NOVENA “Miraculous Prayer”
R. G. C.
Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it, Dear Jesus, and place it within your own heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail.

The Truth about Marijuana A Message from Starr County Youth Coalition,“SCYC-Roma” Marijuana comes from the leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds of cannabis plants and contains the chemical THC. This is the bad guy. THC is a mind-altering chemical that is known to have many negative long-term effects on users. Marijuana affects brain development, so when used by teens, the drug can impair thinking, memory, and prevent or alter connections in the brain. Many studies have also consistently shown that marijuana use during the teen years versus use as an adult leads to a significant loss in cognitive abilities such as verbal ability and general knowledge. As for the physical effects of marijuana use, there are many. Breathing problems, increased heart rate, problems with child development during and after pregnancy, and intense nausea and vomiting are just some. Now that you know the truth, is it really worth it? This information was gathered from the National Institute on Drug Abuse by Starr County Youth Coalition, SCYC-Roma H.S. Club, working towards a drug-free community.

Reading is a passion for many people. But even avid readers may not know just how far back their love of reading stretches. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children who find pleasure in reading have the potential to become lifelong readers. In addition, studies have shown that reading to children can help kids become familiar with sounds, words and language, helping them in their earliest stages of cognitive development. So adults who love books might be able to trace their passion for page-turners to those times their mothers and fathers read aloud to them as youngsters. Parents who want to their children to learn to love reading can rely on various techniques to accomplish that goal. · Make reading a routine. Routine is a necessity for parents, helping children learn when it’s time to eat, play and go to sleep, among other things. Parents can include reading to their children as part of their daily routines. As noted, doing so will promote language skills and cognitive development while also acclimating children to books and providing valuable time for them to bond with their parents. · Create a distraction-free reading environment. When reading to children, parents can create an environment with little to no distractions. This allows kids to focus on their parents’ voices as well as the story they’re being told. Parents can turn off
the television and the radio when reading to their kids. In addition, moms and dads should leave smartphones or tablets in another room so they aren’t distracted by alerts or tempted to check for incoming messages or emails. · Read aloud together. Some children may shy away from reading if they struggle in their initial efforts to read. That does not mean kids won’t ultimately enjoy reading, it just means a little more effort may be required on parents’ part to help kids overcome any issues they have. Reading aloud to children can help little ones learn how to become good readers, as they will learn how to pronounce words and form sentences. Kids who know how to read can be encouraged to read to their parents, which can instill self-esteem. If kids struggle with certain words or sentences when reading aloud, parents can read those words and/ or sentences aloud to them and ask them to repeat the phrases back. · Let kids pick their own books. When reading to youngsters, whether they’re babies, toddlers or already in school, parents can let sons and daughters choose their own books. Children might be especially enthusiastic about reading if they’re allowed to choose their own books and stories. Reading can benefit children from the earliest stages of their lives all the way through adulthood. Parents can take various steps to foster a love of reading in their children.

How to reduce damage to eyes Guillen Works To Grow resulting from prolonged screen time Education & Veteran Funding LEGAL NOTICE
According to a 2015 report published in the Daily Mail, many people spend more time on their devices than they do sleeping. A recent Nielsen Company audience report also found that adults in the United States devote about 10 hours and 40 minutes each day to consuming media on their personal computers, tablets, multimedia devices, TVs, and more. Researchers continue to study the effects of screen time on personal health, but there is reason to believe that screen time may be especially harmful to vision. Devices force the eyes to focus at near range, and over time that can have an adverse effect on vision. Prevent Blindness America says that eye fatigue, dryness and blurred vision are some of the common effects of prolonged screen use, but these are not the only concerns. Digital devices also expose the eyes to blue light. While research as to how blue light impacts vision is ongoing, there is concern over the long-term effects of screen exposure since these screens are in close proximity to the eyes and use is often prolonged. Prevent Blindness America says that studies suggest continued exposure to blue light over time can lead to difficulty focusing, premature aging of the eyes and even damage to retinal cells. A recent study by the National Eye Institute found the frequency of myopia, also known as nearsightedness, has increased exponentially in the last few years. Reasons include a spike
in time spent looking at things close-up and a lack of outdoor activities that require focusing elsewhere. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that a separate study recently found that excessive screen time usage in adolescents was associated with development of acute onset esotropia, or crossing of the eyes, and that limiting usage of gadgets decreased the degree of eye crossing in these patients. Eyes, just like any other muscle, require a varied workout to remain healthy. Many vision experts recommend the 20-20-20 rule. According to this rule, for every 20 minutes of looking at a screen, a person should look away at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds or more. This will help eye muscles to relax. The group All About Vision says to use proper lighting, such as ambient lighting. Position a computer monitor so that windows or lights are to the sides instead of in front or behind it. Be sure indoor light isn’t too bright, as bright light can contribute to glare and fatigue. Antireflective lenses on eyeglasses or filters for screens also can help absorb some of the blue light and limit how much reaches the retina and accesses the central nerve of the eye. This may alleviate digital eye strain as well. Screen users may want to adjust the display of their devices so they feature a cool, gray tone, which produces less glare. Eyes can be adversely affected by screen time unless strategies are implemented to limit strain and to rest muscles.
S t a t e Rep. Ryan Guillen (D-Rural S o u t h Te x a s ) filed a bill last week that allows the Texas Lottery Commission to contract with third parties to advertise and market the Lottery, and sell advertisement space on lottery tickets. Rep. Guillen says the bill will allow the Commission to increase its revenue, a portion of which is funneled into Texas public education. “The Lottery Commission provides over a billion dollars to the Texas Foundation Fund every year,” said Guillen. “Allowing the Commission to advertise through other companies and sell advertising space on its tickets will cut operating costs, increase awareness and sales, and ultimately its revenue. And in the end, the revenue goes back to Texas schools.” Last year, the Texas Lottery Commission achieved $5.627 billion in sales, providing $1.432 billion to the Texas Foundation School Fund, and $18.1 million to the Fund for Veterans’ Assistance. Since 1997, the Commission has contributed $22 billion to Texas public education and more than $100 million to Texas veterans. Given the amount of contribution Texas Lottery makes, Rep. Guillen’s HB 1790 seeks to further increase its revenue, and thus, its contribution to education

and veterans. “What we need is efficiency in the way the Lottery Commission runs,” added Guillen. “The more efficient it is, the more money we save. And that means more money to education and our veterans.”

Starr County Sheriff’s Office SRT Team Scenario Training Exercise Mexican milk snakes are strikingly beautiful and beneficial Starr County Sheriff’s Office and AMC Star Plex Theatre forged a partnership with public safety in mind. Through corporate and administrative agreements between these two entities, the sheriff’s office special response team (SRT) conducted a training on Monday 18th, 2019 at the AMC Theatre in Rio Grande City, Texas. How could a Mexican milk snake be more stunningly attractive? It’s body is a series of wide, bright bands of yellow (or almost white), black and red. However, that happens to be both their beauty and a problem. The deadly, venomous coral snake also has bands of yellow, red and black. However, NOTE PLEASE, the coral snake’s yellow and red bands are next to each other. The milk snake’s y e l l o w and red bands are separated by the b l a c k bands! The coral snake is also a much thinner snake. The Mexican milk snake is NOT venomous but is

sometimes feared due to mistaken identification. The name “milk snake” comes from the myth that they sucked milk from the udders of dairy cows. They were often found in dairy barns and it was thought that milk was their only food source. Actually, of course, they were there because of the abundance of mice in barns. A milk snake’s diet consists of lizards, insects, other small snakes and small rodents. They’re constrictors and larger prey are killed by coiling around it and squeezing so it can’t breathe. They’re about 2 to 2 1/2 feet long. Mexican milk snakes are one of four subspecies found in Texas and it inhabits the Tamaulipan thorn scrub which covers southern Texas down into Mexico. Only 3 to 5% of the original Tamaulipan habitat remains so the snakes are seldom seen. They also tend to be nocturnal and avoid any activity on hot days which also

contributes to their apparent scarcity. Active from April to November, they lay a clutch of 4 to 12 eggs in the spring. The 9 to 10 inch hatchlings typically live for 10 years or more and, except for mating, live solitary lives. There are people who keep snakes as pets. If I wanted a pet snake, a Mexican milk snake would be it. They’re surprisingly docile, only biting if roughly handled and seldom excreting musk. They adapt to being caged and can survive on a diet of mice. There are internet sites offering them for sale and providing instructions for their care. They’re nonvenomous and beautiful! However, I’m happy with my dog, and constant companion, Pal. I’d like to acquire a couple of cacti but need assistance: There are 23 species of cacti native to Starr County. We have 21 of them growing at Rancho Lomitas where I live. I’d like to add the missing two. If any of you can tell me how I might get them, please let me know. They are: Eagleclaw Cactus (Glandulicactus uncinatus) and Yellow-flowered Alicoche (Echinocereus papillosus). I might need two of each if they can’t be self-pollinated. Even one would be a good start. You can contact me online at jimseeden@gmail.com or by phone at 956-486-2700. Many thanks for any assistance you can provide.
