Earth Science CAMP Inspires Roma ISD Students To Become Environmental Advocates Written by: Frida Ibarra, College 1st Program During the fall semester, Roma Independent School District worked in partnership with the College 1st Program to develop an initiative to implement an Earth Science Camp to bring student awareness to the challenges that the environment is facing. Students received information on different fields of natural science, such as geology, meteorology, oceanography, and astronomy. Additionally, the students also reviewed different natural disasters and their causes, as well as the different ecosystems on our planet, and the effects of climate change. With this newfound knowledge, students were encouraged to use their critical thinking skills to create innovative solutions for the betterment of our planet. Some students chose to address natural disasters, such as hurricanes and
earthquakes, with inventions designed to assist the general population. Others directed their inventive spirit toward tackling environmental issues like pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. The students were motivated to create the solutions that they wanted to see in the future. “I think this is a great opportunity for kids to learn about science, especially about how to save our planet and how we can make a difference in our planet,” said Roma ISD student Gilberto Maldonado. Students learned renewable resources like solar, wind, and water power that help produce energy in a clean way. Students learned about hydropower as a method of sustainable energy production. With the provided materials, students engaged their creativity, assembling cars powered by water. They collaborated in teams to design the swiftest rocket car models, utilizing
water and air pressure to propel them forward. These vehicles underwent rigorous testing as students competed for the first-place title. “I learned about how you can use water for a lot of things, and I learned about global warming, and I learned about how to help my planet,” said student Pedro Serna. In the end, while students were faced with the challenges our planet faces today, they also left with the motivation to be a part of the solution to those challenges. They were even provided with a list of careers that encouraged their passion for saving the earth. “My day was really fun and really exciting. I learned about exciting things about the Earth and how the climate changes. I would love to explore college and different careers,” said Itzel Garcia. “Thank you, Roma ISD for guiding me in the right direction.”

All other pageant participants are encouraged to enter their own vehicles. Schools, day care centers, and businesses are encouraged to enter the annual Starr County Fair Parade. It is a Western parade, and all entries should be appropriate for youth. Preregistration is only required by floats wishing to be judged. All other entries may register on-site at the end of South Britton Avenue, beginning at 8:00 a.m. The fee of $30 per entry may be paid and a windshield card for each vehicle obtained from Parade Chairman Tissa Peterson at the FedEx mailbox on South Britton Avenue next to the Drive-In Bank after the vehicle is in line. Park your vehicle, then send a representative. Those paying in advance online will also need to come for their windshield card once they are parked. Floats will be judged on theme, creativity, and workmanship. The theme and the name of the sponsoring organization should be clearly displayed on the float. There will be rosette ribbons and money prizes for the top floats. Marching groups, including bands, are encouraged to participate free of charge. For more information, call Tissa Peterson at 956500-1430, text preferred, or by email at tissapete@ aol.com or call Claudia at 956-488-0122 during business hours. The parade will once again proceed east on Main Street to historic Fort Ringgold. The City of Rio Grande City and TXDOT are asking that no vehicles park on Main Street along the parade route so that emergency vehicles may come through if necessary. Parking is on the side streets and parallel streets north and south of Main. The city of Rio Grande City asks that prizes and candy not be thrown from vehicles. If anything is to be distributed, it should be done by persons walking, so children are not tempted to approach vehicles. With floats and vehicles lining up on Water Street, walking groups will line up on the median of South Britton. Only bands, JROTC, and horses will line up on Britton Avenue north of Main Street. Walkers should be dropped off at the parking lot on Second Street (Hwy.83West) north
of the PNC Bank building and be escorted to S. Britton.
