Working past 65? workforce beyond what was once the traditional retirement age. And the number of older workers will only grow over time. One reason is that Social Security now requires you to be at least 66 to collect your full retirement benefits. Retiring earlier means a smaller Social Security check. Then, too, a number of sixtysomething workers continue to pursue their careers because they can’t afford to retire. Still others simply prefer to stay engaged and on the job. Whatever the reason for postponing your retirement, you still need to consider Medicare as you approach your 65th birthday and qualify for the health care coverage. First, you should visit with your company’s human resources manager to determine how your employer-provided insurance will fit with Medicare. That’s also true for anyone turning 65 and receiving health care through a working spouse’s group plan. Most workers will want to sign up for Medicare’s Part A, which usually has no monthly premium and covers hospital stays, skilled nursing, home health services and hospice care. Of course, like most rules of thumb, there’s always an exception. And this one is no different. If your employer coverage takes the form of a highdeductible insurance plan with a health savings account, you should defer enrolling in Part A. That’s because the Internal Revenue Service forbids you to continue contributing to your taxadvantaged savings account once you have Medicare. When you sign up for Medicare’s Part B, which covers doctor appointments and other outpatient services, mostly depends on how large your employer is. If your or your working spouse’s company has 20 or more employees, your employerprovided insurance will remain your primary coverage and will pay your bills first. You can delay
enrolling in Part B until you stop working. If your or your spouse’s company has fewer than 20 workers, Medicare will become your primary coverage, and your employer coverage will be secondary, so you should sign up for Part B. Assuming that you’re not yet receiving Social Security benefits, you’ll need to enroll in Medicare by contacting Social Security at 800-772-1213 or www.socialsecurity.gov. Completing the online application is fairly simple and typically takes 10 to 30 minutes. You should do this during what’s called your “initial enrollment period,” which runs from three months before the month you turn 65 to three months after your birthday month. For example, if your 65th birthday is in September, you can sign up any time from June 1 until Dec. 31. There’s also the question of whether you’ll need to enroll in Medicare’s prescription drug coverage, also known as Part D, when you turn 65 or whether you can put off that decision. Again, you should consult with your company’s benefits manager. If your employer plan includes drug coverage that’s at least comparable to Part D coverage, you won’t need to sign up right away. When you do finally stop working, you’ll be able to enroll in Medicare (Parts A or B) without risking a late penalty during a special eight-month enrollment period. You’ll also have two months to select a Medicare drug plan without a penalty. To learn more about how your employer health plan works with Medicare, visit www.medicare. gov/publications and view the booklet “Medicare and Other Health Benefits: Your Guide to Who Pays First.” Or call 800633-4227 to request a free copy. Understanding how your insurance choices fit together as you continue working beyond 65 will help you get the best care for your dollars.

Did you know? Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, is often mistaken as something that only affects aging men and women. While the Alzheimer’s Association® notes that age is the biggest risk factor for Alzheimer’s, the group also warns that even men and women nowhere close to retirement age can develop the disease. In fact, the Alzheimer’s Association reports that, in the United States alone, roughly 200,000 people under the age of 65 have early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, many people with early-onset are in their 40s and 50s. Recognizing that Alzheimer’s is not just for retirees but capable of affecting younger men and women with families and careers is important, as the Alzheimer’s Association points out that health care providers typically do not look for signs or symptoms of Alzheimer’s in young people. In such people, symptoms of Alzheimer’s may be incorrectly attributed to stress. Adults who suspect they might be suffering from earlyonset Alzheimer’s should have a comprehensive medical evaluation, which may include a neurological exam and/or brain imaging, conducted by a physician who specializes in Alzheimer’s disease.

There have been cockroaches for 320 million years The history of our ancestors goes back some 20 million years but our subject for today has been around for about 320 million years! Talk about staying power. Cockroaches have been found in the fossil record as far back as the Carboniferous period in forms similar to those found in today’s world. Only a very successful and adaptable design could have survived the violent upheavals of so many millions of years. Let’s take a look at this remarkable insect. It’s estimated that there are about 3,000 species of cockroaches, several of which are found in Texas. We’ll concentrate on the one called the American cockroach while remembering that there are several others in Texas including the relatively common German cockroach. The American cockroach is one of the largest, growing up to 2 inches in body length; the German cockroach is less than half that length. The American’s antennae are longer than its body. There are four wings, two pair. The forewings are rather tough and leathery while the hindwings are membranous. The body color is brown with the wings being a lighter tint. The body shape is a long, flat oval, like a deflated football. Since it’s an insect, there are three pairs of legs.
The front part of the body seen from above, is called the pronotum. It’s actually the second body part but you can’t see the first part, the head, which is concealed beneath the front of the pronotum. The

Roaches have predators just as other insects do but they have some good defenses. For one, they’re fast. One study clocked them at 3.4 mph which, if they were human size, would be 210 mph. WOW! A good friend of mine once informed me that they also respond very quickly to changes in air currents and pressure. So if you try to swat them, the air pressure of your swatter, before it hits, will send them scurrying. In homes, roaches are real pests. They produce an unpleasant odor and leave excrement on exposed food. They also attack books, carpets, leather goods, and clothing. Some people are allergic to them but, fortunately, it’s rare for them to carry human diseases. If you have a roach problem, one author suggests making a mixture of two parts flour, one part boric acid and one part sugar. Moisten the mixture and form little balls. Place them in infested areas and remoisten as needed. Keep children and pets away! You can of course call a pest exterminator. While cockroaches are serious pests indoors, outside they are beneficial by helping with the removal of wastes. There are two sides to most stories. They’ve been around for a long time and will be around a lot longer, so, we have to learn to live with them.
Did you know? According to estimates from the United Nations, across the globe there are 101.8 men for every 100 women. However, in several areas of the world, particularly former Soviet republics, female populations significantly outnumber male populations. In fact, many former Soviet republics have been predominantly female since at least World War II. By contrast, the United States has 100 women for every 98.3 men. According to the World Atlas, Latvia, Lithuania, Curacao, Ukraine, Armenia, Russian Federation, Belarus, Estonia, and El Salvador are countries in which there are considerably more females than males. In Latvia, there were 84.8 males for every 100 females in 2015. Conversely, the United Arab Emirates, which has only a 26.7 percent female population, boasts a very low number of women compared to its male population. Many of the professions in this region are maledominated, accounting for the higher influx of male immigrants.

head has a pair of compound eyes and chewing mouthparts. One identifying feature of the American cockroach is that the pronotum has two dark, reddish spots surrounded by a yellowish area. It’s adult, large size is also a clear indication of its identity. Most cockroaches live outdoors but, if food is scarce, the weather is too hot, dry or cold, and your home has cracks in the foundation or around windows, doors and utility entrances, cockroaches are happy to take up residence inside. They prefer moist places and like the same foods you do. They typically hide during the day and then forage for food at night. In addition to food scraps, they eat glue, bookbindings and leather. One reason for their success is that, like us, they’re omnivorous. That is, they eat both meat and vegetable matter. People have reported seeing white cockroaches and think they’re albinos. Not so. These are cockroaches which have just molted, which they do about a dozen times as they grow, and the new exoskeleton has not yet darkened. Their life span is about 2 years.
