My fellow residents of the Great County of Starr, It is with excitement and great expectations that I announce my candidacy for the position of Starr County Clerk. The Starr County Clerk’s Office is an office that plays a very important role in the functioning

of our county. If elected, I pledge to continue to efficiently be the custodian of records for the Starr County Commissioner’s C o u r t , Constitutional County Courts and Statutory County Courts. Under my direction, our county clerk office staff will continue to issue marriage licenses and be an efficient recorder and custodian of important public records, including all bonds, deeds, birth certificates, assumed names and stock brands. As many of our neighboring counties, Starr County is currently experiencing budget difficulties as a result of the dwindling Oil and Gas revenues. It is very important that in financially trying times

that all county offices perform at maximum efficiency or order to maintain the level of services that Starr County tax payers expect. My fellow citizens, I offer you 38 years of business experience as Chief Executive Officer of Grande Garbage Collection Company LLC. Aside from my business experience, I also offer you my experience gained in the 22 years of service to our country as an officer and Supervisor for the United States Department of Homeland Security Department. I have been a resident of our community for the past 57 years. I attended our local public schools and graduated from the Rio Grande City High School in 1969. I attended Texas A&I University in Kingsville, Texas. Also as part of my education and experience, I attended and successfully completed both the U.S Border Patrol and Customs Academies in Brunswick Georgia. Alto Bonito Elementary participated in this year’s Relay For Life Event. They were able to raise over $6,000. It was a tremendous effort by the staff, community, parents, and students! The top 3 grade-levels will be awarded with a little something extra for their participation. 1st place: 3rd Grade, 2nd place: 4th grade, and 3rd place: Kinder. Great Job to all students and staff for going the extra-mile in support to such a great cause! Pictured are this year’s Top Donors from all grade-levels and staff members. Way to go Roadrunners!

Alejandro and Ava Renee. I have always felt very proud to live, work, play and participate in functions that contribute to the continued growth of our great County. Over the past years I have been involved in different clubs and organizations that promote the general welfare of our county residents. For instance: I have served in the Starr- Hidalgo Counties Workforce Solutions, the South Texas Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program, The City of Rio Grande Main Street Program, the Community Action Council of South Texas and the South Texas Development Council Board of Directors. I am currently a member of the Alhambra Club, past president of the Rio Grande City ROTARY Club and a member in good standing of the Knights of Columbus Club. Last but not least, I have also done my share as a coach and umpire of the local little league organization, PTO President and others. From the business side, my company has provided approximately seventy five (75) scholarships to graduating seniors and provided monetary support to little league baseball, girl softball,

youth soccer teams and many others. In short, I strongly believe in giving back to the community and I have done just that. Before closing, I would like to thank Mr. Dennis Gonzalez who served our county well as head of the County Clerk Office for the past 15 years. He also served another 5 years as an employee of the Starr County Planning Department. Dennis is a good man, has always been a good friend and a beloved neighbor. I wish him, his wife Mary Ann and their family success in all future endeavors. In closing, I ask all of my family, friends, neighbors and the many people whom I am acquainted with for your vote and support in this election. If elected, my promise to you is that I will dedicate the very best of me in serving each of you; and I will always do that with respect and dignity. Respectfully, Patricio Hernandez Candidate Starr County Clerk’s Office Political Ad Paid By Candidate

Salmo 23

16th Year Anniversary Mass In Loving Memory of

Sweet Child

God made a Sweet Child, a child who never grew old. He made a smile of sunshine, He molded a heart of pure gold. He made that child as close to an angel as anyone ever could be. God made a Sweet Child and He gave that dear child to me. Then God saw His wonderful creation growing very tired and weak, so He wrapped the child in His loving arms and said, “You my child I keep”. But now my Sweet Child is an angel free from hurt and pain. I’ll love you forever, until we meet again. So many times I have missed you, so many times I have cried, if all my love could have saved you, Sweet Child, you never would have died. author unknown

Take it, Dear Jesus, and place it within your own heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail.

RIO GRANDE CITY CELEBRATES THE REASON FOR THE SEASON DURING 14TH ANNUAL H-E-B FEAST OF SHARING EVENT

Annual Dinner Brings Rio Grande City Community Together on Thursday, December 7 at Fort Ringgold Elementary

The holidays are a special time for H-E-B. It’s a time to give thanks to its customers, and a time to bring family, friends and neighbors together for a beloved annual tradition – the H-E-B Feast of Sharing. This year’s event took place on Thursday, December 7, from 5 -8 p.m., at Fort Ringgold Elementary located at 1 Fort Ringgold St. “Giving back to the community is what H-E-B was founded on more than 115 years ago, and it’s really at the heart of who we are as a company,” said Linda Tovar, H-E-B Director of Public Affairs, Border Region. “The Feast of Sharing gives us a wonderful opportunity to bring the Rio Grande City community together to break bread, enjoy one another’s company, and get the holiday season off to a beautiful start here in South Texas.” During the free community event, hundreds of volunteers served a feast to more than 2,500 residents. The menu included glazed ham with gravy, mashed potatoes, a vegetable medley and dessert. Preparing for a massive, large-scale feast of this size is no easy feat. It takes an army of volunteers to prepare 750 pounds of glazed ham, 35 gallons of gravy, 95 gallons of mashed potatoes, 55 gallons of vegetable medley, 2,500 slices of apple pie and 2,500 rolls. The H-E-B Feast of Sharing dinners were founded in 1989 and are a facet of H-E-B’s Food Bank Assistance Program. The program works year-round to prevent hunger in Texas and Mexico. Today, 31 dinners are held across Texas and in Mexico, with more than 250,000 meals served to communities.

As an incentive Peter Piper Pizza donates a pizza party to the classroom that brings in the most cans. Our winning class this year was Miss Issamar Balderas Pre-Kinder classroom. Congratulations and thank you students for your participation.

General Ricardo Sanchez Elementary held a canned food drive to help several families from our school community. Each family received a canned food basket and a turkey. Special thanks to all students and staff who helped make all the baskets and donated canned goods. We would also like to thank Mr. Jorge Falcon and family for donating the turkeys.

AC2E Elementary Student Council had a successful food canned drive that generated over 1,000 cans in donations from our student body. We are so proud of our students for understanding the gift of giving during the holidays. Different organizations picked up our boxes which will then be donated to families in our community. A big THANK YOU to all of our students and teachers for supporting this event! You all are simply the best!

Roma Little League Election of 2018 Board

Damselflies are distinctive and deserve more attention

on Thursday December 21st, 2017, 6pm, City of Roma Fire Department. Anybody interested in serving as board member, coaching, umpiring, or simply volunteering is encouraged to attend.

A l m o s t e v e r y o n e knows what a dragonfly is but, surprisingly, few know much about damselflies. They’re like small, fragile dragonflies and belong to the same order. Fossils similar to both have been dated to about 300 million years ago. I suspect the name damselfly is derived from the slim, delicate nature of their wings and bodies. By comparison, dragonflies are larger and more robust looking. Damselfly bodies are typically just 1 to 2 inches in length and very thin. When you see one flying, the size and fragile look are good field marks. When they perch on a blade of grass or twig, you’ll notice that damselflies hold their wings together and back over the body. Dragonflies hold their wings out at right angles to the body even when at rest. In the interest of full disclosure, but hopefully not to confuse you, I need to mention that there are a few species of damselflies, called spread-winged, which hold their wings much as dragonflies do. The smaller and more delicate attributes will assist identification

in the unlikely event that you ever see one. The bodies of different species show a wide range of colors. The one we’re most likely to see is bright blue with a few tiny, black spots.

Most damselflies have clear wings with a dark spot (stigma) along the distal (far) leading edge of the forewing. I must caution you, again, that there are a few species called black-winged damselflies which have nearly black wings. There are two pairs of wings which are about equal in size. They’re a little like canoe paddles, but with extremely short handles, that is, each wing is very narrow at the base and then broadens quickly to form the blade of the wing. Unlike dragonflies which can fly straight and do incredible acrobatics in flight, damselflies, while good fliers, flit somewhat like butterflies.

The large eyes are compound and protrude to the sides of the head. The antennae are small and usually not noticed. The mouth parts are sharp incisors used to cut and chew insects which are caught in flight. Some writers claim that as many as 300 mosquitos may be caught in a single day. Thank you damsels! Being an insect, they have three pairs of legs and use the hind, bristled pair to capture insects. In addition to mosquitos and gnats, other small fliers are caught. These predators are also hunted and dragonflies, for example, catch and eat damselflies. Mating takes place in flight and you may occasionally see a pair fly by while linked together. Most insects go through complete metamorphosis but not damselflies. They have only egg, nymph and adult stages. The eggs are laid in water and hatch into nymphs called naiads. They eat tiny pond life, even an occasional tiny fish. Interestingly, a naiad has three, leaflike, external gills on its tail to assist in absorption of oxygen. When fully grown, the naiad crawls out of the water onto a bit of vegetation, splits it’s skin and emerges as an adult. They have only one life cycle per year. These diurnal (day-flying) creatures live but a few weeks to a few months and are normally found in areas near wetlands, streams and ponds. Their appetite for insect pests like mosquitos and gnats is enough to class them as highly beneficial to us but add to that their delicate beauty and it clearly establishes them as insects to be enjoyed and protected. Get up off the couch and take a hike in the wild; wonders are there to be seen.
