A Letter From Heaven

When tomorrow starts without me, and I’m not here to see, If the sun should rise and find your eyes filled with tears for me. I wish so much you wouldn’t cry the way you did today, While thinking of the many things, we didn’t get to say. I know how much you love me, as much as I love you, And each time you think of me, I know you’ll miss me too. When tomorrow starts without me, don’t think we’re far apart, for every time you think of me, I’m right there in your heart.

Alto Bonito Elementary 3rd Happy New Year 2020 from Texas Delta Theta Master Six Weeks Principal’s Award

Alto Bonito Elementary had its 3rd Six Weeks Awards Assembly. Thirty-two students were awarded with the Principal’s Award Certificate. These students were chosen from each homeroom based on overall academics, behavior, and daily attendance. As an added treat, they experienced having breakfast with the school principal and received a goodie bag. Congratulations to these students and keep up the great work! Go Roadrunners! (Pictured with these students is Principal, Mrs. Yvette Pena)

Texas Delta Theta Master of Beta Sigma Phi has kicked off the New Year in a new decade with several programs based on the theme “Power of the Dream.” Moni Palacio served as hostess for the first meeting of January, and Diana Peña presented the program on Margarita Zarate Gonzalez, 1883-1921. She was a teacher and the first telephone operator in Starr County. Married in 1907 to Canuto Gonzalez, they had four children, Flavio, Arnoldo, Canuto, and Isauro. Nelda Laurel presented a program on Evarista Hinojosa Madrigal at the second meeting in January. “Varita” was born October 10, 1910 in Mexico. After attending St. Mary’s Academy in Austin, she returned to Rio Grande City to help with the family lumberyard on the corner of Water St. and San Antonio. After her Dad passed away, she managed Madrigal Lumberyard. She was an active member of several religious, professional and civic organizations in the county. Tissa Peterson presided at both meetings, held at Jesse’s Enchanted Place. The sorority is making plans to participate in the annual Sweetheart Ball in February.

Texas Physicians Explain Herd Immunity Needed to Fight Contagious-Disease Hotspots How do umbrellas protect us from disease? A Texas physician cites an umbrella analogy to explain that immunizing enough people helps protect us all, thanks to a phenomenon called herd immunity (community immunity). The protective umbrella of community immunity occurs when a large enough percentage of the population – at least eight in 10 – is vaccinated, becomes immune to infection from diseases, and provides a collective layer of protection for the individuals who are not immune. The higher the vaccination rate, the greater chance to shield infants, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems from infectious disease outbreaks. For example, a highly contagious illness like measles requires a vaccination rate of 90% to 95% for community immunity to work. Polio, which is less contagious, requires a vaccination rate of about 80% to 85%. If enough people in a community have their shots, even those who refuse to get vaccinated are protected by the immunized, said Austin pediatrician Ari Brown, MD. However, if too many people refuse to vaccinate, community immunity falls apart. “When you get vaccinated you are getting excellent protection,” said Dr. Brown, “but you actually get even better protection when most people in your community are also vaccinated because it makes it even harder for outbreaks

to occur.” Maintaining community immunity is a challenge because Texas is one of 18 states that allow parents to refuse mandatory school vaccinations for their children for reasons of conscience. Dr. Brown says too many parental refusals within a community can create vaccine-free “hotspots” that in turn could lead to disease outbreaks. “A lot of families who opt not to vaccinate their kids choose the same preschool or the same private school to send their kids, and then their vaccination rate is even lower than the general community,” Dr. Brown said. That low rate creates a zone of vulnerability for everyone in that school or area. Texas has several hotspots – including Collin, Harris, Tarrant, and Travis counties – areas that are likely to see measles outbreaks in coming years, reports the Texas Medical Association’s (TMA’s) Texas Medicine magazine. During the 2018-19 school year, 69 accredited kindergarten through 12th-grade Texas private schools had exemption rates at 10% or higher, high enough to weaken community immunity against measles, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. Dr. Brown said patient participation is the key to sustaining community immunity. “Think of germs like the rain,” she explained in a TMA video.

“When you get vaccinated, you are actually putting on a raincoat to protect you [from diseasecausing antigens]. It’s better, though, to have an umbrella AND a raincoat to protect you. The only way you have an umbrella, though, is if the whole community shares in buying the umbrella [most everyone must get their shots]. By protecting your community with the umbrella, you are also protecting people who can’t get vaccinated and can’t wear that raincoat,” said Dr. Brown. “When 90 to 95% of your community is protected it keeps outbreaks from happening.” She added, “We know this because we’ve seen it happen,” referring to disease outbreaks that have occurred in areas with low vaccination rates. Get vaccinated, she suggests, to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your community. For more than a year TMA highlighted contagious diseases that childhood and adult vaccinations can prevent, including measles, chickenpox and shingles, pertussis (whooping cough), and many others.

The Community Historical Archaeology Project with Schools Program, or CHAPS Program, at UTRGV has developed a traveling museum exhibit that showcases all historical eras of Fort Brown history called “Discovering Fort Brown.” This exhibit was designed to travel easily to many different venues throughout south Texas and beyond. It will stand at the Fort Ringgold Fort Hospital West Wing starting on February 3rd through March 30, 2020 and will opened for self-tours Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM. The project was created in part by UTRGV anthropology and history students, as part of an upper level course titled “Public Heritage of the Rio Grande Valley.”

The project also includes a new audio podcast that are featured on a mobile web app, a map guide and brochure. All aspects of this exhibit project are all bilingual. The CHAPS Program team has been envisioning this project since August of 2017 and is excited to have it all come together so nicely. The trail guide and audio podcasts have been completely overhauled and to be able to offer it all in both English and Spanish is a wonderful addition to historical tourism of the Rio Grande Valley. This bilingual exhibit assists to accommodate our friends south of the border who are very much a part of the history of region. The Congressman selected Rodriguez to be his guest, to honor him for all his hard work, commitment and dedication in wanting to serve our country. “It was an honor to have Alex as my guest for the State of the

Union and highlight his dedication to serving our community and country,” said Congressman Cuellar. “After listening to his story, it is clear he is a driven and selfless individual who displays true passion for helping others. I thank Alex for his work in the community and his aspiration to protect and serve our country.” Although Alex faces challenges with dyslexia, he has been actively involved for the past three years ALEX, page 4

Joel Villarreal Mayor of Rio Grande City spoke along with U.S. Congressmen Henry Cuellar. They were joined on stage by former Texas United Farm Workers

Director Rebecca Flores, former Texas UFW president Arturo Rodriguez and National Farm Worker Association member Daria Vera who offered of first-hand knowledge about the mobilization of workers in the 1960s.

Starr County Huelguistas Markers Dedication Ceremony South Texas College’s Starr County Campus is built on what used to be far-spreading melon fields. They represented a huge cash crop for the growers, a source of work and income for local farmworkers, but also a place of discrimination and injustice for Valley residents. Due to these grievances, at the height of melon season in 1966 the farmworkers walked off of the fields and marched for better wages, better working conditions and civil rights that migrants and Mexican-Americans were not always afforded. Prior to the strike, march, and farmworker movement the pay for the labor was only 40 cents per hour. The protests began in Rio Grande City on July 4, 1966 and concluded three months later at the State Capitol in Austin with a subsequent rally on Sept. 5, 1966. On Friday, Jan. 31, 2020, STC, community members and even some surviving protestors from

54 years ago were a part of the ceremony to unveil a historical marker designated by the Texas Historical Commission “One of the things that has become very important for us, (even though) we dropped community out of our name some time ago, but we’ve never been stronger in community,” Starr County Industrial Foundation President and STC Board of Trustees Vice Chair Rose Benavidez said. “For

us, it’s ensuring the generations who are transformed in our doors by being educated, also understand the richness of the culture and the richness of our own history.” Two markers were unveiled, one in English detailing the event and another in Spanish along with the names of the farmworkers who made history. “This is a poignant as it gets,” Benavidez said. “This is a place that used to be harvested by

City of Escobares Municipal Park Groundbreaking Ceremony

City of Escobares held their groundbreaking ceremony for the city municipal park on Friday, February 7, 2020. The history of Escobares was alive through the members that were present. Those amongst the crowd were the honored guest of the Roman Escobar Family who donated the land that was once their family homestead.

Amongst the dazzling array of kindhearted citizens were the members of the Escobares City Council, Economic Development Corporation, and Industrial Foundation who could not be more honored by their guest’s presence and their generosity. The park will be located on Southwest Corner of Bazan St. and Lopez St. in Escobares. Citizens will have access to recreational equipment, walk/run

path, and family BBQ seating areas. The City of Escobares will be working diligently to complete this project and prepare it for generations to come. This project was made possible through Texas Parks and Wildlife and the land donation from the Roman Escobar Family; hence, the completion of this project will be a task that the City of Escobares enthusiastically takes.

We think of you, in silence we often speak your name, all we have are memories and your picture in a frame. Your memory is our keepsake with which we’ll never part. Fort Ringgold 175th Anniversary (1848-2023) Commission Appointed The Rio Grande City Consolidated School District who owns Fort Ringgold has appointed a commission to begin planning for the fort’s 175th Anniversary (1848-2023) in 2023 and begin the process to renovate, upgrade the existing historical buildings in order to get them ready for this majestic event. In order to get the process moving for building renovations the commission will have it’s plate full. But with ample time, the commission believes this can be accomplished. Their motto is to “Rebuild and Revive”. Today, Fort Ringgold remains part of the RGCCISD school district. Since 1946 when the Fort shut its door, the school district

acquired the fort and transformed it into an educational complex. Many RGC High School Alumni attended school at the old fort and have a passion to restore it to its grand glory. New schools have been built and the fort slowly became abandoned as its barracks were no longer needed for classrooms. In May 2015, the school district created “Revive Fort Ringgold” a non-profit 501 ( c) organization tasked to find ways on what do to with the now abandoned buildings and to seek grants and other financial means to restore the abandoned buildings. But it was in Dec. 2019, the school board decided to create a commission Photo: top to left: COL (R ) Ross Barrera, Ms. Vilma Garza RGCCISD Superintendent, Mr. Eleazar to take this project forward and to Velazquez school board president, Mrs. Elia Ramos, Mr. Joel Garza, and Ms. Diana Uribe. commit to rebuild, restore and ensuring that our local history Committees are also standing preserve Fort Ringgold. is portrayed accurate and shared up to help with the planning and Appointed to lead the with our local students. Congratulations to the Roma Middle School Band for being named a recipient of the 2019 John Philip Sousa Foundation Sudler Silver Cup! The Sudler Cup award is the highest international honor that a middle school band program can receive. It is awarded only to bands that have maintained a level of the highest quality of musical performance and organizational distinction at the international level

over a period of at least seven years. To qualify for this achievement, the concert band needs to have been rated “superior” at state, regional or national levels of concert activities. The band should have performed at regional, state, national or professional meetings of significance, which can include state music conventions, regional or national MENC meetings and state or national band association conventions. The director must

have been in the position for at least seven years, including the current year. Additionally, a number of band students must have participated in district honor or region bands, orchestras or similar groups. The total program of music should exemplify what is considered a sound viable, music education program for this level of endeavor. The Sudler Cup is administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation,

a non-profit foundation dedicated to the international promotion of band music. Established in 1985, the Sudler Cup has only been awarded to 58 bands! This marks the first time that a band from the Rio Grande Valley has ever been named to this outstanding list of band programs. This truly marks a banner year for the Roma Middle School Band program. A special presentation

Roma Middle School Band One of Only Two in the Country to Earn Highly Prestigious Sudler Cup From John Philip Sousa Foundation

of the official Sudler Cup, presented by a member of the Sudler committee, and a concert will take place in May of 2020 in Roma, Texas, in celebration of this momentous occasion. Many thanks go out to the students (both past and present), directors, parents, administration, and community of Roma ISD for your unwavering support of the program and music education!

Gone But Not Forgotten We sat beside your bedside our hearts were crushed and sore; We did our best to the end ‘til we could do no more. In tears we watched you sinking, we watched you fade away; And though our hearts were breaking, we knew you could not stay. You left behind some aching hearts that loved you most sincere; We never shall and never will forget you Mother dear.

We wish to express our sincere appreciation to our many relatives and friends for their presence, lowers, cards, masses, food, and comforting words during our deepest grief for the loss of our beloved mother. A special thanks to Starr Home Health in Rio Grande City, Rio Grande City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center & Staff, SCMH & Staff, West Main Mufler Shop and Sanchez Funeral Home.

THANKSGIVING NOVENA TO ST. JUDE O Holy St. Jude, Apostle and Martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful intercessor of all who invoke your special patronage in time of need, to you I have recourse from the depth of my heart and humbly beg to whom God has given such great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present and urgent petition. In return I promise to make your name known and cause you to be invoked. St. Jude pray for us and all who invoke your aid. Amen.

Say three Our Fathers, three Hail Marys and Glorias. Publication must be promised. This Novena has never been known to fail. I have had my request granted. Publication promised.

NOVENA “Miraculous Prayer” Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it, Dear Jesus, and place it within your own heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail.

Roma High All-State Football Player Signs To Play College Ball Congratulations to Roma High School Mighty Gladiator All-State Football Player H i r a m Flores on officially signing with Southern Nazarene University in Oklahoma to play college football. Surrounded by his parents, family members, friends, and school and district administrators, the Class of 2020 Senior signed his letter of intent. He says he plans to study either business administration or international business at SNU. “When I met the people at SNU, I felt like this was going to be my second home and my second family; I felt that when I

went to visit the school and met the team and coaches,” said Flores of his decision to join the Mighty Crimson Storm Football Program. “I’m looking forward to the new opportunities going away to college will provide. I think living away from my family will really help me mature and be open to new possibilities.” Flores’ message to future generations of Gladiator Football players and athletes is to set your goals and never give up. “Not everyone gets an opportunity like this – it is a real blessing. It is a real dream come true since I was a little kid,” he said. “I want other students to know to never stop grinding and always keep dreaming. Everything is possible if you want it enough. I kept my mind straight and focused and you can do it too.” Flores has been a dedicated

student athlete for Roma High, and his coaches say he will be a role model for the future. “Of course we are very proud of Hiram and happy to see him earn this opportunity,” said Roma High’s Head Football Coach Frank Villeneuva. “He has worked hard on the field and in the classroom. He has been a real team leader and a source of positivity for our team. We will miss him as he moves on, but we know he will serve as a role model for all our Gladiators rising

up through the ranks as student athletes. I also want to thank and congratulate his parents and family. They have been dedicated to taking him to camps and providing other outside opportunities that have helped him grow as a player and young man. Parental support is key to the success of students like Hiram. Thank you to them, and good luck to the entire family as Hiram begins this new journey. The Gladiator Nation will be cheering you on!”

Mission Critical! Contact USDA Farm Service Agency Now to Enroll in Key Safety Net Programs – Don’t Let the March 16 Deadline Pass You By By Gary Six, State Executive Director in Texas, USDA Farm Service Agency The clock is ticking… March 16 is THE LAST day to make what is likely one of the most important business decisions you will make for your farming operation this year. If you have not already visited your local Farm Service Agency (FSA) county office to make your election for either the Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) or the Price Loss Coverage (PLC) program and to sign your annual enrollment contract, you should call and make your appointment now. Many of you are gearing up to head to the field for spring planting, but I cannot stress enough the importance of not letting this deadline get lost in the hectic day-to-day obligations of farm life. If you fail to enroll for 2019 ARC or PLC, you will be ineligible to receive a payment for the 2019 crop year. ARC and PLC provide financial protections to farmers from substantial drops in crop prices or revenues and are vital economic safety nets for most American farms. These programs cover 20 commodities produced

in the U.S. FSA anticipates more than 1.7 million producers will enroll in ARC or PLC - that’s a lot of producers to assist in a short period of time. As of Feb. 3, FSA records in Texas show 36,433 farms out of an expected 87,593 farms have completed ARC or PLC enrollment for the 2019 crop year. Want to maximize your time visiting with FSA? Inquire about deadlines and options for also enrolling in 2020 ARC or PLC and updating PLC payment yields. Our staff will help you make the most out of your visit or set you up with a future appointment to help check FSA programs off your lengthy “to do” list. If you’re still unsure about the choice of ARC or PLC, we offer online decision tools to help you determine the best program election for your farming operation. To access these tools, visit www.fsa.usda.gov/arc-plc. Call FSA today for an appointment. To locate your local FSA office, visit farmers.gov/ service-center-locator.

Xavier and Lori Perez Named Starr County Fair Parade Marshals

Xavier Eli Perez and Lori Peterson Perez are being honored as 2020 Parade Marshals by the Starr County Fair Association and will lead the annual Fair Parade on Saturday, February 22. The parade will proceed East on Main Street into Fort Ringgold in Rio Grande City at 11:00 a.m. with lineup on South Britton Avenue and Water Street beginning at 9:00 a.m. Xavier and Lori both serve on the Board of Directors of the Starr County Fair Association as officers. She is Vice-president of Operations, and he is Treasurer. In 2014, Xavier and Lori were honored as the Starr County Fair’s Volunteers of the Year because of their dedication to the Fair. Lori serves as chairman of the Livestock Committee, coordinates publicity and social media, and has chaired numerous events throughout the years. Xavi has been

treasurer since 2006 and has chaired the Breeding Cattle Division and Gate Committee. The couple both graduated from Rio Grande City High School, he in 1986 and she in 1989, when she served as Starr County Fair Queen. Xavi and Lori were both members of the Starr Grande 4-H Club and participated in the Starr County Fair throughout their school years. He showed bulls and a hog, and she showed heifers, lambs, rabbits, and capons. The couple met up at the Fair after college 25 years ago, had their first date there, and they have both been volunteering with the Fair since they returned to Rio Grande City in 1997. Helping with the Fair is a tradition with both the Perez and Peterson families. Gustavo Perez, Xavi’s Dad, and James Peterson, Lori’s Dad, were both founding incorporating directors of the Starr County Fair Association, Inc. in 1983 and are named on the plaque next to the office at the present fairgrounds. Lori’s Dad was president of the Starr County Fair for many years, and the coliseum building is named in his memory. Her mother, Tissa Peterson, also serves on the board and chairs several divisions. The couple states that their dedication and service to God and their community were instilled in them at a young age by their Christian parents. Xavier Eli is the son of the late Gustavo and Yolanda Perez. He graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics

in 1989. He is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Rio Grande Valley Chapter. Xavier serves as the Starr County Auditor and owner of Xavier Eli Perez, CPA, PLLC, and he is part owner of Border Enterprises, Inc. He serves on the Starr County Industrial Foundation Board of Directors, the IBC Bank Board, and served as an officer of the Rio Grande City Jaycees for many years. He coached youth baseball and football and travel teams for many years. Xavi attends First Baptist Church, and he is a member of Immaculate Conception Church and the Knights of Columbus. He participates in the monthly Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast. Lori Peterson Perez is the daughter of Jewel “Tissa” Peterson and the late James Peterson. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics in 1993 from Texas A&M University and her Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from St. Mary’s University School of Law in 1997. She is licensed as an attorney by the State Bar of Texas, licensed to practice before the United States District Court, and is board certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Lori is an Assistant County Attorney and runs her own law firm. She is a member of the Order of the Barristers, the College of the State Bar of Texas, the Pro Bono College, and she is the treasurer of the Starr County Bar Association. She has served on the Rio Grande City Economic Development Corporation since 2007 and currently serves as vice president. She is an active member of First Baptist Church, where she serves as organist. She is a member and past president of Beta Zeta Omicron of Beta Sigma Phi and GFWC Texas Florence J. Scott Study Club.

Xavier and Lori are both members of the Texas A&M Former Students Association, the Hidalgo-Starr A&M Club and the Texas 4-H Friends and Alumni Association. They are founding members and officers of the RGC Quarterback Club, RGCHS Rattler Baseball Booster Club, and the Rattler Golf Booster Club. The couple has four sons, Dustin Alan (Sarah), Jason Eli, Bryan Ray, and Steven James. They are the proud grandparents of a grandson, Camdyn Alan, five months. Xavier manages La Pelota Ranch and the Peterson Beefmaster herd, with help from his sons. They are proud to show registered Beefmaster cattle that they have raised from birth. When asked about changes they have observed in the Fair over the years, Xavier stated, “There are many more volunteers and I’m always pleased to see the ‘kids’ who used to participate in the Fair coming back as volunteers.” Lori added, “There has also been a large increase in the number of participants, as well as an increase in the amount awarded to youth each year (over $195,000 in 2019). This would not be possible without our generous Fair sponsors. It’s truly a pleasure to see all of Starr County come together to support and showcase our youth, and it is wonderful to work with such amazing friends and volunteers year after year. As my father used to say, ‘It’s all about the kids!’”

They stated that many improvements have been made in the fairgrounds, as well. They both remember showing at Ft. Ringgold when all of the animals were housed in a tent on the old Dodgers practice field where Xavier used to practice baseball. Many wonderful changes and expansions to the grounds have improved the Fair; the carnival was brought into the grounds for one big event; there is a new office building instead of the former trailer; and we continue to look for new ways to grow and expand. The honorees stated that they are deeply honored to be selected as Parade Marshals. Anyone wishing to enter in the parade may call or text Parade Chairman Tissa Peterson at 956/500-1430 before Saturday, or get in line on Water Street that morning and come to the mailboxes with payment for a windshield registration card.

Painted buntings are amazingly colorful When you describe the colors of the painted bunting to someone who has never seen one, they give you a strange look as though they believe you’re pulling their leg. Even when you stand looking at one you can hardly believe what you’re seeing. Painted buntings are about five inches long and, while we call them buntings, are actually members of the finch family. The male has a blue head and neck, a lime green back, a red rump, throat and belly, blackish

wings and a tail tinged with purple, black feet and bill, and as an accent to all that, a distinct red ring around each of his brown eyes. Wow! The female, in her own less ostentatious way, is also very attractive. She has a throat and belly of yellow and all upper parts, wings and tail, are greenish. She’s about the only bird you can see in the U.S. with such a distinctly green back except for our green jays of course. Painted buntings used to be kept as cage birds and earned the nickname “Mexican canary.” Thankfully, it’s now illegal to

catch one. They’re found in our southeastern states and down through Mexico into northern South America. Here in the Rio Grande Valley they migrate through in the spring and fall but probably aren’t nesting residents. The male has a tinkling call which can be heard from spring through fall. The nest is a compact cup of grass, tiny twigs, and leaves which is lined with fine grass and horse hair. The 3 to 5 eggs are pale blue, spotted and blotched with reddish brown and lavender. A painted bunting’s food consists primarily of weed seeds supplemented by occasional insects such as beetles and grasshoppers. If you have any brushy land nearby, a birdbath

and seed feeder may attract an occasional painted bunting -they’ll certainly attract other birds. I’m privileged to have had some excellent opportunities to observe painted buntings. Once, while walking through a park in Victoria, Texas, I watched, from only a few feet away, as a male enjoyed a leisurely bath in a small pool of rainwater on the path I was hiking. Just recently, to my delight, while I was sitting outside reading, a male bunting visited my birdbath to quench his thirst. Many of you probably have not had such opportunities since these birds tend to stay in thickets and underbrush and away from urban settings. I guarantee that, if you get a good look as a painted bunting,

it will be a moment you’ll always remember. If you’re observant, there are treasures to be seen every time you hike the wilderness trails.

Upon arriving at the Margaret M. Clark Aquatic Center, the Roma Gladiator Team was called in right away for the day’s first event, but they were up to the challenge. After the first event, the students were ready right away to take on the

The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou are with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou prepares a table before me in the presence of my enemies; Thou anointest my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Celebrate National Nutrition Month® by Eating Right, Bite by Bite

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics invites you to celebrate National Nutrition Month® with this year’s theme of Eat Right, Bite by Bite! According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics this year’s theme “not only appeals to kids and kids-at-heart, but “bite by bite” also supports the philosophy that every little bit (or bite!) of nutrition is a step in the right direction. Small goals/changes can have a cumulative healthful effect.” Yolanda Morado, , County Extension Agent Family Community Health, shares that “National Nutrition Month is a great way for us to start our year off right and focus on the importance of making healthy food choices and incorporating physical activity into our routine.” According to ChooseMyPlate. gov, a healthy eating pattern should include a variety of foods including: • Fruits such as oranges, strawberries, apples, pears, grapes • Vegetables such as carrots, onions, green peppers, eggplants, broccoli, tomatoes

• Whole Grains such as oats, brown rice, bread, pasta, popcorn • Dairy such as milk, cheese, yogurt • Protein such as chicken, beef, seafood, eggs, nuts and seeds A well-balanced eating pattern can provide us with a variety of nutrients, such as fiber, potassium, calcium, protein and carbohydrates, that are needed for our body’s day to day activities. Morado explains that “using nutrition tools like ChooseMyPlate.gov can help us personalize our nutrition goals and understand that there is not a “one plan fits all” approach and everyone’s way to “eat right, bite by bite” will look different!” To celebrate National Nutrition Month, Morado recommends trying out these ideas below: • Try New Produce Each Week – Each week or each day, try to incorporate a new fruit or vegetable into your meals. Create a challenge amongst your family members to see who has tried the most variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. • Healthy Family Fun Celebrate with your family by shopping and meal prepping

together or trying new outdoor activities such as hiking or riding bikes! Another great family fitness project is to sign up with the Walk Across Texas 8 week walk program. This is a great way to get the entire family involved and maybe start some healthy family traditions! • Visit Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s Dinner Tonight program - Dinner Tonight offers delicious and budget-friendly recipes that are a great way to begin your journey to eat right, bite by bite, such as our Strawberry Oatmeal Cookie Balls, which highlights fresh strawberries and whole grain oats! To learn more about the recipes, visit https:// dinnertonight.tamu.edu For more information on National Nutrition Month visit EatRight.org or contact your (Starr) County Extension agent at (Yolanda Morado 956-4872306). What is trisomy? Trisomy is a chromosomal condition characterized by an additional chromosome. The online resource Trisomy.org notes that, when three copies of any one of the chromosomes are present, this can lead to congenital malformations and serious developmental and motor delays. High incidence of mortality also is common among children with trisomy. Trisomy 13 and trisomy 18 are two types of the condition. A child diagnosed with

trisomy 13 has three copies of chromosome number 13, while a trisomy 18 diagnosis indicates that a child has a third copy of chromosome number 18. According to the Trisomy 18 Foundation, trisomy 18, a condition sometimes referred to as “Edwards’ syndrome,” disrupts the normal patterns of development in a child, potentially threatening the child’s life, even before birth. When discussing trisomy with their physicians, expecting parents may discover that Down

syndrome also is a chromosomal condition, and one that has a relatively low mortality rate. However, the Trisomy 18 Foundation notes that the developmental issues caused by trisomy 18 are associated with more medical complications that are more potentially lifethreatening than those issues associated with Down syndrome. *** Did you know in 1878 the first telephone book made contained only 50 names

Agencies that participated in the Round 1 Application Period for EFSP Supplemental Funding may apply in the Round 2 Application Period for new eligible costs incurred from January 1, 2019 through January 31, 2020 that were not previously reimbursed in round one. Any nonprofit, faith-based, or government agency may apply for funds, regardless of current or former EFSP participation. The application to apply is available on the EFSP website. More information about the application process, updated guidance for Round 2 funding, and other materials, can be found here. The Supplemental Appropriations for Humanitarian Assistance grant provides funding to the EFSP National Board to disburse to state and local social service organizations to defray their costs in aiding southern border migrants in need of food, shelter, and other supportive services. $25 million has been allocated to reimburse eligible services within Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas and $5 million has been allocated to reimburse eligible services in all states nationwide. This is a competitive grant, so no application is guaranteed an award and only eligible expenses can be reimbursed. The Importance of Updating Operating Systems Anyone who owns a smartphone, tablet, computer, or another smart device is no doubt familiar with system updates. Users are often alerted to system updates on their devices via notifications, which can be easily forgotten if unintentionally ignored. But users who ignore system update notifications may be doing so at their own peril. According to the GetSafeOnline. org, a United Kingdom-based initiative that aims to offer practical advice on online safety, there are many reasons why users should install operating system updates as soon as they’re notified that the updates are available. Regardless

of whether users have Microsoft Windows, Apple or Android devices, installing system updates when they’re available can make users and their data less vulnerable to online criminals. In fact, system updates are sometimes issued in response to malware and other security flaws that online criminals found and exploited in previous versions. System updates are not always issued with security in mind. Updates also can enhance device functionality, making for a more user-friendly and less frustrating experience. Devices that routinely crash or freeze or those that generally

suffer from poor performance may benefit from system updates. In such instances, users can save hundreds of dollars, if not more, on replacement devices by first updating their systems. Devices that respond well to system updates likely don’t need to be replaced. Failing to install system updates can compromise device performance, even when devices haven’t yet started to exhibit symptoms like freezing or crashing. In addition, without the latest security updates, devices continue to be vulnerable to cybercrime attacks like hacking and/or viruses, spyware and malware.

STC named among top-10 ‘Military Friendly’ colleges nationwide LEGAL NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE South Texas College has been named among the top-10 colleges in the nation for serving military and veteran students, according to a renowned Military Friendly Schools survey released on Feb. 17. Solidifying STC’s commitment to creating better outcomes for veterans, the college was awarded Military Friendly’s gold seal and ranked 9th overall as a Military Friendly school for the 2020-2021 school year. The survey is among the longestrunning and most comprehensive review of college and university investments in serving military and veteran students. It is often considered the standard that measures an organization’s commitment, effort, and success

in creating sustainable and meaningful benefit for the military community. “Our office is committed to making sure our veterans and their families have a smooth transition into college and throughout their time at South Texas College,” said Claire Forrester, Coordinator of Veteran Recruitment and Engagement at STC. “We’re honored to receive the gold seal designation because our staff works incredibly hard to assist our veterans from their initial enrollment through graduation.” “From the moment a new student walks into our office they’re assisted by one of our work studies, many of whom are veterans themselves,” Forrester said.

South Texas College and its Office of Student Veteran Affairs are dedicated to serving veterans, active military, reservists, spouses, and dependents in meeting their educational goals. The college as a whole offers a wide variety of resources, support, and advocacy so student veterans succeed in meeting their higher education goals. Working in conjunction with STC’s Student Veterans of America Chapter, numerous programs and services have been installed including peer-to-peer programs, a veteran lending library, “Foxhole” study rooms, labs, and much more. More information about veterans’services can be found here https://www.southtexascollege. edu/veterans/#sva.

Only some red-winged blackbirds migrate I maintain several bird feeders and bird bathes near my home and they at-tract dozens of wild bird species. During the fall and again in the spring my feeders are visited by migrating red-winged blackbirds. A few at a time are fine but large numbers aren’t particularly welcome. They compete with the resident birds for food and in the spring their almost constant trilling calls can become irritating. They’re omnivores whose diet consists mostly of seeds but they also eat lots of insects and some small animals. Berries are also eaten when available. That red-winged blackbirds are commonly seen may be a gross understatement. They’re

thought to be the most abundant bird species in North America. Their population is estimated to be around 250 million and their range includes nearly all of the continent. Migrating flocks sometimes include over a million birds. I should note that their numbers have been declining recently although that’s true for many species. Never-the-less, they’re one of the world’s most successful species. Whatever their numbers, they roost in flocks while migrating. In case you’re one those rare folk who don’t recognize a red-winged blackbird, the males are glossy black with red and yellow shoulder patches. The females are brown, streaked much darker brown, and have a light eyebrow line. Their fall migration south usually runs from September

through October and the journey north in the Spring runs midFebruary to mid-May. In the fall, the females come first but in the spring the males migrate first in order to stake out their preferred breeding territories in northern

marshes. They love nesting on cat-tails. What’s unusual about their migration is that only some of them migrate. Those summering in Canada and our northern tier of States migrate south for the winter. Those in our middle or southern states are residents and don’t migrate. That means that those we see on migration are on an 800 to 1,000 mile or more trip. Maybe they need a refueling break at my bird feeders.
