During the Presentation of Funds on February 2nd, USDA State Director Lillian Salerno announced that this is the largest amount that United States Department of Agriculture has ever awarded in the state of Texas for water infrastructure.

This improvement project will allow the water treatment system to expand from the current 1.5 million gallons per day to 4 million gallons per day resulting in better service for current and future residents.

Other components includes the construction of a 250,000 gallon ground storage tank and the rehabilitation of the existing pumping structure located on the Rio Grande River.

In addition, the funding will also replace 24 miles of existing small diameter 1 to 4 inch pipes with more efficient 8-inch water lines that will alleviate water line breaks in the system and support the installation of new hydrants for additional fire protection.

Starr County Fair Honors Volunteer Rio Grande City High School Mariachi CASCABEL of the Year, Alejandra Gonzalez Advanced to the State Mariachi Festival

Alejandra Gonzalez has been named the 2024 Volunteer of the Year for the Starr County Fair.

She will be recognized at the Starr County Fair Parade set for Saturday, February 17, at 10:00 a.m.

Alejandra has been an active volunteer in the Fair for the past twenty-two years, and she represents Lone Star National Bank as their representative on

the Starr County Fair Board.

A Director of Retail Branch Operations and Senior VicePresident of Lone Star National Bank, Alejandra has been a real asset to the Fair, serving at the gate with collections, a job that requires much organization, time, and effort.

Alejandra has been a consistent team leader of the representatives of the bank serving faithfully throughout the years in a position that requires much dedication.

Her family has been very supportive of her participation, and she is grateful to her husband Isaias Gonzalez, daughter Michelle A. Gonzalez, and son Mark A. Gonzalez. Alejandra stated, “I am grateful that my daughter, Michelle, has assisted

me in participating at the gate for the past ten years.” She added, “I also appreciate all the Lone Star National Bank staff for their continued support, as they have participated in assisting at the Gate for these past 22 years. It has been a wonderful team to be a part of.”

She is also very proud of the bank’s sponsorship of the Fair and the support that Lone Star National Bank has consistently provided through the years. 229th Judicial District Judge Baldemar Garza and staff visit the DAEP to motivate the students The Honorable Baldemar Garza, 229th Judicial Court Judge, and his staff visited the DAEP on Wednesday, January 31, 2024. Judge Garza spoke to the students about his humble beginnings, growing up with limited resources, but through hard work “ganas” and dedication, he became the man he is today.

He stressed to the students that they can become anything they want in life, as long as they have the will and determination to do it. He told them that the only ones holding them back are themselves.

His staff then shared about their careers as well.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Texas Delta Theta Master---Texas Delta Theta Master of Beta Sigma Phi has enjoyed celebrations at their most recent meetings. Their December meeting was a Christmas celebration, including carols, a delicious meal at Jesse’s, a Christmas book shared by Nelda Laurel, and a White Elephant Gift Exchange. Type 2 diabetes is a serious condition that affects millions of people across the globe. In the United States alone, more than 37 million people have diabetes, with approximately 90 to 95 percent of those individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

When a person has type 2 diabetes, their body either doesn’t produce enough insulin or it resists insulin. Without treatment,

What is prediabetes? type 2 diabetes can lead to serious health implications.

Before an individual develops type 2 diabetes, a precursor known as prediabetes may be diagnosed. Johns Hopkins Medicine says having prediabetes means blood glucose levels are higher than normal, even if they have not yet reached the point that indicates diabetes. Prediabetes is nothing to take lightly, as even

this condition can increase risk of injury or illness to the heart, kidneys and nerves.

Prediabetes typically does not show any signs or symptoms.

One possible sign, darkened skin on certain parts of the body like the neck, armpits and groin, may be overlooked, states the Mayo Clinic. Still, of those with prediabetes, 80 percent do not know they have it, according to

the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Routine physical examinations and bloodwork are a key tool in diagnosing prediabetes and getting people the care they need.

The CDC indicates a fasting blood sugar level of 100 to 125 mg/dL (99 or lower is normal) is considered prediabetes. A level of 126 mg/DL or higher indicates diabetes. The good news is that prediabetes does not need to turn into full-blown diabetes if people embrace various strategies. · Aspire to live a healthier lifestyle: Exercising more, losing weight and changing the foods

one eats can stop and even reverse the progression of prediabetes, says Johns Hopkins Medicine.

A doctor may suggest a diabetes prevention program. · Medication: Medications to lower blood sugar may be prescribed. · Manage stress: High stress levels may exacerbate hormonal responses and lead to prediabetes.

Finding ways to reduce stress can help. · Quit smoking: There are scores of reasons to quit smoking, and avoiding a diabetes diagnosis is just one of them.

Prediabetes is a serious concern

that may escalate and turn into type 2 diabetes if left unchecked.

Individuals who are overweight, have large waist sizes, are sedentary, are over the age of 35, and have a family history of type 2 diabetes should talk to their doctors about their own risk for the disease.

Keep your brain sharp as you age Cognitive decline is on the minds of many adults as they get older. Memory loss and trouble processing things can sometimes be a side effect of aging, as Everyday Health says the brain

changes in size and structure as a person gets older. These changes can affect how well the brain works over time. Furthermore, illnesses affecting the brain, such as Alzheimer’s disease, may

start showing their symptoms in people when they’ve reached their mid-60s, says the National Institute on Aging.

Cognitive decline and dementia are not a certainty of aging.

But older adults interested in strengthening their brains may want to consider these strategies.

Address high blood pressure High blood pressure can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Maintaining healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels is associated with better cognitive function, according to data published in 2021 in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Use all your senses Harvard Health says the more senses used in learning something, the more of the brain that is involved in retaining the memory. Studies have shown that images paired with pleasant aromas leads to better recall later on.

Exercise regularly Staying physically active helps maintain blood flow to the brain, which also helps reduce the risk for hypertension.

Eat brain-healthy foods According to Cone Health Medical Group, studies show eating fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like tuna, salmon and mackerel, decreases risk for cognitive decline. People should avoid saturated fats, trans fats and hydrogenated oils.

Read and write frequently According to a study in the journal Neurology, regular reading and writing in one’s older years reduced the rate of memory decline by 32 percent.

Joining a book club or simply

reading more on one’s own can improve cognition. Similarly, writing improves memory and communication abilities and can help strengthen the brain as well.

Drink healthy beverages Tea and coffee can improve alertness and focus, as they’re rich in polyphenols and antioxidants. A Place for Mom says caffeine in these beverages can help solidify new memories.

Avoid drinking sugary beverages and limit consumption of alcohol, as neither boasts brain-boosting properties.

Keeping the brain sharp is a multilayered process that involves healthy foods and beverages, exercise and brainstimulating activities.

It’s widely accepted that a year is 365 days long. However, that statement is not entirely accurate.

In fact, it takes Earth a little more than 365 days (365.24223 days to be precise) to orbit the sun. A calendar cannot accommodate that small distinction every year.

In order to ensure that seasons do not start drifting from the difference between the Earth’s rotation and the time it takes to get around the sun, leap years were established to keep the calendar more consistent and working like clockwork. The first modern leap year took place in 1752.

Certain guidelines were established to determine which

years would be leap years. A leap year typically arrives every four years. However, in terms of end-of-century years, they must be divisible by 400. That is why the year 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not, according to Royal Museums Greenwich.

This approach is not an entirely foolproof plan since there still may be very small discrepancies in time. Leap seconds have been added to keep time ticking correctly at various points throughout the years. This occurred on December 31 in the years 2005, 2008 and 2012, and also on June 30, 2015.

In terms of adding a day to the

calendar for the leap year, it is placed in February, which already is the shortest month. While February is typically 28 days, in leap years the month features 29 days. A leap year next occurs in February 2024, and then again in 2028, 2032 and 2036.

The parade is set for Saturday, February 17, at 10:00 a.m., and the theme is “Cultivating Futures~ Nurturing Traditions.” The Parade Marshals are Jorge Falcon and family, his wife, Maria, and daughters Stephanie Falcon, Klarissa Falcon, and Briana Falcon.
