By: Lt. Col. Luis Barrera, Senior Army Instructor for the Roma High School Army JROTC Program Congratulations to the Roma High School JROTC Program Gladiator Battalion, which earned a 98.5 score during the JROTC Program Accreditation Inspection (JPA) in December – this is the highest score the Gladiator Battalion has earned since its inception! This inspection covered 4 areas due to the current pandemic. The Drill and Color Guard were waived this school year for all schools. The inspection was one of the first to use a virtual system. A team of Evaluators consisting of members of the ROTC 5th Brigade covered four areas to include: two in-depth

briefings, a review of the Battalion Continuous Improvement Program (BCIP), and Service Learning Briefing (SLB), Depth of Knowledge (DOK) of the JROTC curriculum with Cadet Portfolio Reviews, and Instructor Portfolio Review. First, the Battalion Continuous Improvement Briefing was an indepth analysis of how to improve recruitment and retention among cadets at Roma High. The RHS cadets started their planning, research and analysis of the data in Sept. 2020. The results of the survey identified several issues that could be addressed to improve retention including class requirements, wear of the uniform, other extracurricular

activities and other reasons. The Gladiator Battalion Commander, Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Yahir Flores and the Battalion Executive Officer, Cadet Major Jade Mares, worked with key members of the staff to develop three components to get the Battalion on their pathway to success. They developed a detailed Recruitment and Retention Plan in order to motivate current and future cadets to stay in the program. This plan will be implemented as soon as the JROTC returns to school. The second briefing was the Service Learning Project (SLP) presentation. This year, the Gladiator Battalion, due to the pandemic, used their serviceJROTC, page 6

NOVENA “Miraculous Prayer” Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it, Dear Jesus, and place it within your own heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail.

Today’s the anniversary of the day we lost you and for a time it felt as though our life’s had ended. But loss has taught us many things. And now we face each day with hope and happy memories to help us on our way. And though we are full of sadness that you are no longer here your inluence still guides us and we still feel that your here. What we shared will never die it lives within our hearts bringing strength and comfort while we are apart.

Indigo buntings are sometimes blue, sometimes brown

I watched a brown, sparrowlike bird at my birdbath. It seemed a bit different. Then I noticed that the tail was bluish. It wasn’t a sparrow; it was an indigo bunting. We’re at the western and southern tip of their summer breeding range and most often get to see them when they’re migrating. The bird was a female. They’re all brown except perhaps for a hint of blue in the wings, rump or tail, as I saw in the one at my birdbath. The wings show one or two faint wing-bars; the throat is rather light; the lower mandible (bill) is also lighter. Close examination may also show a faint

streaking on the breast. It’s a very different situation with the male indigo bunting. They’re bright blue during the summer. The flight feathers of the wing may be muted but, in breeding plumage, he’s a sight to see. Immature males and those going through seasonal molts will be in brown colors tinged with blue when they migrate south for the winter. It’s interesting that, as with other blue birds, indigos have NO blue pigment. The feathers are brownish-black. The blue we see is a result of refraction and reflection of light by minute structures on the feathers. It’s similar to the reason the sky is blue or peacocks are so colorful. Males love to sing and do so throughout the day all summer

while perched on a high spot in their territory. The songs are learned and therefore differ a bit from community to community. The females do most of the work. They build the nests, incubate the eggs and feed the young. Indigo buntings eat mostly insects during the summer but also consume seeds, berries and buds. Their preferred habitat is edges between wooded and grassy areas. They like shrubby, weedy fields near trees. On winter, they migrate in flocks to Central and South America. Research has shown that they migrate at night using the stars for navigation. One banded indigo bunting was recaptured 13 years later so they can live a long time.

JROTC Continued from Front Page learning project from October 2018 to formulate the brief. At that time RHS Cadets went to the Alfredo Gonzalez Jr. Texas Veterans Nursing Home to mingle and assist the residents with playing an afternoon bingo. Following the visit, each cadet wrote down what they got learned from the project, and presented to the evaluators. During the reflection, the raw feelings came out of the cadets, and it was a very emotional part of the project. “This project was so awesome to help those who paid for our freedom, it was a unique project for our school, cadets, and community,” said Senior Facilitators, Cadet 1LT Aracely Garcia. “Working with the Veterans is my highest honor to give back to these real heroes,” said Cadet 2LT Jacky Rosa. “It wasn’t what I expected, many of the Veterans in the home suffered from

PTSD and traumatic brain injuries. We always think of soldiers who have physical injuries, but that wasn’t the case this day. We were just so honored to be part of their healing and we appreciate all of their sacrifices,” said Cadet 2LT Vanessa Anaya. Third, JROTC publishes a Master Training Calendar where over 180 JROTC classes are projected to be taught by the JROTC School Instructors. To validate that the cadets are getting the required classes, the inspectors look closely at the Cadet’s Portfolio, where they have to not only provide what they have learned throughout the year, but the Depth of Knowledge each cadet has about that subject. An example of this would be to explain what the cadet’s SMART Goal is for the school year is, but that involves several classes just to satisfy that one requirement. In this

evaluation, the Inspectors select four cadets in all year groups and asked them specific questions, and to show the written assessment, notes, and their learning logs. RHS students excelled in the demonstration of their knowledge. Forth, the JROTC instructors had to share their portfolios with all their professional documents. This is an extensive part of the inspection, ranging from their most recent DA Photo, to instructional strategies used in the classroom, encompassing over 40 areas that are inspected. The Gladiator Battalion did exceptionally well in all areas, scoring the highest in the short history of the program, with a 98.50 percent, securing the topranking and keeping the Honor Unit with Distinction (HUD). Great work, Gladiator Cadets!!

The Many Ways Walking Benefits Your Body Did you know? Life changed dramatically in 2020. When the World Health Organization declared a COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, hundreds of millions of people across the globe were forced to change how they go about their daily lives, including how they exercise. Adults accustomed to exercising at local gyms had to find new ways to exercise in the wake of the pandemic. Resilient men and women soon found ways to exercise, and many of them embraced walking. Though walking might not provide the same level of intensity that fitness enthusiasts are accustomed to, the Arthritis Foundation® notes the various ways walking benefits the body. ·Walking protects against heart disease and stroke. Walking strengthens the heart and protects it against heart disease. The AF also notes that walking lowers blood

pressure. In fact, post-menopausal women who walk just one to two miles per day can lower their blood pressure by nearly 11 points in 24 weeks, while women who walk for 30 minutes a day can reduce their risk of stroke by 20 percent. ·Walking strengthens the bones. New York-based Plancher Orthopedics and Sports Medicine notes that walking can stop the loss of bone mass for people with osteoporosis. In addition, post-menopausal women who incorporate 30 minutes of walking into their daily fitness regimens can reduce their risk of hip fractures by 40 percent. ·Walking can extend your life. The AF notes that one study linked walking to longer life expectancy, finding that people who exercise regularly in their fifties and sixties were 35 percent less likely to die over the next eight years than people who never walked.

·Walking can improve mood. One study from researchers at California State University, Long Beach, found that the more steps people taking during the day, the better their moods were. ·Walking can lower risk for cognitive decline. Walking also has been linked to a lower risk for agerelated cognitive decline. A study from the University of Virginia Health System found that men between the ages of 71 and 93 who walked more than a quarter of a mile per day had half the incidence of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease compared to men who walked less. In addition, a study from researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, found that age-related memory decline was lower among women ages 65 and older who walked 2.5 miles per day than it was among women who walked less than half a mile per week.

Small business owners no doubt recognize the value of repeat customers, but few may recognize just how valuable such customers can be to their bottom lines. A study from researchers at Harvard Business School found that a customer’s eighth purchase was an average of 80 percent higher than his or her first purchase. In addition, a survey from the strategic planning, marketing and sales consultants Altfeld, Inc. found that the probability of selling to an existing customer is between 60 and 70 percent, while that probability shrinks to as low as 5 percent for new customers. Customer retention strategies like offering superior customer service and seeking input from customers can help small businesses generate more repeat customers, which can greatly improve their chances for longterm success.
