Dear friends: After much thought, encouragement, and with my family’s blessing, I proudly filed my candidacy for Starr County Democratic Party Chair. I am not a politician but rather a public healthcare servant. For the past 20 years, I have worked hard as a counselor, therapist, psychologist, served on various Boards & with the Order of the Alhambra. I intend to approach the Democratic Chair position in the same way--community service. Children & families have a

special place in my heart & my only hope is to advocate for Starr County and to promote it in a positive manner. I want to contribute to a community we

can all be proud of. This position is a huge responsibility without compensation, but it is time to work together for the greater good, and I am willing to do that. I will continue to listen to your needs, be fair, & serve everyone equally. Politics should not be a method to divide our community but rather to work towards solutions. I welcome your suggestions and appreciate your help to keep Starr County’s voice at the local, State, and National level strong. Together, we will be heard. I humbly ask for your vote in March 2022. Yours in public service, Dr. Jessica Vera-Rios

Rio Grande City placed official signage north of the St. Ive’s Realty development, alongside FM 755, where the City’s new Public Safety building will erect. The City has budgeted $6.1 million for the contemporary two-story project. The blueprints for the approximate 29,000 sq. ft. of construction include plans for housing the Rio Grande City Police Department, Fire Department, along with a few other additions. Furthermore, the price per square foot is set at $265.00, according to the office of the Warren Group Architects, Inc. Laura Warren, lead architect with

TWG Architects, Inc stated that the new development may “have updated revisions in the design process.” With the population skyrocketing in the previous years and more commercial development underway, some may argue that this expansion to vital public safety resources is long overdue. Mayor Joel Villarreal articulates that “Public Safety is the cornerstone of prosperous, successful and progressive municipalities.” The new public safety building is set to break soil sometime in the next few months.

The county shared a message from Judge Eloy Vera on social media urging people not to forget about their booster shot. “To a certain extent, I think we dropped our guard,” Vera said. “I don’t see as many people keeping the social distance and using the masks. We need to go back and do what we were doing before.” As health experts continue to push for vaccinations, Vera is urging his community to not ease up and to take all precautionary measures seriously.

Encarnacion (Chon) L. Lopez Sr. January 12,1924 - January 22, 2021

If You Could See Me Now If you could see me now, you wouldn’t shed a tear, Though you may not understand why I am no longer here. Remember my spirit, that’s the real me. I’m still very much alive, oh, if you could only see! This beauty is beyond words, nothing can compare. I’ve even seen your mansion; someday I will meet you there. Allow Jesus to be your guide, His word will show you the way. So, please don’t cry! We will meet again someday!

Derric Leo Treviño announces candidacy for Justice of the Peace Pct. 4 Derric Leo Trevino, a lifelong resident of Rio Grande City, has declared his intention to run for the office of Justice of Peace for Precinct 4. Trevino, who recently turned 52, is seeking this position and hopes to be the first candidate elected running as a Republican in Starr County since 1906. “I made the decision to run as a Republican because in my heart I know it would be wrong for me to seek office as a Democrat, a party that I feel no longer aligns with my personal beliefs, or that of the majority of people in our community. I refuse to begin this endeavor on a falsehood. Honesty and integrity is the foundation of my campaign.” Trevino is a self-employed bookkeeper and manages other small businesses in Rio Grande City. He graduated Rio Grande City High School in 1988 and completed his Bachelor of Science Degree in International Economics from Texas Tech University in 1993. Upon returning home, he became the first employee of the newly incorporated City of Rio Grande City and served as the City Secretary. Later that year, Trevino joined the Texas Department of Health and served the people of South Texas in various capacities and positions for several years. In 2002, Trevino was hired as the District Grant Writer for the Rio Grande City CISD where he was successful in obtaining over $17.5 million dollars of funding during his tenure. In 2011, Trevino returned to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) where he performed technical public health work in the nineteen counties of Public Health Region 11. He received and completed training in vaccine preventable diseases; vaccine storage and handling; computer usage and security; and National Incident Command and Management Systems. He participated in Operation Lonestar in 2013, 2014 and served as the Immunization Strike Team coordinator during the 2015 exercise. In the event of a large scale emergency (National or State level), Trevino was to report to the DPS Incident Command Center in Weslaco, TX where he would serve as the resource manager for DSHS operations in the Regional Medical Operations Center. In 2016, Trevino yet again returned to the Rio Grande City CISD as an accountant in the district business office where he performed general accounting services for multiple district programs and departments. He was promoted to Accounts Payable Supervisor in 2017 where he was responsible for overseeing the payment of all district vendors and expenses. In 2019, he assumed the role

of Payroll Supervisor where he oversaw the payment of all school employees. In 2018, Trevino started a part-time bookkeeping service and eventually transitioned to full time in 2019. Trevino is the son of Leopoldo and Leticia Trevino, both lifelong residents of Rio Grande City. In 1997, Derric married the love of his life Lorenza (Lory) Trevino, daughter of Rene and the late Lorenza (Chacha) Trevino. They have two adult children Ahren Leo, and Leanza Gabrielle. His wife Lory is a Licensed Professional Counselor employed by Roma ISD, and is also in private practice. Their son Ahren is a graduate of Texas A&M-Kingsville, where he majored in Chemistry and is a 2nd Lieutenant serving in the Texas Army National Guard. Their daughter Leanza is a contracted U.S. Air Force Cadet at the University of Arkansas, majoring in Chemical Engineering. Trevino believes that his experience working for the state and local governments has more than prepared him to serve in the capacity of Justice of the Peace. He feels that the people of the community can look beyond political parties and groups when they decide who they want to represent them. “The future of our community is in the hands of the voters. It is up to them to decide what they really want. For the first time in over 100 years, they truly have a choice. I have faith, and humbly ask for the support and trust of the people in this quest. Together, we can make history.” Learn more and follow Trevino on his Facebook page: Derric Leo Trevino for Starr County Justice of the Peace Precinct 4 Political ad paid by campaign treasurer Lorenza Trevino
