Roma High School JROTC Team Competes in San Antonio
(Write up and photos courtesy Ltc. Luis Barrera, Roma High School JROTC Instructor.) Some Gladiator Battalion Cadets put their fitness skills to the test at Camp Bullis, San Antonio, TX on Dec. 8, 2018. It was all a part of Northeast ISD, San Antonio, TX JROTC Raider Challenge programs in Camp Bullis, TX, US Army Base Northwest of San Antonio, TX. Cadets were put through a series of activities that tested their speed and agility. Activities included a race to construct and then use a rope bridge over a creek, 5K Team Run thru the woods, Gauntlet, Obstacle Course and the Crucible (a timed event that includes pushing a Hummer). “Everyone is here for each other no matter what team they are on,” said Cadet Uvaldo Garcia, a sophomore member of the Roma High School JROTC Raider
program. “So, if anyone team is not finish before ours, we’re all there for each other. We support one another even though we are running against each other.” Most of the teams came from the San Antonio area, but besides us, teams from the Houston and Fort Worth area also attended the Raider Challenge. “We came to this Raider Challenge for the opportunity to measure ourselves with the bigger JROTC programs from the state and how good our Raider teams is” said Team Raider Captain Gerry Flores. Roma came in third overall out of 19 teams in our classification. The boys came in 1st in the Rope Bridge Construction. Our next major raider competition is the annual La Copa Ranch Raider Challenge in which we are the two time reigning champions on Feb. 9, 2019.
Paulina Guerra Honored for Presentation at School Board Meeting
Roma High School student Paulina Guerra gave an excellent presentation on the character trait of “Perseverance” at the School Board Meeting.
VIDEO Continued from Front Page https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/ “I believe this video will help Video: https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/ driver/media/Community%20 lower the tension in a traffic stop – and, I hope, allow both the driver/media/Flashing%20 Safety%20Education%20Act. pptx driver and the officer to be safe Lights.mp4 Anyone who watches the video PowerPoint Presentation: and walk away from a traffic stop. Anyone who drives should take time to watch this presentation, no matter how long they’ve been driving,” said TDLR Executive Director Brian Francis. The law requires that driver education and driving safety curriculum include information about proper procedures for citizen and law enforcement interaction during traffic stops. One of the goals of the new law is to lessen tensions and anxieties that may arise during interactions between officers and citizens that could lead to undesired outcomes. “Flashing Lights” is a 16-minute combined video and PowerPoint presentation.
and presentation is encouraged to complete the survey at the end of the presentation to assist TDLR with evaluating the impact of the video.

Reasons to include more dairy in your diet
A healthy diet can improve quality of life and reduce a person’s risk of developing disease or other negative health conditions. For example, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can boost the immune system and promote cardiovascular health, lowering your risk of heart disease in the process. While the benefits of including fruits and vegetables in your diet are widely known, the medical benefits of dairy are often overlooked. The following are a handful of ways that dairy products like low-fat milk, cottage cheese and yogurt can make a nutritious and beneficial addition to your diet. * Dairy packs a protein- and calcium-laden punch. One cup of nonfat yogurt can provide as much as one-third of your daily recommended calcium intake and nearly 20 percent of your daily recommended protein intake. Though dairy products like ice cream don’t pack the same nutritious punch as yogurt, healthier fare like reduced-fat cheese and skim milk can go a long way toward meeting your daily intake of protein and calcium. * Dairy is a great source of vitamin D. In addition to providing sufficient calcium and protein, dairy also helps men, women and children boost their vitamin D. That’s especially important in the winter months when people tend to get less exposure to the sun. Exposure to the sun is a natural way to boost your vitamin D. Dairy products like low-fat milk can boost your vitamin D, which can improve your bone health and, according to recent research, might help reduce your cancer risk. * Dairy may help lower your blood pressure. Men and women with high blood pressure might benefit from including more dairy in their diets. In a study of 5,000 adults, Spanish researchers found that those who reported consuming the most low-fat dairy products were more than 50 percent less likely to develop high blood pressure than those who consumed less low-fat dairy. Though researchers are not certain as to the reason behind lowfat dairy products’ impact on blood pressure, some theorize that their calcium and protein content are likely behind the benefit. * Dairy benefits your bones. Dairy has long been known to improve bone density. But it’s not just seniors who benefit from the bone-strengthening impact of dairy. Youngsters who consume dairy can also expect an increase in bone mass, which can make them less susceptible to injuries like broken bones. Seniors who consume dairy to improve their bone density should know that a recent study from researchers at the Institute for Aging Research found that not all dairy products are equal when it comes to improving bone density. While milk and yogurt were linked to higher bone mineral density, dairy products like cream and ice cream

Want butterflies? Plant some climbing milkweeds
While on a pontoon boat trip on the Rio Grande near Mission a few years ago, we saw a vine hanging over some shrubs along
the river’s edge. It was covered with brightly colored butterflies. They danced and shimmered in the sunlight. On closer inspection, a member of our group identified it as a Mexican milkweed vine. It was said to be common in the Valley. During the years since that viewing, I’ve searched without success for other specimens;
none have appeared. I was anxious to plant some here at Ranch Lomitas since our visitors often come to see butterflies. Not having found any in the wild, I called various companies which sell native plants. Most hadn’t even heard of milkweed vines. My next approach was to consult my library of wildflower
books. I found the listing I sought in only one book: The Audubon Society Fieldguide to North American Wildflowers: Western Region. The milkweed vine, it told me, is commonly called “climbing milkweed” and has the scientific name Funastrum cynanchoides. Part of my difficulty in finding information about it was caused by the fact that the taxonomists (who certify scientific names) have changed the genus name from Funastrum to Sarcostemma and then back to Funastrum.
plant and I could gather a few seeds in season. If you haven’t visited the NABA Butterfly Park, you ought to. This time of the year the butterflies are abundant and, having many of both nectar and host plants, the caterpillars can also be seen. If you need directions on how to get there, call 956-583-5400. It’s next to Bentsen State Park. Back to the climbing milkweed. It’s a vine with stems up to 10 feet in length and blooms in October. The blossoms are in umbels which means that the individual flowers are each at the end of a short stem and many stems radiate out from a central point much like you see when watching bursts of fireworks. The umbels are up to 4 inches across and each blossom is about 1/2 inch wide with 5 petals and 5 sepals. Like
With the name finally settled, I called the North American Butterfly Association in Mission and was told that they had it. They might be able to supply a
typical milkweed flowers, there are 5 tiny “hoods” in the center. The color is creamy white, often tinged with purple or pink. The seed pods are about 3 inches long, plump raindrop shaped, hairy and contain numerous seeds each with a parachute of silky filaments which allow it to be distributed by wind when the pod splits open. The leaves are about 2 1/2 inches long and narrowly heart shaped. They are in opposite pairs, one on each side of the stem. If you break a stem, it oozes a milky sap like milkweed plants do -- hence the name milkweed. The climbing milkweeds are found in Texas, northerly into Oklahoma and westerly to California. The butterflies love them wherever they’re found. Do visit the NABA Butterfly Park in Mission.
