God’s Garden
God looked around his garden and found an empty place, He then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face. He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, He knew you were in pain, He knew that you would never get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb. So He closed your weary eyelids and whispered, ‘Peace be thine.’ It broke our hearts to lose you but you didn’t go alone, for part of us went with you the day God called you home.
The family of Letty Carrion would like to express our sincere gratitude to our relatives and friends for your kindness and sympathy during the loss of our loved one. Our heartfelt thanks to those who came by her side while she was at the hospital and to those who attended the services. Our appreciation goes out to everyone for your expressions of love through prayers, masses, rosaries, lowers, and food. In our time of sorrow, you have given us much needed strength.

likely than men to say they’re tired or even exhausted. All of that running around certainly can contribute to fatigue, but other factors also can lead to tiredness. Getting to the root of fatigue can help women regain their energy levels. Insufficient sleep: Women tend to multitask and use more of their brains than men, leading to a greater need for sleep, reports the National Sleep Foundation. Even though they may require more hours of shuteye, many women are not getting the proper rest. In order to gain more energy, NSF recommends women get regular exercise, limit their caffeine and alcohol intake, improve their sleeping environments (i.e. a dark, cool room), and establish routine sleep and wake times to promote better chances of sleeping between seven and nine per night. The NSF also notes that women are more likely than men to experience insomnia. Women whose energy levels are dwindling due to sleeplessness should seek assistance from their physicians. Stress: The Women’s Health Network points out that constant stress or adrenal hormone imbalance can rob women of energy, leading to feelings of tiredness all the time. Finding successful methods of relieving stress can help women regain energy. Delegating work or asking for help is one way for women to lighten their workloads. Mindfulness and meditation may help calm overactive thoughts. Exercise also is a healthy way to relieve stress and can promote the release of feel-good endorphins. Anemia: Anemia may be the culprit behind some women’s sagging energy levels. The Mayo Clinic defines anemia as a condition in which the body does not have sufficient healthy red blood cells to carry enough oxygen to bodily tissues. Anemia may be mild or severe, temporary or chronic. Treatment for anemia may be as simple as eating a healthy diet. Supplementation with iron or ironrich foods may be recommended as well. Anemia also can be caused by hidden blood loss. That’s why it’s best to address anemia under the supervision of a doctor. Lack of exercise: Although it may seem like exercise would tire a person out, the opposite is true. WebMD says studies consistently show that people who exercise regularly experience less fatigue than those who do not. The reasons are not completely understood, but it could be due to exercise helping the body to work more efficiently and pumping oxygen-rich blood where it is needed. Exercise can help with sleep issues, anxiety and depression, which also zap energy levels. To boost energy, exercise in the low- to medium-exertion range. Exercises to try include biking, walking, light resistance training, or even yoga. Restoring energy levels can be easier once the source of fatigue is identified.

unfortunately led many experienced teachers with no choice but to leave their dream jobs in pursuit of higher paying opportunities. In addition, the issue of low wages has not only proven to negatively effect current educators, it has shown to be a deterrent for qualified young Texans who would otherwise pursue a career in the field. While the Texas education system suffers a loss of passionate, caring and dedicated employees, it is ultimately our children who are the victims of the present situation. “The allotted funds provided through HB 1371 to full time Texas teachers would serve to incentivize potential educators and above all, act as an investment in our children’s future,” Guillen concluded. Serving ten rural South Texas counties in the Texas House of Representatives, Ryan Guillen is known for his hard work, fierce independence, and relentless efforts for South Texas families. Recently, Capitol Inside called him a “House Bill Machine,” and a “one-person assembly line for legislation.” Since elected, few other legislators have passed more bills than Guillen. The bottom line: Polio, a disease that once terrified Americans, is a vaccine success story. Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a crippling and potentially deadly disease caused by a virus. Even though polio cases are rare, parents need to be vigilant about vaccinating their kids to keep it from returning to the United States. Polio, a disease that once terrified Americans, is a public health success story. Widespread adoption of a vaccine eradicated the crippling disease in the United States in 1979. Polio also nearly has been eliminated worldwide, thanks to that vaccine. Before the polio vaccine became available in 1955, the disease crippled 35,000 Americans every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Polio’s paralysis claimed thousands of people, and thousands of children died. Youngsters had to live in respirators called “iron lungs” to help them breathe, because polio ravaged their muscles. Swimming pools closed
out of fear people could catch the virus there. People avoided crowded movie theatres for the same reason. After people widely took the vaccine, the number of Americans crippled by polio plummeted to fewer than 10, in the 1970s. “I’m old enough to have seen the ravages of polio,” said Austin internist and Texas Medical Association (TMA) Council on Science and Public Health member William M. Tierney, MD. “I had a friend in high school with one leg crippled by polio.” Dr. Tierney’s mother also caught polio in the hospital when she gave birth to his younger brother. “Although she recovered fully, she was hospitalized for a year,” said Dr. Tierney, professor and founding chair of the Department of Population Health at The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School. Dr. Tierney also saw many Kenyans young and old crippled by polio as he cared for patients and conducted research in the African nation. Even though polio cases now are rare, Texas parents need to be vigilant about vaccinating their
kids to keep it from returning, the TMA’s Texas Medicine magazine reports. Polio, the common name for poliomyelitis, attacks muscles, especially in the arms and legs, and those used for breathing. Polio infection feels like the flu, said Dr. Tierney. Symptoms can include sore throat, fever, headache, and nausea. As the body fights polio, the virus can invade the brain and spine to cause paralysis that can be permanent in some people. No cure exists. Because polio is still a problem in some Asian and African countries, people who travel could bring it to the United States again. Until polio is gone everywhere, it can still spread. Two types of polio vaccine exist: inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) and oral polio vaccine (OPV). Only IPV is used in the United States because it is safer and works better. Four shots (given at 2, 4, and 6-18 months, and at 4-6 years) are need to give almost 100 percent protection from polio. “We are on the verge of eradicating polio worldwide – something that has only happened
once before, with smallpox in 1980,” said Dr. Tierney. [Before its eradication, smallpox killed millions of people worldwide.] “The disappearance of polio and smallpox – two scourges that wreaked havoc on mankind – are evidence that vaccination works, and that recommended guidelines for vaccination should be followed by everyone.” This release is part of a monthly TMA series highlighting contagious diseases that childhood and adult vaccinations can prevent. Diseases covered thus far include: Flu, Measles, Pneumococcal disease, Human papillomavirus (HPV), Chickenpox and shingles, Hepatitis A, Pertussis (whooping cough), Rubella (also known as German measles), and Rotavirus. TMA designed the series to inform patients of the facts about these diseases and to help them understand the benefits of vaccinations to prevent illness. Visit the TMA website to see efforts to raise immunization awareness and how funding is used to increase vaccination rates. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
Communities Statewide Invited to Read Across Texas The Texas Center for the Book (TCFB) invites libraries and community non-profits to join in a statewide reading campaign. Read Across Texas - Know Your Neighbor: Cultivating Communities of Compassion kicks off this March, with libraries throughout the state signing up to host reading and discussion programs. The TCFB sponsors Read Across Texas to encourage meaningful discourse. The campaign features four book selections that explore the complex topic of what it means to “know your neighbor” and encourages communities to engage in challenging, insightful and transformative conversations. Each community can choose a title from the recommended list and hold a book discussion on what cultivating compassion can look like within that community. TCFB, which is administered by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, is also making available grants to libraries to help them buy books that can be used in group discussions. Libraries and organizations can access an
online step-by-step facilitator toolkit that includes materials such as a how-to guide, additional recommended titles, digital resources and links to discussion questions. The toolkit along with the program registration form and grant application are available at tsl.texas.gov/readacrosstexas. Activities for Read Across Texas begin in March, but libraries and organizations may conduct programs throughout the spring and summer. Know Your Neighbor: Cultivating Communities of Compassion offers libraries a broad canvas for convening individuals and groups together to explore the unique questions, challenges and solidarity that can occur in communities throughout the state. Established in 1987, the Texas Center for the Book seeks to stimulate public interest in books, reading, literacy and libraries. The Center builds partnerships with library professionals, educators, authors, publishers and booksellers who work to promote a love of literature throughout the Lone Star State.

Standing water is a common sight at many homes. Rainstorms may not last long, but the water they leave behind can still be harmful. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, standing water is a breeding ground for various microorganisms. When those microorganisms become airborne, they can be inhaled by men, women and children, potentially triggering allergic reactions. In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that studies have indicated that female mosquitoes like to lay their eggs in water that collects or is stored in man made containers. If it rains and water covers mosquito eggs, the eggs can hatch and become adults in roughly one week. The CDC advises men and women to protect themselves from mosquitoes by walking their properties once per week, turning over, scrubbing and covering any containers that hold or may hold water.

Heart disease affects women of all ages. The symptoms can be somewhat silent or not what many women may normally associate with heart disease. The symptoms of heart disease in women also may differ from those experienced by men. The Mayo Clinic says the most common heart attack symptom in women is a type of pain or discomfort in the chest. However, women also may experience seemingly unrelated symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, sweating, unusual fatigue, abdominal discomfort, or lightheadedness. Recognizing these symptoms can help women get early treatment that may save their lives.

Starr County Youth Fair Dr. Richard Irizarry Named Starr County Fair Parade Marshal
Dr. Richard Irizarry is being honored as 2019 Parade Marshal by the Starr County Fair Association and will lead the Starr County Fair Parade on Saturday, February 23. The parade will proceed East on Main Street into Fort Ringgold in Rio Grande City at 11:00 a.m. with lineup on South Britton Ave. and Water St. at 9:00 a.m. Dr. Irizarry serves on the Board of Directors of the Starr County Fair Association and is Chairman of the High School Fine Arts Division of the Fair. He has been helping with that division since 2007 when the committee was chaired by Jim Seeden, who followed Mary Rodriguez as chairman. He is currently assisted on the committee by Rosy Lopez. He also has the assistance and support of his wife, Roseann, a retired Special Education teacher. The couple has four daughters, Andrina, Deanna,
Christiane, and Alexandra. They are the proud grandparents of twelve. In 2015, Dr. Irizarry was honored as the Starr County Fair’s Volunteer of the Year because of his dedication to the Fair and to the art division. When asked about changes he has observed in the Fair over the years, Dr. Irizarry, who rarely misses a Fair Board meeting, stated, “I have seen new people becoming engaged in the Fair. I see sincere commitments on the part of the volunteers. The Starr County Fair Association is a great avenue for community service and involvement.” Dr. Irizarry and his family are very active members of First United Methodist Church, where he serves as Chair of the Administrative Council. He also chairs the Starr County Community Coalition and formerly served on the Parks Commission for the city of Rio Grande City. The honoree stated, “My family and I have been in Rio Grande City since 1993 and have enjoyed the experience.” Currently, he serves as Director of the Starr County Campus of the University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley. He served the Rio Grande City CISD as assistant superintendent for thirteen years, then in Kenedy as superintendent for three years, but came back to the Valley. Born in New York City, he has seen a lot of the world and developed a love of art through his many travels and studies. After serving
four years in the Air Force, where he continued his studies with night classes at a Catholic university, Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, Ohio, he met his wife and developed an interest in Latin American art. They lived in Mexico City for a time where he was a student of Pre-columbian art at Universidad Nacional Autόnoma de Mexico. “I was hooked on art,” he stated, and taught art history when they returned to the states, settling in Texas. He earned his PhD in Education at the

University of Texas and lived and worked in Brownsville, Edinburg, then Rio Grande City. His office at UTRGV is decorated with several pieces of pre-Columbian art he has collected over the years. He concluded, “I was shocked when I received this recognition. It is an honor to be selected as Parade Marshal.” Anyone wishing to enter in the parade may call or text Parade Chairman Tissa Peterson at 956/5001430 before Saturday.

in the center called disk flowers. Together, we commonly, and mistakenly, call them all a single flower. They make a bright show which has been compared with a fireworks display. It’s not surprising that the common names are firewheel and Indian blanket. There are hybridized cultivars, commercially available, which are all red or all yellow. Bloom season is primarily summer and fall but given fortunate weather, may be year-round. However, they’re considered annuals or, at best, short lived perennials. Gaillardias grow to a height of a foot or two and may have a diameter of about 18 inches. T h e i r leaves are alternate, three inches long and an inch

I’d like to acquire a couple of cacti but need assistance: There are 23 species of cacti native to Starr County. We have 21 of them growing at Rancho Lomitas where I live. I’d like to add the missing two. If any of you can tell me how I might get them, please let me know. They are: Eagleclaw Cactus (Glandulicactus uncinatus) and Yellow-flowered Alicoche (Echinocereus papillosus). I might need two of each if they can’t be self-pollinated. Even one would be a good start. You can contact me online at jimseeden@gmail.com or by phone at 956-486-2700. Many thanks for any assistance you can provide.

wide. They prefer calcareous and sandy soil with good drainage and, since they’re drought tolerant, can be planted in full sun or partial shade. They have a long tap root so don’t try to transplant them. I’ve ordered one for my garden this year from a commercial grower. A common roadside delight, they may reseed themselves. They attract butterflies and have a long bloom season. More flower gardens should include them.
