The Rio Grande City Rotary Club was chartered on January 24, 1968, by the sponsoring Rotary Club of San Diego, Texas.

Rotary is a global network of 1.4 million leaders and problemsolvers who unite and take action to create lasting change around the world, in our community, and ourselves. Rotary International’s continuing effort is polio eradication worldwide. Obituary

Evangelina Campos November 14, 1926 † January 18, 2024

Evangelina Campos passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas surrounded by her family. She was born in Rancho Nuevo, (now known as Roma, Texas) Starr County, Texas.

She graduated from Rio Grande City High School in 1946 and later attended Pan American University. Evangelina worked as a legal secretary for Pope and Pope Law Firm for 35 years.

After retirement she worked for the Roma Independent School District.

She was known as Evita to her

friends, she was very devoted to her parents, Pedro Campos and Josefina Sosa Campos.

Evangelina is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Raul Campos; and sister, Otila C Reyna. She is survived by her brother, Rene Campos; sister Alicia C. Betz; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

The family would like to express their gratitude to all her care givers who took excellent care of her.

City Commission Officially Recognizes New RGC Queens Registration Now Open

for City of RGC Men’s Basketball League

The City Commission of Rio Grande City officially welcomed the 2024 Miss Rio Grande City Victoria Salinas, and the 2024 Little Miss Rio Grande City Kendra Gomez, during the regular Commission Meeting on Tuesday, January 16th, at City Hall.

Both queens thanked the commission and are excited to

represent our city with confidence and grace. “On behalf of the City Commission of Rio Grande City we would like to congratulate each of our 2024 queens,” stated RGC Mayor Joel Villarreal.

The Miss Starr County and Miss Rio Grande City Dual Pageant was held at the Rio Grande City GISD Auditorium on Saturday, November 18.

According to a press release from the district, the objective of the pageant is to help empower young girls by providing a platform where they can build confidence, poise, leadership and social skills. It is also an opportunity to serve as role models in our community and portray a positive image for the youth today.

Registration is now open for the Rio Grande City Parks and Recreation Department’s Adult Men’s Basketball League.

The league is open to men 18 years of age, or older, and the registration fee is $40 per player.

“The goal of the Rio Grande City Parks and Recreation Department is to offer many opportunities to the community at large,” declared Rio Grande City Parks & Rec. Director Frank Eguia. “Leagues like these are another way for individuals to engage in regular physical activity, promoting a healthy lifestyle and overall well-being.”

Equia explained how beyond the physical aspects, these leagues foster a sense of camaraderie and community spirit as players come together to compete and share a common passion for the sport. The social aspect of participating in a local basketball league also contributes to building friendships and a sense of belonging.

Additionally, these leagues often serve as a means of stress relief and a way for individuals to unwind from their daily responsibilities. Overall, men’s basketball leagues organized by local parks and recreation departments play a vital role in enhancing both the physical and social aspects of participants’ lives while contributing positively to the community’s overall health and cohesion.

Starr County Fair Queen and Court Crowned

The 2024 Starr County Fair Queen and her court were crowned at the annual Youth Fair Pageant held January 27 at the RGCGISD Fort Ringgold Auditorium.

Jenelle Jay Gonzalez is the 2024 Starr County Fair Queen.

A sophomore at Rio Grande City High School, fifteen year old Jenelle is the daughter of Jay and April Gonzalez.

First runner-up is Victoria Lee Salinas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Victor and Anna Salinas.

Second runner-up and Miss Photogenic is Lia Kathleen Gutierrez, daughter of Jose Luz and Kathy Gutierrez.

Third runner-up is Ava Christine Brown, daughter of Albert Brown, Jr. and Tracy and William Torres.

Fourth runner-up is Alma Ruby Pena, daughter of Rene and Estrella Pena.

Named Teen Princess was Sarah Lee Barrera, daughter of Jorge Luis and Graciela Barrera.

Preteen Princess is Allison Drew Fleming, daughter of David and Velma Fleming.

Petite Princess is Debanhy Alya Guerrero, daughter of Shantay Guerra and Hernan Guerrero III. Precious Princess is Geraldine Marie Sarabia, daughter of Gerardo Sarabia and Maria Teresa Sarabia.

The pageant was sponsored by Starr County 4-H, and 4-Hers and 4-H Adult Leaders volunteered

Congratulations to the Roma High School Choir on a terrific showing at the UIL Regional Choir Solo Competition! The following choir members earned a Division 1 on a Class 1 Solo, advancing to state competition at the end of May: Daisy Bazan, Emma Escobar, Adamaris Garcia, Alexandra Gonzalez, Melanny Hernandez, Emily Rodriguez and Genesis Uresti. The students are under the direction of Choir General Ricardo Sanchez Elementary migrant students had a GREAT time at STEM Camp! Keep up the Directors Alicia Pena and Miguel Martinez. Medina EC Accepting Operation LEGAL NOTICE Round Up Applications Medina Electric Cooperative’s Operation Round Up (ORU) program is currently accepting applications from individuals, families, and organizations in need. ORU is known for helping families with medical bills, assisting after home fires, funding therapies for kids and more. The application deadline is Friday, February 2.

Proactive Measures and Tips to Optimize Energy Use during Cold Weather Medina Electric Cooperative Promotes Energy Efficiency When outdoor temperatures drop, our electricity use increases.

That’s because we’re doing more activities inside, and our heating systems are running longer and more often to counteract colder outdoor temperatures. As a result, your winter electric bill may be higher than what you were used to seeing in the fall months when HVAC systems were not working as hard.

In winter months, when even more electricity is being used simultaneously across the country, it is possible for electricity demand to exceed supply, especially if an unexpected event like a sudden snow or ice storm or equipment malfunction occurs. If this happens, the grid operator for our region, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, may mandate forced rotating power outages to relieve pressure on the grid.

These histories inspired Tejano literature, art, and music and influenced the creation of the Mexican American civil rights movement.

Free MyTXCareer App Now Available for Download in the App Store and on Google Play The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) has launched a new mobile app to help Texans explore potential career pathways and discover step-by-step resources to achieve their goals.

With the launch of MyTXCareer app, job seekers can now find personalized occupation matches and recommended career paths based on their skills, interests, and experience.

“The continued growth of Texas’ record-breaking economy creates opportunities for Texans to advance their careers,” said TWC Chairman Bryan Daniel.

“The MyTXCareer app will be an important tool for Texans to discover potential career paths and match to a job opportunity

with a Texas employer.”

MyTXCareer app is a free resource designed to guide users to potential careers through three easy steps: browse occupations, explore pathways, and get support. While browsing occupations, users can view the average salary for the position, job demand, and position descriptions.

“The MyTXCareer app will help Texans unlock potential opportunities and discover career pathways in highdemand industries,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Alberto Treviño III. “I encourage job seekers and people wanting a career change to download the app and begin to build the skills needed for a new career in the Lone Star State.”

Guidelines for Content of Qualification Statements DO NOT INCLUDE COST INFORMATION with the qualifications statement. Responses that include the cost or pricing information will be rejected and will not be considered by the City.

Detailed instructions on preparation of the qualification statement must be obtained from the City. Minimum Qualifications and Selection Criteria The City will evaluate the proposals to determine which firm has the best qualifications.

Contract Terms and Negotiation Schedule Consultants for Bond Counsel and Financial Advisor are expected to negotiate an agreement for services which is acceptable to the City. If an acceptable contract cannot be negotiated, the City may formally end negotiations and begin negotiating with the highest qualified person or firm.

Contracts are contingent upon release of funds from the TWDB. Any contract awarded under the Requests for Qualifications (RFQs) are expected to be funded in part by a loan from the TWDB. Neither the State of Texas nor any of its departments, agencies, or employees are or will be a party to the RFQs, or any resulting contracts. These RFQs are issued in accordance with Section 2254 of the Texas Government Code (Professional Services Act) and Title 10 Code of Federal Regulations, Part 2 (Uniform Administrative Requirements for Grants and Cooperative Agreements of State and Local Governments).

This contract is subject to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Program, which includes EPA-approved fair share goals toward procurement of Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprise (M/WBE) firms.

EPA rules require that applicants and prime contractors make a good faith effort to award a fair share of contracts, subcontract, and procurements to M/WBEs through demonstration of the six affirmative steps.
