Roma High School JROTC Conducts Service Learning Project at City of Roma Cemetery

By: Roma High School JROTC Program Director Lt. Col. Luis Barrera For their Service Learning Project for the 2021-2022 school year, students in the Army JROTC Program at Roma High School are launching a plan to memorialize departed and living local Veterans. The mission for the project is to collect data on all local veterans. The first phase of the project has the cadets collecting information on deceased veterans from local cemeteries prior to Memorial Day 2022. The cadets began with the City of Roma Cemetery on Nov. 13, 2021, with over 20 cadets reporting for duty. Each Cadet was tasked to search and log in all deceased veterans according to the plot numbers assigned to them and take photos of their head stones. The cadets collected information for more than 70 veterans, including veterans from the Civil War, World War 1, World War 2, the Korean War and other nonwar veterans. Among these, cadets found three Confederate Veterans in the old cemetery, which was an eye opener for some of the cadets who did not know that South Texas supported the southern cause of the Civil War. The service learning event will continue with other phases including building a website to highlight local living and deceased veterans, which will show their photos and information. The site will be updated annually with the

assistance of the VFW Post 9175. The students also plan to place a wreath on all veteran’s graves during Memorial Day, and replace torn flags during Veterans day. In order to fulfill their service learning project, the cadets are planning fundraising initiatives to fund the flags and wreaths. “We hope that with the support of our community, we will have enough wreaths for all veteran’s graves on memorial day. The wreaths cost $15 each through the Wreaths Across America Organization,” said Lt. Col. Luis Barrera, Roma High School JROTC Program director.

“Please look for information soon on the fundraising activities, or feel free to contact us directly to donate in support of this worthy cause.” In addition to requests for assistance with fundraising, the Roma High JROTC Program cadets ask for community assistance with collecting photos of deceased and living veterans from the Roma and Starr County area. To provide photos or for additional information on the school’s JROTC Program projects, please contact Lt. Col. Luis C. Barrera at 956-849-1333 or at lbarrera1@ romaisd.com.

Emma Vera Elementary School would like to congratulate Evan Vazquez-Kanhere for becoming the school’s first “Super Reader”! Evan has read over a million words and counting. Awesome job Evan!!

Rare golden-cheeked warbler seen Now that the temperatures have dropped a little, I hope you are spending some time outside. I’m doing more bird watching and got a big and welcome surprise: my birdbath was visited by a golden-cheeked warbler. Just another bird you might think, but no, it’s a remarkable sighting. The golden-cheeked warbler is the only bird that nests exclusively in Texas and it’s also on the endangered species list. In over 20 years here, this is the first one I’ve seen. If you’re fortunate enough to see one, it’s easy to identify a male. They, of course, have bright gold colored cheeks but with a

black eye line. Most of the upper parts are also black except for two white wing bars and some white tail feathers. The breast and belly are white except for black on the chin and outer sides of the upper breast and some black streaking on the sides. T h e females are similar except that the crown, nape of neck and back tend to be greenish-brown and speckled. Their nesting area is a strip of juniper-oak woodlands in the center of Texas. They nest and breed there in March to June after which they migrate south for the winter to Mexico and upper Central America. The Ashe juniper trees in their breeding habitat are critical because the females, who build the nests, will not do so unless they have strips of juniper bark to use in the beginning of the nest. Later they add spider webbing, rootlets, fine grasses and perhaps some animal

hairs. Unfortunately, the junipers are being logged and housing development is clearing the juniper-oak woodlands. Habitat destruction, loss of Ashe junipers, is the warbler’s major problem and their population is declining. Some organizations are making an effort to save and restore the juniper-oak woodlands but it’s not easy. Facts of interest include the following. The golden-cheeked diet consists of insects, spiders and caterpillars. The males call is described as a buzzing sound: Bzz Bzz Lay-Dee-Day-Zee with emphasis on the last high Zee. Banding studies have shown that some of the golden-cheeked warblers return to the same spot to breed each year and may even have the same mate. One tagged warbler is known to have lived over ten years. I hope we don’t lose this interesting bird. Get outside and be observant, you never know what you might see.

CDC Updates and Shortens Recommended Isolation and Quarantine Period for General Population

Given what we currently know about COVID-19 and the Omicron variant, CDC is shortening the recommended time for isolation from 10 days for people with COVID-19 to 5 days, if asymptomatic, followed by 5 days of wearing a mask when around others. The change is motivated by science demonstrating that the majority of SARS-CoV-2 transmission occurs early in the course of illness, generally in the 1-2 days prior to onset of symptoms and the 2-3 days after. Therefore, people who test positive should isolate for 5 days and, if asymptomatic at that time, they may leave isolation if they can continue to mask for 5 days to minimize the risk of infecting others. Additionally, CDC is updating the recommended quarantine period for those exposed to COVID-19. For people who are unvaccinated or are more than six months out from their second mRNA dose (or more than 2 months after the J&J vaccine) and not yet boosted, CDC now recommends quarantine for 5 days followed by strict mask use for an additional 5 days. Alternatively, if a 5-day quarantine is not feasible, it

is imperative that an exposed person wear a well-fitting mask at all times when around others for 10 days after exposure. Individuals who have received their booster shot do not need to quarantine following an exposure, but should wear a mask for 10 days after the exposure. For all those exposed, best practice would also include a test for SARSCoV-2 at day 5 after exposure. If symptoms occur, individuals should immediately quarantine until a negative test confirms symptoms are not attributable to COVID-19. Isolation relates to behavior after a confirmed infection. Isolation for 5 days followed by wearing a well-fitting mask will minimize the risk of spreading the virus to others. Quarantine refers to the time following exposure to the virus or close contact with someone known to have COVID-19. Both updates come as the Omicron variant continues to spread throughout the U.S. and reflects the current science on when and for how long a person is maximally infectious. Data from South Africa and the United Kingdom demonstrate that vaccine effectiveness against infection for two doses of an mRNA

vaccine is approximately 35%. A COVID-19 vaccine booster dose restores vaccine effectiveness against infection to 75%. COVID-19 vaccination decreases the risk of severe disease, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19. CDC strongly encourages COVID-19 vaccination for everyone 5 and older and boosters for everyone 16 and older. Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and reduce the impact of COVID-19 on our communities. The following is attributable to CDC Director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky: “The Omicron variant is spreading quickly and has the potential to impact all facets of our society. CDC’s updated recommendations for isolation and quarantine balance what we know about the spread of the virus and the protection provided by vaccination and booster doses. These updates ensure people can safely continue their daily lives. Prevention is our best option: get vaccinated, get boosted, wear a mask in public indoor settings in areas of substantial and high community transmission, and take a test before you gather.”

2022 Fort Ringgold Commander Samuel “Sam” Ramos

During the Rio Grande City Grulla ISD’s Veteran Day’s program, Rio native and Vietnam war veteran Sam Ramos was recognized by Revive Fort Ringgold organization for his countless years of support to the community and Fort Ringgold. During the ceremony Sam was promoted to the honorary rank of “Colonel”. In the US Army Colonels normally oversee military installations (Forts). With this rank of honorary colonel, Sam was recognized and appointed as the 2022 Fort Ringgold post commander. This designation is given annually to local veteran who volunteers in the local community and shows support to Fort Ringgold. Sam was presented a brown cavalry hat with the ”eagle” the rank of the colonel. Other post commanders have been: 2018 - Arturo Garza US Army WWII 2019 - Alberto Barrera US Army Korean War 2020 - Ruben Saenz

US Air Force Vietnam Era 2022 - Sam Ramos US Army Vietnam War Sam Ramos – A true patriot and son of Fort Ringgold A true and proud son of Fort Ringgold, Samuel Ramos was born at the Post Hospital in 1940 while his father, Sgt. Salvador Ramos was playing a troop baseball game in was the Little League Field or today’s soft ball field. The next year,

the troops went to Fort Bliss and the Ramos family followed. Soon after Pearl Harbor arrack, his mother, Sam and his baby brother left to Houston to live, while Sgt. Ramos deployed to California, and later to the Pacific theatre. After the war, the family moved back to Rio Grande. Sam spent his Junior High and High School years at Fort Ringgold. He went to classes, practiced band, baseball, football, track and most of this social time was in Fort Ringgold. During those years the fort was the educational and social center for Rio Grande City and La Grulla. Upon graduating from high school, he attended Pan American College for one year and volunteered in the Army. As an American soldier, he trained in many forts in many states. He was also deployed in a few conflicts including Vietnam during 1963-64. Upon

returning, Sam became involved with the youth of the town. He was a Boy Scout Master and a Little League coach. His involvement in Little included officer, coach, umpire. This involvement led to start the Pony league, girls little league and T-Ball. There were days in June in 100 degrees that he would referee 3 games and 5 to 6 days a week. There was not much time in the day besides working at Central Power and Light and the games. One day in 1992, after more than 30 years of some form of baseball games at Fort Ringgold, he decided to resign. He started to play tennis with his friends, again in Fort Ringgold for more than 20 years. There was a also a time that during the noon hour he would run the cross-country route with coaches Earhart, Mancha, Toro. He also refereed in junior and high Football games with James, Kenny, Arturo and Marshall for many years. As a community volunteer, he spoke to many students on Veterans and Memorial Day, the history of Rio Grande City, the importance of an education, planning a economical budget. As a municipal judge, he spoke in every 9th grade student about laws that affected them like curfews, tobacco and liquor laws. He has led countless tours of elementary students, teachers, out of towners to Fort Ringgold, always proud of the history. So Sam has spent more time at Fort Ringgold than most people and doing it as a Volunteer.
