Sorority Sisters Celebrate

Members of Texas Delta

Theta Master, a chapter of Beta Sigma Phi International, recently celebrated the holiday season with a party and gift exchange at Jesse’s Enchanted Place.

They had much to celebrate—a three star ranking with the BSP Yardstick for 2023-24, two successful service projects in the fall, and the upcoming Sweetheart

Ball with the other Starr County Chapters of BSP. The theme for 2024-25 is “Beta Sigma Phi, the Right Place to Be,” and the sisters agreed with this theme as they closed out 2024 and look forward to 2025.

Pictured l-r are Rosie Garcia, Elda Hinojosa, Nelda Laurel, President Diana Pena, Vangie Anderson, and Tissa Peterson.

Members of Scouting America Troop 93 visited the McDonald Observatory in West Texas

Members of Scouting America Troop 93 sponsored by Knights of Columbus Council #2597 recently returned from a trip to McDonald Observatory in West Texas. While there, they earned their polar bear award for subfreezing temperatures, then learned about solar dynamics and star

composition at one of the world’s largest telescopes. They also learned about the night sky, how to navigate at night by the stars, and various constellations all while cooking their own meals and sleeping in tents they pitched themselves. They also performed a conservation service project

there at Davis Mountains State Park.

Just a week prior, 9 scouts from Troop 93 earned nearly 50 Merit badges while participating at the annual Winter Camp hosted by the Rio Grande Council at Texas’ longest continually running Scout camp - Camp Perry. They learned and mastered activities like first aid, nature and bird study, camping, rifle shooting, archery, shotgun shooting, cooking, pioneering, home repairs, public

speaking, communications, various citizenship activities, and even salesmanship. If you or your family is interested in joining or helping with your local scout unit, go to beascout. org and follow the prompts for more details. Recruiters will be coming to schools in the next month for youth aged 5-11 for the Cub Scouting program. Scouts are made up of youth from ages 11-18. Explorers and Venturing crews are ages 15-21.

Awesome job Ringgold Middle School teams!

Lydia Garza Saenz

Lydia Garza Saenz entered into eternal rest on Friday, December 6, 2024, at Mission Regional Hospital with her daughters Aissa and Linda by her side. How do you write a description of someone so legendary, so grand, that they were grander than life itself? Lydia Garza Saenz and her 87 years of life were full of love, adventure, trailblazing, and love of Rio Grande City. Lydia was born on February 10, 1937, to Martin P Garza and Teodora Carrera. She is lovingly survived by two daughters Aissa L Diaz of Rio Grande City and Linda Molina of San Antonio, two grandchildren Anaissa Georgette Diaz of Rio Grande City and Miller Maximilliano Molina of San Antonio, two sons-in-law George Diaz of New Braunfels and Tim Molina of Dallas and a brother Marco Garza of Rio Grande City. She was preceded in death by her parents Martin P Garza and Teodora Carrera, brother Martin Garza Jr, sister Linda Diana Garza, husband Blas Pedro Saenz, and children Marisela Garza Carbajal and Francisco Garza Jr.

Lydia was a graduate of Pan American College and often spoke of her adventures traveling every day from Rio Grande City to Edinburg to pursue an education. She is well known for encouraging students to get as much education as possible and throughout her life gave many scholarships

in her community. She always believed that everyone has the potential to succeed if they had encouragement, so she spent a great deal of time with the youth in her community. She lived her life with the belief that community service was her responsibility and her mission. She would talk to everyone who came across her path because she truly believed that everyone was worth knowing.

She was a proud member of the Florence J Scott Women’s Club and devoted much of her time to working on various projects to help her beloved community.

She grew up in her parents’ store “La Tienda de Teodora” where she developed her love of fabrics and business. She loved going to the market in Dallas to look for merchandise for her parents’ store and always looked forward to those trips. She also loved clothes and wore them well, so much so that she captured the eye of Max Kerr, a photographer. She spent many of her Pan American College years posing for Max and together they won many photo contests.

Lydia spent all of her life in the business world, from helping in her parents’ store, to opening the first Chevrolet Dealership in Rio Grande City (Rio Motors), and Garza Insurance Agency, which has been open for over fifty years and continues to be an anchor business in the town. Ever the entrepreneur, she always had an eye out for new projects. Her success comes from her parents who taught her to treat people with respect and to never let a customer leave without buying something.

Above all Lydia loved her family very much and did everything she could for them. At an early age, she was taught to take care of family and she did that to the very end. She lived a fascinating life because of her unwillingness to give up. If something didn’t work, she would just try it another way until she found a way to get it done. Giving up was never an option for her, all she knew was, “I will find a way.”

She was a beautiful mom, she was a butterfly, a fighter, a champion, a believer. She is everything we all hope to be. Her grandson, Miller, called her Sparkly Granny. Even while she was solving larger, complex problems, and taking on challenges and adventures, she always needed glitter makeup, nail polish, or jewelry, anything to shine. She raised us by setting the example –and she still does. Her family vows to carry on her legacy, and to shine while we do.

2nd Anniversary In Loving Memory

October 31, 1964 † January 12, 2023

We thought of you with love today but that is nothing new. We thought about you yesterday and days before that too. We think of you in silence. We often speak your name. All we have are memories and your picture in a frame. Your memory is our keepsake with which we’ll never part. God has you in his keeping, We have you in our heart.

With Love, your husband Raymond, Children: Raymond Jr., Justinrey, Heather Nicole and Lydia Alicia

Card of Thanks

In loving Memory of Lydia Garza Saenz

February 10, 1937 † December 6, 2024

Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. Where there is sadness, joy. Oh Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; for it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

And in your final words to me, “You and I wi always have a bond”.

And in my last words to you, “You have done every ing you could do for us; I wi take it from here”.

Rest in peace mom, you now have a front row seat to EVERYTHING!!

We would like to thank our relatives, friends, neighbors and the community of Rio Grande City for the beautiful flowers, plants, cards phone calls, comforting words of encouragement, wonderful stories you shared and especially your presence during the difficult hours of our deepest sorrow.

The 7A squad went 1-1 with a win over RBMS and a tough game against Zapata. Meanwhile, the 8A team shined with two victories against RBMS and Zapata! Way to go, Rattlers!
