Prediabetes Symptoms
What are the symptoms? Some people never have noticeable symptoms. Others develop Type 2 diabetes very slowly. They may not notice the symptoms right away. The most common symptoms are: Frequent urination, Excessive thirst, Excessive hunger, Blurred vision, Numbness or tingling of the hands or feet, Fatigue, Dry skin, Sores that heal slowly, Frequent infections of the skin, urinary tract or vagina. What causes Type 2 diabetes? Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. It is caused by several things, including lifestyle factors and genetics. Being overweight and physically inactive You are more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes if you are not physically active and
are overweight or obese. Extra weight sometimes causes insulin resistance and is common in people with Type 2 diabetes. The location of body fat also makes a difference. Extra belly fat is linked to insulin resistance, Type 2 diabetes and heart and blood vessel disease. Insulin resistance Type 2 diabetes usually begins with insulin resistance. This is a condition in which muscle, liver and fat cells do not use insulin well. As a result, your body needs more insulin to help glucose enter your cells. The pancreas makes more insulin at first. Then as time passes, the pancreas can’t make enough and blood glucose levels increase. Family history According to the National Institutes of Health, Type 2 diabetes does not have a clear
pattern of inheritance. However, many affected individuals have at least one close family member with the disease. The risk of developing Type 2 diabetes increases with the number of affected family members. The increased risk is likely due, in part, to shared genetic factors. It is also related to a person’s lifestyle (such as eating and exercise habits) that is shared by family members. Family history also can increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes. One factor can be a person’s tendency to become overweight or obese. How is Type 2 diabetes treated? You may be able to manage Type 2 diabetes through healthy eating and physical activity. Your doctor may prescribe medication such as insulin or other injectable or oral medications.
Black-necked stilts are amazing birds! A few years ago, while at the r i v e r- v i e w i n g platform near the Roma City Hall to watch for waterfowl, I saw 29 species including an indigo bunting, a pair of black phoebes, a flock of white-faced ibises and, my favorite, a pair of black-necked stilts. The black-necked stilt is a truly amazing sight. It’s a shore bird and, in this area, can’t easily be mistaken for anything else. From beak to tail it’s about 14 inches long and it has about 10 inch legs. In the proportion of its leg length to its body size, those are the relatively longest legs of all birds. To make the legs even more incredible, they’re bright pinkish-red. The body is black above, which is sharply contrasted with clean white beneath. This bird is a wonder to behold in both color and shape. The bill is long, thin, pointed and black. Each eye is crimson with a white eye ring. The wing tips, when the wings are folded, reach to the tip of the tail. The feet are partially webbed.
Despite the long legs, the stilts walk steadily and confidently. When picking up food it typically bends at the knees and then uses its long beak to reach the food. Its usual habitat is sandbars along a river, marshes, and pond edges. While it can swim, it typically wades in the shallows, sometimes up to its belly, or walks about examining mud flats and marshes. It’s food consists of aquatic insects, mosquito larvae, crayfish, tiny fish, snails, flies, beetles, grasshoppers, and occasional plant seeds. The stilt’s nest is just a shallow depression on the ground, often near some clumps of grass, and is lined with leaves of grass, tiny twigs, broken bits of shell, and a few feathers. T h e eggs, 4 to 5 in number, are buff colored and splashed with blotches of dark brown. Typically the male incubates the eggs during the
day and the female at night. The hatchlings are precocial which means that they are, with some parental guidance, able to find food for themselves almost immediately. As many as a hundred times a day, the parents may leave the nest briefly to moisten their feathers. The cooling from evaporation protects them and the eggs from the heat of the day. Black-necked stilts have a rather large range. They can be found here in the Valley all year and are common in the western states, east of the Rocky Mountains, during the summer. They’re also found to the south of us in winter. They have a few other common names: lawyer, longshanks, and daddy longlegs. The lawyer name may come from the fact that it is a noisy bird making a “kleepkleep-kleep” or “kek-kek-kek” sound almost incessantly. Or it may result from the neat almost tuxedo look of its colors as well as the elegant, almost courtly grace with which it moves, I’m delighted to have the blacknecked stilts in our area. While they’re beneficial and amazing to see, they’re also a reminder of how limited our imaginations are and of how innovative and creative nature can be.

TxDOT Calling On Texans To Keep Roadside Workers Safe Drivers are required by law to ‘Move Over / Slow Down’ near roadside workers TxDOT’s “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” safety initiative is urging motorists to follow the state’s Move Over/Slow Down law. This law requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching law enforcement, tow trucks, utility vehicles, emergency responders and TxDOT vehicles stopped with activated overhead lights on the side of the road. Drivers who fail to give emergency and work crews space to safely do their jobs face fines up to $2000. Unfortunately, police officers, tow truck drivers and other roadside workers are hit, injured or killed on the side of the road every year. TxDOT is calling on all drivers to respect these
workers who are vital to keeping our roads clear and safe. The Move Over/Slow Down law requires drivers to: •Take safety precautions when they approach roadside law enforcement, emergency vehicles, tow trucks, utility vehicles and TxDOT vehicles with flashing lights on. •When possible, move out of the lane closest to these vehicles. •Slow down to 20 mph below the posted speed limit if safely switching lanes is not possible or the road doesn’t offer multiple lanes. •Reduce speed to 5 mph on roadways with posted speed limits of 25 mph or less. The state’s Move Over/Slow Down law was first passed in 2003 and applied to police, fire and emergency medical service
vehicles. The Texas Legislature has since extended the law’s protections to TxDOT vehicles, tow trucks and utility service vehicles. “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” is a key component of #EndTheStreakTX, a broader social media and word-ofmouth effort that encourages drivers to make safer choices while behind the wheel such as wearing a seat belt, driving the speed limit, never texting and driving and never driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. Nov. 7, 2000 was the last deathless day on Texas roadways. #EndTheStreakTX asks all Texans to commit to driving safely to help end the streak of daily deaths on Texas roadways.
