Daniel “Danny” Vasquez

August

Danny Vasquez entered into eternal rest on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at Starr County Memorial Hospital, with his family by his side. Danny’s 73 years of life was full of love, compassion, and family.

Danny was born on August 4, 1951 to Manuela and David Vasquez in Santa Rosa, Texas. Danny had 11 brothers and sisters. Danny is survived by his wife, Noelia (Barrera) Vasquez, of 44 years. Danny had 4 children: Robbie Vasquez (Denise), Elias Vasquez (Marta), Oscar David Vasquez (†), Jennifer Vasquez- Gonzalez (Alex). He was also blessed with eight grandchildren Aaron, Daniel, Riley, Edgar, Sophia, Oscar, Katia and Addison. He is also survived by his brothers, David and Lupe (Clarissa), and sisters Eva (Jerry †) and Leonor (George). Danny now joins his late parents, brothers, and his beloved son, Oscar, in eternal rest.

Danny spent his youth involved in many different sports and activities. Many remember him as a strong athlete and an academic whiz. His athletic ability and academic

achievements gained him a scholarship to play football for Rice University. Danny later transferred to Texas A&I University to continue his football career where he was an Academic All-American. After graduating from Texas A&I, Danny worked at school districts across the valley, finally settling in Rio Grande City.

Danny dedicated his life to serving students and athletes, holding various roles as a teacher, coach and administrator. He loved coaching his children and grandchildren, and you could always catch him at a track meet or a game. Danny was a familiar face at the Texas track meets and he officiated at the state track meet every year with his brothers. If he was not at a sports event, you would find him solving a crossword puzzle, playing dominos or enjoying a game of chess. For Danny, Sundays were for family and football. He loved his Cowboys.

Danny had a profound love for his family and will be remembered as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.

The Broken Chain

We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone for part of us went with you, the day that God called you home. You left us beautiful memories, your love is still our guide, and though we cannot see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same; but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.

Your Words Have Comforted Us, Your Support Has Strengthened Us, And Your Love Has Sustained Us.

On behalf of the Vasquez Family, we extend our sincere gratitude for the kindness and comfort we received during our greatest sadness. We are grateful for the many stories and memories that were shared with us, the flowers that were sent, memorial donations, and food. We especially extend our gratitude to the countless medical staff, community, Immaculate Conception Church, family, and friends for your unwavering support through these difficult times.

Thank you,

The Vasquez Family

Homeowners know that owning a home provides a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Home ownership also can increase the chances individuals view their homes as a sanctuary where they can relax and enjoy creature comforts they’ve personally chosen.

The comfort people feel inside their homes can be compromised when they begin to suspect certain safety issues, including electrical problems. The Electrical Safety Foundation estimates that home electrical fires account for roughly 51,000 fires and 500 deaths each

Warning signs of electrical problems

year. Electrical problems will not always cause home fires, but it’s still wise for homeowners to learn the potential warning signs that something is amiss with their home electrical systems.

· Flickering lights: Flickering lights are more than a mere nuisance. Bulbs sometimes flicker because they become loose, which can be remedied by turning the fixture off, waiting for the bulb to cool down to the touch and then tightening it. However, if the bulb was already tight when it was flickering, then the ESFI warns this could be a

sign of an overloaded circuit. The tech experts at CNET advise homeowners to contact a certified electrician if they suspect their home electrical circuit is overloaded.

· Frequently tripped circuits: In a day and age when people rely so heavily on electronic devices like routers, desktop computers, tablets, smartphones, and more, a tripped circuit that cuts power to a home can be a major nuisance. But frequently tripped circuits indicate the presence of an electrical problem that’s greater than a suddenly shut down

computer or disconnected router. Tripping is actually a safety net that shuts down the electrical current of a home in order to let homeowners know something is wrong with their electrical system. Frequently tripped circuits should be brought to the attention of a licensed electrician, who can identify what’s causing the system to alert homeowners something is amiss.

· Warm or discolored wall plates: It may not be common practice to touch wall plates, but the ESFI notes this can be a good way to determine if a home is having electrical issues. Discoloration on the wall plates should be enough to draw homeowners’ attention. Some wall plates may even appear to be melting. Each of these issues could be a byproduct of various

problems, including damaged wiring. A certified electrician can determine what’s behind warm and/or discolored wall plates.

· Burning odor emanating from outlets: The unpleasantness of this warning sign of electrical problems is enough to compel an immediate investigation.

Homeowners who detect a burning odor in their homes but aren’t sure where it’s coming from are urged to inspect their wall outlets. If the odor seems to be coming from an outlet, it could be due to various factors, including exposed wiring, poorly installed wiring, damaged wiring, or a foreign object in the outlet. Contact an electrician immediately if you detect a burning odor coming from an outlet.

Electrical issues in a home

pose a serious safety risk.

Homeowners should learn the warning signs of such issues and report their presence to a licensed electrician immediately.

Watch out for overloaded outlets to protect your home.

•Do not use extension cords or multi-outlet converters for appliances.

•Only plug one heat-producing appliance into an outlet at a time.

•Hot outlets should be checked by qualified electricians.

•Remember that power strips only add outlets—they do not change the amount of power the outlet receives.

•Smart plugs can be used to monitor outlet power loads and even shut off appliances should an outlet begin to overheat.

The Rio Grande City Grulla ISD and Revive Fort Ringgold, in collaboration with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley will host “War & Peace on the Rio Grande, 1961-1867,” an exhibit that reveals activities, battles, and key characters that played and important role in US Civil War history along the natural and international border between the US and Mexico.

The traveling museum exhibit stands at the Rio Grande City Grulla ISD Multipurpose Complex. It features historical characters, events, life-size mannequins, and artifacts from the period, will be on display beginning February 9, 2025 and will stand through the end of May 2025. There will be a community reception on Thursday, February 6, 2025 at 5pm with guest speakers to talk about the inspiration for the creation of this exhibit.

The exhibit covers several aspects of Civil War history along the 200-mile trail between Laredo and Brownsville along the Rio Grande in South Texas. These themes include US Colored Troops, economic trade of the region, military battles

and skirmishes, and Tejanos who served on both the Union and Confederate sides of the war. The exhibit allows the visitors to walk through time and experience where these historic events took place. The exhibit was designed, developed, and produced by the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s CHAPS (Community Historical Archaeology Project with Schools) Program in Edinburg. Visitors can engage with South Texas history and learn just how interesting, intriguing, and historically significant this subject is.

There are also two, short 9-minute films that accompany the exhibit at well. “Cotton

Times” is a film which discusses the economic trade importance of this ‘white gold’ in funding the Confederacy throughout the entire US Civil War and “A Letter From Roma” highlights US Colored Troops who were stationed in Starr County and their experience protecting the border and rebuilding forts along the Rio Grande after the war was over.

There is a tremendous amount of history just waiting to be uncovered with this exhibit.

The importance of wellness exams after 50

Seniors are a growing and increasingly prosperous demographic. As the senior population increases, a greater emphasis must be placed on keeping aging individuals healthy. Wellness checks are important at any age, but they bear even more significance as individuals grow older.

Age brings with it many things, including experience and wisdom. But age also brings an increased risk for health problems. Aging men and women are vulnerable to chronic conditions like heart disease, COPD, cancer, and arthritis. It’s noteworthy that many chronic health conditions fail to produce any symptoms until they have progressed to a point where treatment is difficult.

Annual wellness exams can help older adults take charge of their health and stay as healthy as possible. It’s possible for a person to preserve his or her health (and possibly life) through check-ups and easy tests. Here are some common screenings and health recommendations that come up in the prime of one’s life.

· Colorectal cancer screening: A colon cancer screening is recommended for everyone

at age 45. Colon cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, and risk increases at age 45. Although people seldom look forward to a colonoscopy and the required prep, putting off this test due to a little discomfort may result in missing colon cancer at its earliest stage when it is most treatable.

· Cholesterol screening: This simple blood test can help evaluate the risk for heart disease. High cholesterol can contribute to the buildup of plaque in the arteries, making them narrower and less flexible, according to Sharecare, Inc.

· Mammogram: Most health organizations recommend annual mammogram screenings from age 40 until menopause. Then it may be possible to have a mammogram every other year for those who are at average risk. It is important for women to discuss mammogram frequency with their doctors, particularly if there is a family history of breast cancer.

· Diabetes: ChenMed says diabetes may be more common in older adults, so regular screenings for this illness can enable early

diagnosis and management.

· Testicular cancer screening: This test generally is not recommended without symptoms. Some organizations suggest men with a family history or other risk factors consider performing selfexaminations.

· Vaccination needs: Doctors can alert patients to recommended vaccinations during wellness exams. Seniors should receive an annual flu shot and updated COVID-19 vaccination as available. Pneumococcal vaccine can protect against pneumococcal disease that can lead to pneumonia, meningitis and bloodstream infections. Adults over 50 also should receive a vaccination for shingles, which can occur in older age in those who have previously experienced chickenpox.

There are additional advantages to routine health checkups. Doctors can inquire about fitness routines, stress, sleep, and diet to see if patients are within the guidelines for healthy living.

Older age may make a person wiser, but the risk for various health issues and certain diseases increases with age. Routine health check-ups can keep doctors and patients on the same page.
