Fort Ringgold Volunteer of the Year 2021
During the Rio Grande City Grulla ISD’s Veteran’s program, Mrs. Elia Ramos was given the KEYS to the FORT for being selected Fort Ringgold’s Volunteer of the year. This is the first time Revive Fort Ringgold recognizes and awards the Keys to the Fort as a gesture for being selected the Fort’s Volunteer of the year.
Maria Elia Ramos: “I was not born in Fort Ringgold or Starr County; in fact, I was born in Edinburg to a humble couple. My parents, Quirino and Julia were very patriotic due
to the fact that Quirino had served in the army in Europe. During a fierce battle in Italy in freezing weather, he was shot in leg. He developed gangrene and his leg was amputated. He returned to Edinburg as a disabled veteran. My parents would insist that we respect the country, flag and elders. In High school and college, community involvement became a part of life, I was part of a political movement that changed Hidalgo politics by electing the first Hispanics to city and count offices. We would go door to door to register voters and making sure they went to vote. With the college Newman Club, I got involved in programs to tutoring colonia kids, teaching adults English, cooking and other essential skills. This awareness led to civil rights movement. So, when I came to Rio Grande City in 1970 as a social worker for the state, I concentrated on helping my clients. After 11 years, I became an American History teacher at Ringgold Junior High in Fort Ringgold instilling patriotism and community involvement to
my students. Mr. Salinas and Mr. Watson made sure I was in charge of the patriotic programs. In the 1990’s, first big flag that was put up by my students every morning and put down every afternoon. Students were eager to do it. One year we read that a mini-Viet Nam Wall was in Weslaco, in three days we had permission slips, busses and my students experienced a lifetime moment. We took advantages of teaching moments like that. Mr. Salinas and I would take students to tour the historical areas of Rio and the fort. Our students would take a yearly tour of the courthouse and speak with the elected officials. Our end of year parties were at a ranch. Needless to say, I loved every moment of teaching in Fort Ringgold. As a teacher and parents, I also spent many hours at Fort Ringgold starting early and staying late. As my kids were involved in most sports, practice was late, waiting for the busses for out-oftown games, dances, home coming dances, one act plays and many other activities. During summers, spending time in the fort was a given as playing baseball, swimming at the fort pool, walking the trails, and playing tennis. Fort Ringgold was our second home, even if there were days that we spent more time here than at home. We loved it and were proud of it. Upon my retirement, I saw the need to improve our fort as

the schools and offices had moved out, it was in dire need of TLC. When the new flagpole was installed, there was a move to revive the fort. A school board member named me to the board, and I became actively involved in Reviving and restoring it. I used to say I didn’t want to die with the fort in disrepair, Well , we still have many plans to revive it and make it the active, bustling center of education and a tourist center that will make us proud.”
