vaccination remains the best way to protect yourself and those around you. By avoiding the flu, you’ll avoid giving it to family and friends.

P a p e r wasps are beneficial but can sting We can’t claim paper wasps as a Valley specialty because they’re found throughout the U. S. They’re range, therefore, includes our thorny brush country and most of us have seen them. There are many species we call paper wasps, I’ll focus on Polistes exclamans which is the one you’re most likely to notice. The “yellow-jackets,” of which you’ve probably familiar, are a paper wasp species which builds nests underground and is quite aggressive if disturbed. Those are not the ones we’ll consider now. P. exclamans is a paper wasp usually first noticed when we see it’s nest. It’s like a very thick, gray pancake hanging from a single attachment stem. Frequently the nests hang u n d e r eaves of houses or even just above doorways. The wasps seem quite comfortable around buildings. Looking at the bottom of the nest you’ll see a cluster of hexagonal compartments, a few of which have been capped. The open compartments may contain wasp larvae and the capped ones all contain wasps in the pupal metamorphic stage. The adults, there may be 20 to 30 per nest, construct the nest of wood they’ve chewed into a pulp and mixed with saliva. In each compartment they lay a single egg. When it hatches, they feed it bits of caterpillars, butterflies, beetles and other insects they’ve captured and chewed into a fine mash. The larvae grow and, when large enough, the compartment is sealed and the larvae pupate. When they emerge, they’re adult wasps.

There are three types of wasps at each nest: queens, workers and males. The queens, one or two per nest, lay eggs; the workers (all females) do the construction, gather food and feed the larvae and defend the nest. The males just hang around to mate with queens. Only the worker females can sting because only they have modified ovipositors. Stings can be quite painful and wasps can sting repeatedly. Unless you have an allergic reaction, the stings are briefly painful but not deadly. P. exclamans seem quite tolerant of people and, unless directly disturbed, will ignore you. The paper wasps have dark brownish or blackish wings which are held at their sides when not
in flight. Distinctly, the wings are held at the sides of the body and not crossed one over the other on the back as many wasps do. The heads and bodies are black with bands of yellow. The head of a male is blackish while that of a female is more yellow. Interestingly, while larvae are carnivores, being fed animal matter, adults are herbivores. Adults drink nectar from flowers and the juices of rotting fruit. In what seems like a waste, only a few young, mated queens, hatched in the fall, will survive the

winter. All the old queens, workers and males die. Males, by the way, will grow from unfertilized eggs the next season. Queens develop from fertilized eggs whose larvae receive a selective diet. Paper wasps, while they can sting but seldom do, are considered beneficial by gardeners and agriculturists because they kill lots of destructive insects. We should exercise caution but be pleased when they’re around.

DPS Reminds Texans to Prepare for Winter Weather The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) encourages Texans in all regions of the state to make preparations for staying safe as we approach the official start of winter. “As we know all too well, Texas weather can change in an instant,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “Every year, Texas faces serious dangers
brought on by winter weather conditions, including freezing temperatures, ice, sleet and even snow. Taking extra safety precautions now could make all the difference during these potentially severe weather events this winter.” Texans can prepare their vehicles for the winter by checking the battery, windshield
