The Rio Grande City Rattler Basketball team defeated the Roma Gladiators, after the final buzzer sounded, Rio Grande City prevailed with a 64-43 victory! Juan Gutierrez would score 10 for Roma, but the Rattlers stood strong behind Aaron Marroquin and Jaime Covarrubias’ 18 points apiece. This marks the second time the Rattlers have prevailed over the Gladiators this season. And the Rattlers continued being the kings of the court defeating Sharyland Pioneer 68-67! It was truly a fight to the finish. Congratulations and good luck to the teams as they continue their seasons!

Roma ISD Students Show Prize Lambs Roma High Athletes Excel At Competition
By: Joey Ramon, Roma High School Agriculture Science Teacher The Palm Valley District FFA Livestock Show on January 22, 2019, was a great success for Roma’s FFA. For the second year in a row, Roma FFA had a member receive Overall Grand Champion Lamb. The students earned trophy buckles and embroidered carryon bags as prizes. Rebecca Canales became the fourth student to earn a trophy buckle under the lamb program. Mario Canales, Kaylon Ramon and Bryan Izaguirre have won multiple trophy buckles over the last three years and Rebecca Canales won a buckle at the show. Between the students mentioned, they have won between 17-18 trophy buckles and between 1112 champion banners under the lamb program. Jason Izaguirre is a 4th grader and this is Jason’s first year showing and his second show
ever. No doubt he will be a prize earner very soon. These students have had their lamb projects since June 2018 and in the show ring, it was easily noticeable that the Roma students have spent time with their animals as they handled their lambs with ease which enabled them to rise to the top of the show. Congratulations to the following students:
Rebecca Canales – Overall Grand Champion Lamb – Roma High School; Mario Canales – Overall Reserve Champion Lamb – F.J. Scott Elementary School; Kaylon Ramon – Breed Champion, Finewool Lamb – Roma Middle School; Bryan Izaguirre – 3rd in class – Roma High School; and Jason Izaguirre – 4th in class - RT Barrera Elementary.

Roma ISD Switches to Standard Response Protocol for Emergency Situations In an effort to ensure our students and community are following the best safety guidelines available, Roma ISD is happy to announce our district is now following the “Standard Response Protocol” for all emergency situations. The Standard Response Protocol is a set of actions and language used in emergency situations. Emergency responders across the United State and now in Starr County are following SRP to ensure quick action and better team preparedness. As part of the effort to educate community
members, we hope you will take the opportunity to reinforce the terminology used in SRP with your children at home. Our schools and Roma ISD Police Department are training all children on SRP. Please see the handout below and go over it to reinforce these guidelines with your children. Please help us all be prepared in the event of the unthinkable. We appreciate your support in keeping our children and their future safe. For more information about the SRP please visit https://www. iloveuguys.org/srp.html.

“NO CUIDABA MI FAMILIA” El consumo de las drogas me fue llevando totalmente a la perdición y eso también afectó severamente a la familia. La drogas me robaron todo y ya no cuidaba a mi familia estaba a punto del divorcio. Hasta que llegue aqui. Fue aquí que mi vida comenzó a cambiar. Ahora soy una persona muy diferente. Estoy libre de las di drogas, y tengo una familia feliz.

Your vehicle has a recall . now what?
Recalls can affect any vehicle. Follow the instructions on the recall notice and have the problem addressed promptly. Recalls are safety precautions taken should a portion of a vehicle or the entire car or truck not operate in the manner it was intended. In many instances, auto manufacturers will directly contact customers who are affected by a recall via a letter, email or both. Individuals also can stay current on recalls by visiting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website (www.NHTSA.gov). Drivers can follow these important steps if they learn of a recall. ·Don’t panic, but don’t ignore recalls. The experts at Kelley Blue Book say recalls often occur due to a problem in the manufacturing process in similar models, and this issue may surface in other vehicles. Recalls do not guarantee vehicles
will malfunction or break down. However, consumers are urged to take recalls seriously, adopting a “better safe than sorry” approach when recalls are announced. ·Follow the instructions. A recall notice should come with instructions. Instructions often advise drivers to take their vehicles to the dealership where the cars were purchased. Notices may provide information regarding nearby dealerships for drivers who have moved since buying their cars or trucks. ·No payment should be necessary. The cost of repairing the recalled part should not fall on your shoulders. Such repairs are paid by the manufacturer. The financial resource Bankrate.com notes that, “if you had the repair made before the recall was issued (up to a full year), the automaker is legally obligated to reimburse you,
as long as you had the work done at one of its franchised dealers.” Save all receipts for the work. If work was done by a private mechanic, drivers still may be eligible for reimbursement. ·Be patient. Dealerships are not responsible for making repairs until the date indicated on the recall notice, so motorists may need to wait before having their vehicles repaired. · Request a loaner vehicle. In some instances, recalls may take a few days to fix. Although not every dealership may make loaner vehicles available, it’s still worth requesting one so you are not inconvenienced. Anyone having difficulty with a recall can contact the NHTSA online, by phone or by mail. Those who suspect a safety problem also can contact the agency and report their concerns.

If you enjoy r e a d i n g about nature, try actually observing it. Weather permitting, R a n c h o Lomitas, where I live and which inspires my articles, is offering a tour on Saturday, Feb. 16, from 10:00 a.m. to noon. The tour provides a breakfast snack and then a guided trailer ride through the Ranch’s wild thorn-scrub. If you, and perhaps your family, are interested, call (956) 486-2576 or (956) 500-1392 or email info@ rancholomitas.com for details and directions; it’s just 8 miles from the RGC postoffice. I look forward to meeting some of you on the 16th.
I’d like to acquire a couple of cacti but need assistance: There are 23 species of cacti native to Starr County. We have 21 of them growing at Rancho Lomitas where I live. I’d like to add the missing two. If any of you can tell me how I might get them, please let me know. They are: Eagleclaw Cactus (Glandulicactus uncinatus) and Yellow-flowered A l i c o c h e (Echinocereus papillosus). I might need two of each if they can’t be selfpollinated. Even one would be a good start. You can contact me online at jimseeden@gmail.com or by phone at 956-486-2700. Many thanks for any assistance you can provide.
