Rio Grande City Grulla ISD hosted the FIRST EVER Christmas Tree Lighting on Friday, December 3, 2021, at the Fort Ringgold Parade Field. It was an extremely successful event featuring RGCGISD student performances, with the School Board of Trustees as well as our city and county queens, and vendors set up in our pavilion. There truly was something for everyone! When it was time for the lights to be switched on, the crowd was awe inspired at the sight. We can only take this as a sign of success and a sign of what is yet to come at our Winter Festival of Lights happening on Friday, December 10, 2021, and Saturday, December 11, 2021. On behalf of Adolfo Peña Jr., and the entire Board of Trustees, we are extremely proud of everyone’s efforts to make this event so successful. At RGCGISD, we offer experiences of a lifetime!

How to Talk to Your Kids About Emotions Nadine Levitt is an education advocate, speaker, and the CEO & Founder of WURRLYedu, an educational technology platform. Nadine specializes in the socialemotional curriculum (SEL), and she is also the author of the children’s book, My Mama Says Inside Me Lives a Village. What Nadine Levitt can say about Kids & Emotions: •It is crucial, in the wake of the pandemic, that we shift the dialog about emotions. More kids are feeling these big feelings like anxiety, stress, depression, feelings of isolation, and they are often not well equipped to process those emotions! •But emotions do not need to be scary – they are after all just messengers. They are trying to help us by delivering a message (using alarms and rewards), and once they have delivered their message they will have served their purpose so will quiet down. •Emotions are foundational. If our kids don’t understand their emotions and don’t learn to process them in a healthy way, not only will it likely result in mental health issues down the

road, but it will pose problems in every facet of your child’s life, from relationships to health to academic performance! Some helpful tips for all parents as they talk to their kids about emotions: •Differentiate between the emotion and the thoughts and actions – try to avoid language like “good” or “bad.” •When your child says they are feeling something (frustrated for example) ask them what else they are feeling – encourage them to look past the loudest emotion. •Model a healthy management system for your kids. Create rituals to set you up for success! Nadine Levitt is a Swiss-born, German, Kiwi, American thought leader, speaker, and author who is passionate about education, especially focusing on child emotional wellness, social and emotional skill development using the Arts, and EdTech. In 2015 she founded the technology company WURRLY, which also makes WURRLYedu—a leading music education solution being used in schools across 22 states. Nadine

has authored two children´s books for social and emotional learning (Inside Me Lives a Village and Inside Me Lives a Superhero), initially developed as a tool to use with her own kids, to help them develop positive self-awareness, self-regulation skills, confidence, empathy, creativity, and self-expression. This quickly grew into a school program, with the development of a supporting curriculum and classroom resources, and toys and other children’s products that foster a healthy relationship with emotions. As an education thought leader, Nadine Levitt gives keynote speeches around the world on the subjects of music education, social and emotional learning, and technology in classrooms.

South Texas College and Trancasa set to roll out new CDL Program

South Texas College, in partnership with international ground transportation leader Trancasa, has set in motion a new commercial driver’s license program that will address a growing demand for drivers in the industry. “This is a classic example of South Texas College reskilling and upskilling through education and training to meet regional and local labor demands,” said South Texas College president Dr. Ricardo J. Solis who brokered the partnership with Trancasa. Trancasa CEO Carlos A. Canales Melhem, Texas Workforce Labor Commissioner Julian Alvarez, and Workforce Solutions Hidalgo County CEO Frank Almaraz joined the STC president Wednesday at a press conference announcing the new CDL program. “We know that there is a great demand for truck drivers,” said Continuing Education Executive Director Olivia De La Rosa. “As a result, we have sped up our timeline to address this demand in our community by starting our first class by next month (January) and creating a five-week program where they will train and then test so they can find a job quickly.” The first class is scheduled for Jan. 10, 2022, and the curriculum will meet the new Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) regulations set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). STC is currently in the process of becoming an approved training provider by FMCSA, which by law has to be approved before Feb. 7, 2022, which is the date new regulations go into effect. The new CDL program is set to begin with two full-time instructors and two trucks leased by Trancasa. The course will consist of 200 total hours of instruction delivered over five weeks; 40 hours of classroom and computer lab instruction, as well as 160 hours of observation and driving on a training range and public roads. “Now, in partnership with STC, we are moving the world with a school devoted to the biggest and most in-demand transportation career - that of the CDL professional driver,” said Carlos Canales, CEO for Trancasa. “STC’s educational expertise and our more than 30 years of international transportation expertise are combining to create a CDL school that will build the drivers of the present and the future. Together, Trancasa and STC are dedicated to delivering success to you.” Said Executive

Director Ilse Vidaurri Trancasa operates a fleet of 700 Trucks, 450 in Mexico and 250 in the United States. Each truck is equipped with anti-collision technology and cameras to facilitate training, 24/7 security, and maintenance support. A growing and diversified customer base on both sides of the border is supported by the company’s 1,250 employees. Working with Trancasa, STC was able to develop a trucking program created entirely by the college. Previously, STC had relied on a private vendor, which conducted the courses and trained students. That contract expired in 2019, according to De La Rosa. In its place is a program that will benefit from STC instruction and equipment, De La Rosa said. “Since then, we’ve been exploring different options and instead of looking for somebody else to provide the training, we decided it was time for us to develop our own, which means that it will be our instruction, our instructors and our equipment,” De La Rosa said. “That’s what we have been working on, and it has been a process. But now, especially because of the partnership with Trancasa, we were able to get trucks quickly and we were able to move up that timeline quite a bit.” Trucking is a $791.7 billion industry that hauls 72.5 percent of all freight transported in the United States and employs about 6 percent of all full-time workers. An aging workforce however, combined with recent surges in labor shortages, has created a vacuum of around 80,000 truck drivers. STC President Solis says the college recognizes how vital the industry is for the economy, and explained how expediting the training of drivers was included in the new CDL course by design. “We know there is an urgent need for truck drivers, and we are planning a very robust program where students will be able to obtain their CDL driver’s license and get them on the road as soon as possible. We are hoping to expand it to our campus in Weslaco and then Starr County,” Solis said. “I refer back on my background in international trade and commerce to be able to bring all of my experience in those fields together to work here for the Valley, and to make STC a true center for workforce and economic development.” For more information about the CDL course, please visit southtexascollege.edu/cdl.

Roma ISD Schools Earn Four Top Spots in State, Five Top Regional Spots in New Children at Risk School Guide For more than a decade, Children at Risk has ranked and graded Texas public schools to help parents, educators, and community members understand how schools in their community are performing, and to spark dialogue on the quality of public education across Texas. This year’s analysis is different from previous years to better address the impact of the pandemic on schools as well as data concerns such as 2019-2020 STAAR data unavailability due to Covid-19 and participation rates and methods for 2020-21 STAAR data. Therefore, this analysis focuses on changes in academic performance during the pandemic with a special focus on school resiliency. Roma ISD is happy to report that five of our schools are highlighted in the new Children at Risk Report! The list honors schools that have maintained or improved academic performance between the 2018-19 and 202021 Academic years. Pandemic Resilient Schools are school campuses with 75% or more students classified as economically disadvantaged and also have a history of high performance (A or B, or C Rating in 2018-19). These schools experienced either an increase or no change in academic performance scores during the Pandemic. Roma ISD has three schools on the list of the “Most Resilient Texas Elementary Schools”. R. T. Barrera Elementary School Ranks 2nd in the state and the Rio Grande Valley; Veterans Memorial Elementary School

ranks 4th in the state and the Rio Grande Valley; and Delia G. Garcia Elementary ranks 8th in the state and 7th in the Rio Grande Valley. Also, R. & C. Saenz Elementary Schools made the list, ranking 8th in the Rio Grande Valley. In terms of middle schools, Roma ISD’s Roma Middle School ranks 2nd on the list of the “Most Resilient Texas Middle Schools” and ranks 2nd in the Rio Grande Valley. “I am amazed and proud of the hard work our faculty and staff at Roma ISD put into helping our students continue to thrive during the pandemic, and these rankings show that we are success-focused at Roma ISD despite what obstacles may lie in our way,” expressed Roma ISD Superintendent Carlos Guzman. “I want to thank all the teachers and staff for everything they have given of themselves to keep our students on track, determined to attain excellence in all they do. I want to thank our students for their determination and hard work; they are exceeding

expectations and showing their full potential. I also want to thank our dedicated parents for their support of our mission and vision at Roma ISD – nothing is possible without you.” For more information about the Children at Risk ratings visit https://childrenatrisk.org/ resilient-schools-21/ to see all the top schools in the state and by region.
