flexible way to exercise. Just get together with seven other people, friends, neighbors, coworkers, or family members-and start walking, or jogging or biking. We also have a way to give you credit for gardening, housework and other tasks. You can walk together with friends, as a classroom in school, as a family, as co-workers or all
by yourself. You can walk around beautiful Ft. Ringgold, at parks or parking lots around town, in your neighborhood, or on a treadmill. You can adjust your “walking” to fit your lifestyle, fast pace, slow pace, running, morning, noon or evening. You keep track of your miles, to see if you can walk the 830 miles “across Town in 8 weeks”.

Teams are forming and the kick-off will be on Monday, January 28, so sign up yourself or your team. You can log on at: http://walkacrosstexas. tamu.edu Walk Across Texas offers an opportunity to meet new people, start a healthy habit, enjoy a friendly competition, get fit, have fun, and spend prime time with your family, friends, co-workers, club members, neighbors and classmates. Walking with friends and family can improve your health and enhance relationships. Plus, walking with others will make walking more enjoyable. It is important to note that many people will have to work up to being active for 30 minutes a day. Starting slowly like walking 10 minutes a day will improve the chances of success. Physical activity does not need to be strenuous to produce health benefits. Walking the dog, taking walking breaks during the day or taking the stairs or parking far at parking lots are all good ways to work walking into your daily schedule. Research has proven that by the end of Walk Across Texas, you’ll have a healthy habit that will last a lifetime! To find out more about Walk Across Texas you can call the County Extension Office at 956487-2306.

Amen.

Don’t Mess With Texas Scholarship Accepting Applications Applications will be accepted through March 29, 2019 The application process for the 2019 Don’t mess with Texas Scholarship contest is now open. Any Texas high school senior currently attending public, private or home school, and planning to attend an accredited Texas college or university in the coming year, is eligible to apply.
The 2019 Don’t mess with Texas Scholarship contest is presented in partnership with Keep Texas Beautiful and the Moody Foundation. The contest will award one $6,000 scholarship and two $2,000 scholarships in May 2019. The scholarships recognize the achievements of high school seniors who are taking an active role in preventing
litter in their schools and communities while working to build awareness for the Don’t mess with Texas initiative. “We are looking forward to hearing about the creative ways students are taking the Don’t mess with Texas message into their schools and their communities,” said Becky Ozuna, program administrator for TxDOT’s Don’t mess with Texas campaign. “Over the years, the scholarship contest has proven to be a catalyst for jump starting innovative litter prevention programs across the state, thanks to the efforts and leadership of Texas students.” To apply for the Don’t mess with Texas Scholarship, visit dontmesswithtexas.org. Applications must be received via online submission by 5 p.m. (CST) March 29, 2019.
White-crowned sparrows are here for the winter There are 33 species of sparrows in the U. S. and we get to see almost half of them here in the Valley. However, many of them are here only when they migrate south for food and to avoid the winter weather in the north.
Sparrows are often referred to as “little brown jobbies” by bird watchers because sparrows are typically just mottled brown and very difficult to identify. A few, including our year around resident black-throated sparrows, have distinctive markings. My subject today, the white-crowned sparrow, is one of the more attractive and easy to identify. They’ve migrated here for the winter and are a delight to see. Their size is typical of sparrows and they’re plumage is mostly brownish stripes and dots but a glance at the head easily identifies them. The top of the head has four distinct black and three white alternating stripes. There’s a similar bird called the
white-throated sparrow but it has a white throat and yellow between the eyes and bill which is blackish. The white-crowned has a pink or yellow bill and no white on the throat; its throat, breast and belly are plain gray. They’re found in areas with open space but with brushy thickets nearby to retreat to for protection. They mostly forage on the ground for seeds but enjoy an occasional insect if it’s easily caught. Their range extends throughout most of the U. S. and Canada with the highest concentrations in the western mountains where they’re quite common. We get to enjoy them here in the Valley for a few months.
Did you know?
Smoking is an unhealthy habit for anyone, but can be especially harmful to people who begin smoking before the age of 21. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people who start smoking before the age of 21 have the hardest time quitting. In addition, people who begin smoking as teenagers are more likely to use alcohol and illegal drugs than teens who do not smoke. A recent report on the health consequences of smoking from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services noted that, if smoking rates among American youths continue at their current rates, more than 5.5 million Americans currently under the age of 18 will die early from a smoking-related illness. That equates to roughly one in 13 of today’s teenagers. Teenagers should know that cigarettes are not the only tobacco products that threaten their health. The CDC notes that low-tar and additive-free tobacco products also are harmful, as are chewing tobacco, e-cigarettes and cigars.
