Vocational Nursing students from STC’s Nursing and Allied Health Campus have stepped up to assist communities in Starr County as they begin to receive their COVID vaccinations. Twenty LVN students from the Starr County Campus, under the supervision of instructor Sylvia Contreras, were invited to participate in administering COVID-19 vaccines to patients at a clinic with Starr County Memorial Hospital employees. The initial vaccination event with STC took place on Jan. 28 and Feb. 4. Vaccinations continue on Feb. 6

with Starr County Memorial. COVID-19 vaccines are administered by healthcare professionals including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physicians assistants, and pharmacy technicians who have received training on how to administer the vaccine and how to manage very rare side effects of the vaccines. “This is who we are,” said STC NAH Dean Dr. Jayson Valerio. “As NAH students and faculty at South Texas College, our main mission is to meet the healthcare needs of our growing and diverse community, and right now they need our help.”

Along with LVN students, Valerio said he has been urging NAH students from its LVN program, Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program as well as its new Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) since the fall to be prepared for assisting local communities. “I told them before the fall semester ended to be ready because at any moment we anticipate that they will need our help to administer the COVID-19 vaccines,” Valerio said. “I want to instill in our students the social responsibility and civic responsibility because they are our future healthcare leaders.”

HB 1621 expands full day Pre-K for all children regardless of qualification status. State Rep. Ryan Guillen (D-Rural South Texas) filed legislation last week that would offer full day pre-kindergarten classes to any child. “Research shows that Pre-K is a valuable educational and social developmental tool that improves our children’s chances of success. But currently, only a certain set of qualifying kids are eligible for the program, “Guillen said. Pre-kindergarten classes help children develop necessary skills in cognition, literacy, math, and physical development as they prepare to begin school. Currently, free pre-K classes are only available to children

•Mantenga su calentador Roma High School treated the Mariachi Program students to a sweet treat in thanks for their hard work portátil al menos tres pies de preparing for the Presidential Inauguration activities. cualquier artículo que pueda quemarse.

Talk, they hear you…

IT’S PRE-KINDER Roundup Time!

One of the most influential factors during a child’s adolescence is maintaining a strong, open relationship with a parent. If you talk to your kids directly and honestly, they are more likely to respect your rules and advice about alcohol and drug use. When parents talk with their children easily and often about alcohol and other drugs, they can protect their children from many of the high-risk behaviors associated with using these drugs. Roma High Grad Tops Billboard Charts Roma ISD Loves Starr County Memorial Hospital

One of our very own, Edgar Barrera, Roma High Class of 2008 and Band Program student, is the man behind some of the most popular music heard on the radio and streaming waves today! Read in a recent article by Billboard Magazine how Edgar’s dream to be a professional musician landed him a job as an intern making coffee, but now has

him working with Marc Anthony and Daddy Yankee, and winning Latin Grammy Awards. He didn’t take the traditional route, but decided to risk it all to use his musical knowledge and passion to make his fantasy a reality. “As a word of advice to Roma ISD students I’d say to not be afraid to capitalize on what makes them different and unique,” said

Barrera. “Our community is so rich in talent and culture waiting to be discovered.” We are so proud of you Edgar!! Thank you for serving as an inspiration for generations of Gladiators! https://www.billboard.com/ articles/columns/latin/9517705/ edgar-barrera-interviewsongwriter

Several schools and departments provided goodies, which were used to fill 280 goodie bags Roma ISD dropped off as a pre-Valentine’s

Day treat to the SCMH staff. Also, schools made cards and a banner to hang to cheer the workers. The school district posted a sign to display in front of the hospital as a reminder to staff how much we appreciate them, especially our Mighty Gladiator alums!! Thank you to the teams at F. J. When will self-driving cars hit the road? Anticipation tends to build around everything from the latest version of a popular smartphone to a new incarnation of a beloved gaming system. But perhaps no advancement in technology is as highly anticipated as the selfdriving car. Industry experts note that the hype around self-driving cars, sometimes referred to as autonomous vehicles, has existed since 2004, when United States

military experiments involving self-driving vehicles in the Mojave Desert garnered both attention and excitement. That anticipation and excitement waned as 2004 was left further and further behind in the rearview mirror, but the race to become the first auto manufacturer to build and offer driverless vehicles is still very much on. For example, in 2018 General Motors indicated its intent to make a fleet of self-driving taxis available in San Francisco by 2020. That did not come to fruition, though other auto manufacturers, notably Tesla, have indicated they have their eyes on potentially offering autonomous taxis in 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic complicated, and likely delayed, the arrival of self-driving automobiles, though it remains to be seen just how much the pandemic affected the arrival of driverless vehicles. A recent report from Bloomberg New Energy Finance noted that many auto manufacturers who have worked on self-driving technology had initially set their sights on deployment in 2021. However, lab closures and social distancing measures enacted in response to the pandemic may have made it highly unlikely that 2021 will be the year the world sees its first fleet of self-driving taxis hit the road.

White-crowned sparrows are here for the winter There are 33 species of sparrows in the U. S. and we get to see almost half of them here in the Valley. However, many of them are here only when they migrate south for food and to avoid the winter weather in the north. Sparrows are often referred to as “little brown jobbies” by bird watchers because sparrows are typically just mottled brown and very difficult to identify. A few, including our year around resident black-throated sparrows, have distinctive markings. My subject today, the white-crowned sparrow, is one of the more attractive and easy to identify. They’ve migrated here for the winter and are a delight to see. Their size is typical of sparrows and they’re plumage is mostly brownish stripes and dots but a glance at the head easily

identifies them. The top of the head has four distinct black and three white alternating stripes. There’s a similar bird called the white-throated sparrow but it has a white throat and yellow between the eyes and bill which is blackish. The white-crowned has a pink or yellow bill and no white on the throat; its throat, breast and belly are plain gray. They’re found in areas with open space but with brushy thickets nearby to retreat to for protection. They mostly forage on the ground for seeds but enjoy an occasional insect if it’s easily caught. Their range extends throughout most of the U. S. and Canada with the highest concentrations in the western mountains where they’re quite common. We get to enjoy them here in the Valley for a few months.

How to use the internet more safely The world relies on computerized devices and the internet is as much as ever. The internet is used for professional, personal and educational purposes. The COVID-19 pandemic increased the global reliance on the internet. As more time is spent online, it is essential that all internet users refresh their memories on safety practices. ·Secure your internet connection. The first step toward safety is to use a secure connection. Your local internet connection can be a weak point that allows data to be compromised. Use a password-protected router and WiFi connection to improve security.

·Consider using a VPN. VPN stands for “virtual private network.” When you use a VPN, it encrypts all data from the moment it leaves your computer, tablet or other device and enters the internet. It provides an extra layer against hackers, and also can provide secure access to the internet even if you are using public Wi-Fi, according to Kapertsky security products. ·Protect your passwords. When creating passwords for accounts, do not share them, and also select unique, complicated passwords. Include a mix of numbers, symbols and letters. Upon moving to Rio Grande City, she wasted no time to do what she does best: Lead, Volunteer and Community S e r v i c e . She also standardized bilingual education and obtained a grant from the Public Works Administration to build two new schools in the county. In 1935 she also established the Starr County Student Loan Fund. Scott served as the Roma School Superintendent from 1950 to 1957, when she retired from the field of education. In September 1957 Roma ISD named a school after her: Florence J. Aside from her work in education She continued to write and do research; in 1937 her Historical Heritage of the Rio Grande Valley was published by the Naylor Company of San Antonio. Two years later “Letters and Papers of Governor David Johnson and family, 1810– 1855,” which she edited, appeared in the Proceedings of the South Carolina Historical Association.
