By: Lt. Col. Luis Barrera, Senior Army Instructor for the Roma High School Army JROTC Program Congratulations to the Roma High School JROTC Program Gladiator Battalion, which earned a 98.5 score during the JROTC Program Accreditation Inspection (JPA) in December – this is the highest score the Gladiator Battalion has earned since its inception! This inspection covered 4 areas due to the current pandemic. The Drill and Color Guard were waived this school year for all schools. The inspection was one of the first to use a virtual system. A team of Evaluators consisting of members of the ROTC 5th Brigade covered four areas to include: two in-depth
briefings, a review of the Battalion Continuous Improvement Program (BCIP), and Service Learning Briefing (SLB), Depth of Knowledge (DOK) of the JROTC curriculum with Cadet Portfolio Reviews, and Instructor Portfolio Review. First, the Battalion Continuous Improvement Briefing was an indepth analysis of how to improve recruitment and retention among cadets at Roma High. The RHS cadets started their planning, research and analysis of the data in Sept. 2020. The results of the survey identified several issues that could be addressed to improve retention including class requirements, wear of the uniform, other extracurricular
activities and other reasons. The Gladiator Battalion Commander, Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Yahir Flores and the Battalion Executive Officer, Cadet Major Jade Mares, worked with key members of the staff to develop three components to get the Battalion on their pathway to success. They developed a detailed Recruitment and Retention Plan in order to motivate current and future cadets to stay in the program. This plan will be implemented as soon as the JROTC returns to school. The second briefing was the Service Learning Project (SLP) presentation. This year, the Gladiator Battalion, due to the pandemic, used their serviceJROTC, page 6
