On Thursday, November 18, 2021, Texas Starr Rural Network celebrated their first official event “Creative Minds”. The event included an Art Lesson, where all children painted their own masterpiece. As children were engaged they enjoyed creating a Mickey Mouse Christmas theme canvas painting. The children got to interact with each other while learning about abstract painting. Ms. Mayra Hinojosa was the instructor for this event. Texas Starr Rural Network goal is to help children learn to love and inspire themselves through monthly activities that are geared to capture disabled children, school aged children and teenagers. They want to create an inclusive environment where all children including those with special needs feel equally important. Teenagers will benefit from the program through teen building activities as well. It was amazing to see the number of children that joined them for their first official event. These events will take place on a monthly basis at 1404 N. Grant St., Suite A-2 in Roma, Texas. Texas Starr Rural Network highly encourage all children to join them at these FREE events. Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it, Dear Jesus, and place it within your own heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail.

3 Red Flags: How Technology & Roma High JROTC Program Cadets Excel, Social Media Can Fuel Anxiety in Us Host First Raider Event Since Pandemic Began Dr. Colleen Cira, Psy.D., is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who specializes in Women and Trauma, and has worked with hundreds of people struggling with mental health issues. Talking Points From Dr. Colleen Cira on Technology & Social Media’s Negative Impact: We live in a scary world and the 24/7 access to all of the scariness due to the technology era and social media is too much for anyone to handle. Most of us struggle to watch or read about real-life atrocities and may have some mild anxiety symptoms as a result. We may avoid the content entirely, experience intrusive and/ or ruminating thoughts about the disaster, feel inclined to research it more, or talk about it excessively. When we witness or read about something incredibly disturbing, these are all commonplace and should fade in a matter of days. How do we know when there’s an issue? Here are 3 red flags to consider: 1. Anxiety Doesn’t Fade Quickly. If the anxiety about the disaster doesn’t fade in a couple of days OR the symptoms are really intense (the symptoms make it difficult to function), that’s a
different thing. It’s a good general rule of thumb that whenever your reaction is way bigger or way more intense than the situation itself, there’s something else going on. Now, of course, a mass shooting or disaster of any kind is going to be incredibly disturbing for those involved or directly affected. And any compassionate human being is going to feel some level of disturbance when hearing about something as awful as this. However, if you are NOT directly affected by the tragedy and it’s still interfering with your ability to function in your life, it’s fair to assume that it’s not JUST the tragedy you are reacting to. 2. The Story Triggers Intense Emotions or Symptoms. Perhaps the tragedy reminds you of your own tragedy or engenders feelings of horror and helplessness which remind you of a terrible time in your own life. Regardless, if the symptoms are really intense and/or last more than a couple of weeks, it’s time to get some professional help. 3. Experiencing Upset Feelings on a Regular Basis. Whether or not your symptoms are intense or mild, last a day or two or a couple of weeks, if you are feeling upset
on a regular basis by all of the scary things happening in the world, it’s probably helpful to explore your boundaries about keeping up with current events. It’s one thing to have an idea of what’s going on in the world—it’s an entirely different thing to ingest current events constantly throughout your day. THE IMPORTANCE OF SETTING HEALTHY BOUNDARIES It’s Okay to set some limits about when, where, and how often you will read or listen to the news. It’s okay to give yourself permission to not read click-bait stories on Facebook. It’s Okay to tell a friend you’re just not up for talking about whatever the recent tragedy is. And it’s more than okay, it’s healthy and necessary to set some boundaries. Dr. Colleen Cira received both her Master’s and Doctorate from The Illinois School of Professional Psychology and is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in the State of Illinois. Dr. Cira is a trauma and anxiety expert, clinical supervisor, writer, speaker, consultant, activist, wife, and Mommy to two little ones.
By: Roma High School JROTC Program Staff Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) Cadets from Roma High School hosted and excelled in their own La Copa Gladiator Raider Challenge held at La Copa Ranch, Encino TX. More than 18 schools from the RGV competed, including Laredo, Kingsville and San Antonio, making it the most challenging Meet for the Cadets. This year, the Raider Challenge Meet was on October 23, 2021. Consisting of seven events, it started with a 1K Run, Obstacle Course, Ruck Run, Commando Bridge, Raider Assault Course, Jeep Pull and a 1K sprint to the finish line. All the events were continuous and the teams are timed as soon as they start and time stops when the team crosses the finish line. More a Spartan type race than the old fashion Raider Challenge, this event is more streamlined to take precautions against COVID requiring minimal interaction between teams. “We adjusted the event from the Spring Meet and added the Raider Assault Course that included a
100lbs Litter carry, carry of 4-five gallon jugs of water, and a fireman carry. This addition would ensure all physically fit teams would separate from the weaker teams,” said Lt. Colonel Luis C. Barrera, Roma High School SAI. “Of all of the extracurricular activities in JROTC, Raiders are the most physical,” Barrera added. “The Raiders allows student/cadets the opportunity to work together as a team to negotiate various obstacles under the demands of running, jumping, climbing, and decision making, which is critical to completing each task in the fastest time possible.” While the program was put on hold because of COVID-19, this proved to be an opportunity for the cadets to become even stronger. “Due to COVID-19, our student/ cadets, as well as our instructors,

had to get to know each other again,” said Barrera. “To be able to reset and start over again was something that everyone had to do, and it was great to see the results of their commitment to work harder with the challenges of COVID.” Assisting the Roma High School JROTC in running the meet were former cadets and family members. Without their assistance it would have been a challenge to execute the event. The Roma High COED team placed fourth in the event and San Antonio East Central took first place. These type of events are an opportunity to practice the discipline that is part of the program and overcome the challenges brought on by the pandemic.
Weatherproof to Stay Warm
Weatherproofing is an inexpensive way to save money on energy bills during the winter. Even the tiniest cracks around windows, doors, light fixtures, electrical outlets and air ducts can let your home’s comfy heated air escape to the outdoors. That can add up to substantial heat loss. Here’s how to avoid leaks by weatherproofing your house: •Caulk throughout the house wherever walls meet floors or door frames and between the outside of the window frame and the siding. Choose caulk designed for the surface you’re caulking, and use a high-quality caulk, which will last longer. •Apply weatherstripping to all exterior doors and windows. Weatherstripping is a thin piece of material that seals the gap between where the door or window meets the jamb. Selfsticking foam pieces are quick and easy to apply. •Replace worn door sweeps on exterior doors to help prevent heat loss under the door. •Seal windows with thin plastic sheets using an insulator kit. Shrinking the plastic film with a hair dryer ensures a smooth and tight seal. Medina Electric’s members can use SmartHub, a free app/ website, to see their daily energy use along with weather data. This may help you spot issues and determine where you can save even more energy and money. Learn more at MedinaEC.org/ SH. For more information on ways to save this winter, go to MedinaEC.org/Cold.
