Starr County Remains in Zaffirini’s Senate District 21 After Redistricting
Head Coach Eduardo Marquez Receives Tennis Award
Roma High Lady Gladiators Volleyball Players Earn All-District Honors
The redistricting process—the once-per-decade redrawing of Congressional, Texas Senate, Texas House and State Board of Education maps—will keep Starr County in Senate District 21, represented by Senator Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo. “Starr County belongs to a historic community of interest that has been preserved for more than a century,” Senator Zaffirini said. “I am delighted it will remain in our district and look forward to continuing to champion bipartisan legislation that addresses the needs of families throughout the state.” Starr County shares many cultural, ideological and geographic features with other counties in SD 21. Uniting these communities of interest empowers residents to elect the candidates of their choice and increases their influence in the Legislature.
Congratulations to Roma ISD Tennis Program Head Coach Eduardo Marquez for receiving his 20 years service award from the Texas Tennis Coaches Association!
Congratulations to the Roma High School Mighty Lady Gladiator Student Athletes on their All-District Selections! The Gladiator Nation is very proud of you!!
“Although my constituents are separated by many miles, we are connected by our shared priorities,” Senator Zaffirini said. “They include ensuring our families healthy and safe, fostering economic growth and providing our children with an excellent education.” Senator Zaffirini prioritizes education in general, with a focus on early childhood and higher education; and health and human services in general, with a focus on the very young, the very old, the very poor, persons with disabilities and veterans. On Nov. 13 she filed for reelection in the newly redistricted SD 21, which will be home to 930,000 Texans and span 16 counties stretching from the Rio Grande to the Colorado River. Senator Zaffirini is the first Hispanic woman elected to the
Texas Senate, the second highestranking senator and the highestranking woman and Hispanic senator. During the last regular legislative session she passed 106 bills through the Republicandominated Legislature, proving her bipartisan effectiveness and making her the highest bill-passer for the fourth consecutive session. What’s more, she has passed more bills than any other legislator in Texas history. Her legendary work ethic is reflected in her 100 percent voting record, having cast 67,923 consecutive votes, and in her perfect attendance in the Texas Senate since 1987, except for breaking quorum deliberately to prevent an untimely re-redistricting that the U.S. Supreme Court (2006) ruled violated the Voting Rights Act and disenfranchised voters.
Senator Judith Zaffirini embraces two of her favorite blessings. What she works for and hopes for Asher and George is what she works for and hopes for all children. May you and yours enjoy a blessed Christmas.

Keep Holidays Merry: Get a Flu Shot Now Defend against influenza, physicians urge Seasonal flu, a frequent fall and winter visitor, didn’t make much of an appearance last year with people isolating and defending themselves from germs by wearing masks and maintaining social distance. Texas physicians say we may not be so lucky this year and, with upcoming holiday gatherings, urge everyone to get their annual influenza, or flu, shot. “We’re starting to see an increase in flu cases,” said Donald Murphey, MD, an Austin pediatric infectious disease specialist and chair of the Texas Medical Association (TMA) Council on Science and Public Health. “Your best protection against catching and spreading the flu is a vaccination.” Flu vaccination is recommended each year for everyone 6 months of age and older, including pregnant women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The flu vaccination can defend people from getting flu, reduce the severity of illness, and keep individuals from ending up in the hospital, just as the COVID-19 vaccines lessen COVID-19 illness severity for most people. “Nobody wants to spend their holiday season in the hospital battling flu or pneumonia,” Dr. Murphey said. In pregnant women, the flu shot helps pass on some protection to the baby until he or she can be vaccinated. Flu complications are most
dangerous for the youngest and the oldest, and for people with chronic medical problems like asthma or any condition that weakens their body, like cancer. Most flu-related hospitalizations and nearly all (up to 85%) of flurelated deaths occur in people over age 65. “Your sneeze or cough could be enough to make someone really sick whose body isn’t able to fight off the infection – from your new niece or nephew to your grandparent,” Dr. Murphey said. “Making sure you’ve had your flu shot protects you and others you’ll be around.” People who have had a COVID-19 vaccination still need an annual flu vaccination. The two illnesses, while both respiratory, are caused by different viruses, or germs. COVID-19 is caused by the coronavirus, and flu is caused by influenza viruses, which change. A variety of flu vaccinations is available. Physicians recommend everyone check with his or her doctor to choose the best option. For those who haven’t yet had a COVID-19 vaccination, physicians say getting it at the same time as a flu vaccination is fine. TMA’s Vaccines Defend What Matters initiative provides education about vaccines and how they defend people and our way of life from the effects of diseases. The program’s goals are to overcome vaccine hesitancy and increase vaccination rates in Texas.

Christmas and New Year’s drivers urged to move over or slow down for tow trucks and other emergency vehicles As they travel Texas roadways during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, motorists are urged to slow down or move over for stopped emergency vehicles including tow trucks, police cars and fire trucks. Texas law requires drivers to slow down at least 20 miles per hour under the posted speed limit or, if able, to change lanes when they’re passing a first responder stopped on the road. Large numbers of travelers are expected on Texas roads, which means that more breakdowns and traffic stops are likely as well. Drivers should pay attention to what’s happening around them and prepare to react quickly. “Our tow truck licensees work hard every day to help people who are stranded on the side of the road. And, like everyone else, they are anxious to return home safely each night,” said Brian E. Francis, executive director for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). “Please slow down or move over when you see emergency vehicles stopped on the side of the road. It’s the safe thing to do and it’s the law. Let’s make the holiday memorable for positive reasons and not because someone was killed or injured.” TDLR regulates tow trucks as well as driver education and driving safety courses.
You’re in good hands.
