Rio Grande City C.I.S.D. Summer Kids Camp at Ringgold Elementary has been a GRAND SUCCESS!! Mrs. Vargas has been inspiring our R.G.C.C.I.S.D. students through handson activities during their instructional day. Our students have been given many learning opportunities: hands-on activities, crafts, academics, and other recreational summer activities. Beginning with the End in Mind in all that they do during their Summer School journey. Synergizing with one another in accomplishing their plans and goals they have set for themselves. Our students have researched through technology on creator of Piñatas. Students enjoyed learning about the creator and synergized in constructing their Summer Fun Piñata. Our staff is empowering students and developing the whole child through the unforgettable educational opportunities. We want to take this time to THANK Mrs. Vargas for inspiring our students and making a difference in their lives. YOU ARE AMAZING LEADER at R.G.C.C.I.S.D.

Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it, Dear Jesus, and place it within your own heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. La Alegría de la Vida
We thought of you with love today, but that is nothing new. We thought about you yesterday and days before that too. We think of you in silence, we often speak your name. All we have now are memories and your pictures in a frame. Your memory is our keepsake with which we’ll never part. God has you in his keeping; we have you in our hearts. A thousand times we cried. If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died. In life we loved you dearly; in death we love you still. In our hearts you hold a place no one can ever ill. It broke our hearts to lose you but you didn’t go alone. For a part of us went with you the day God took you home.

important to me, and gives my constituents, across the district, the opportunity to voice their thoughts and concerns,” explained Guillen. “Everything I do is to help my constituents in District 31, and if it wasn’t for their support and influence, I would not have been able to accomplish as much as I have.” Guillen will travel across South Texas stopping at local Dairy Queens to hear the thoughts, opinions, and concerns of local residents, while simultaneously providing insight to the families that make District 31 so special. State Representative Guillen has always held the opinions of his constituents in high regard, and consistently makes an effort to better the situation of all residents through the use of his many outreach programs. In addition to the Listening Tour, Guillen also hosts a Virtual Town Hall, a Virtual Constituent Summit, and an Office Open House, to provide as much transparency and communication as possible. The discourse provided during these events is invaluable, and helps him create legislation that benefits District 31 and the state. “We had a very successful session this go around, but we can always do better,” said Guillen, “I get some of my best legislative ideas from the people back home, and I want to be ready to address their needs next go around.” Guillen is excited to be back on the road talking issues and
raising blood sugar levels with our fellow South Texans at a Dairy Queen near you. With the continued input from District 31 residents, this months listening tour is bound to be another great success.
Serving ten rural South Texas counties in the Texas House of Representatives, Ryan Guillen is known for his hard work, fierce independence, and relentless efforts for South Texas families. Recently, Capitol Inside called him a “House Bill Machine,” and a “one-person assembly line for legislation.” Since elected, few other legislators have passed more bills than Guillen. Roma ISD Wins State-Wide Education Award from H-E-B Roma ISD Highlights May 2019 Wall of Fame Honorees
In May, H-E-B announced statewide winners for the 18th annual H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards during an awards ceremony at the Fairmont Hotel in Austin. Roma ISD was named the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards 2019 Small School District and was awarded $50,000! This is the first time Roma ISD has been nominated for this award. “On behalf of the Roma ISD Gladiator Nation family I want to say that we are truly humbled and honored by this recognition,” Roma ISD Superintendent Carlos Guzman said at the event. “If you had told any of us ten years ago that we would be standing here tonight, we wouldn’t have believed it, but we would have said it was a dream. The success we have achieved at Roma ISD is not based on any one set of actions, but I can say it is based on one important virtue in life - humility.” “Thomas Moore said that Humility is that low, sweet root, from which all heavenly virtues shoot. And I believe that humility is the root of every success in The Gladiator Nation. We have always focused on staying true to our humble roots, which is grounded in foundation of our rural farm working community. The success of our district is built on the backs on immigrant laborers that wanted to create a better life for future generations,”
he continued. “This award is a true tribute to the generations of families that have struggled through life on the border and helped create a truly exceptional community and school district. This award is a tribute to never forgetting where we started as we move forward toward continued excellence. I thank you again on behalf of the thousands in our community who coalesce to create the Great Gladiator Nation. We are sincerely humbled and grateful for this honor.” During the ceremony, H-E-B Chairman and CEO Charles Butt handed out $430,000 in
cash awards and grants, and congratulated eight educators, two school districts, one early childhood agency and a public school board for being among the best in Texas. H-E-B launched the Excellence in Education Awards program in cooperation with the Texas Association of School Administrators in 2002 as a positive way to support public education in Texas. It has become the largest monetary program for educators in the state, spotlighting best practices and celebrating the passion and creativity of Texas educators.

How to show good sportsmanship Winning isn’t the most important part of team sports. Good sportsmanship is the primary goal. Children and adults learn many valuable lessons while competing in sports. Participating in sports helps solidify lessons in following directions, and can teach athletes the value of dedicating themselves to goals. Sports also provide physical exercise and an opportunity to exhibit good sportsmanship. A 2014 national survey of 2,000 youth sports parents and coaches by Liberty Mutual Insurance revealed that even though they believe sportsmanship is one of the most important lessons of youth sports, 50 percent of respondents feel that sportsmanship has worsened in youth sports since responding adults were children themselves. Some startling findings included 60 percent of respondents reporting either witnessing or participating in negative or abusive sideline behavior, and 55 percent of coaches have experienced parents yelling negatively at officials or their own children. Good sportsmanship occurs when people who are participating and those observing the sport treat one another with respect. This includes all players, parents, coaches, and officials. While there’s much that coaches can do to instill good sportsmanship among their teammates, it is up to the parents and the players to help develop these skills. Here are some ways to encourage good sportsmanship. ·Parents can set an example. Parents watching from the sidelines should refrain from yelling at refs or negatively commenting on their kid’s performance - or the performance of any other player, for that matter. Offer high praise for the effort, win or lose. ·Maintain a positive attitude. Positivity can go a long way. Encourage others to do their best, and always put forth your best effort throughout game play. ·Support teammates. Never criticize a teammate for trying his or her best. Always commend the effort. ·Accept the officials’ decisions. Rules are in place to make the game fair and consistent. Follow the rules and accept when a ref, umpire or other official makes a call. Do not argue the call. ·Play fair. Never cheat or bend the rules to get ahead. ·Be a team player. Do your best to involve the whole team, even those players who may need a little extra help. Showboating or hogging the ball to show off your skills is discouraged. ·Win or lose with class. Always congratulate the winning team on a job well done if you are on the losing side. Accept the loss and own up to trying better next time. If you are on the winning team, shake hands with the losing team and wish them well. Do not gloat. Sportsmanship is an important lesson that athletes can apply to other facets of their life.

The plains black-headed snake is a marvelous miniature I’ve grown accustomed to being regularly amazed by the diversity of wildlife in this area. Hardly a week goes by without my seeing some life-form that I couldn’t have imagined. Seth Patterson, son of Tom Patterson a former president of the Rio Grande Wilderness Society, likes to wander in the wilderness and turn over rocks and old logs. A few years ago he found a plains black-headed snake and was thoughtful enough to bring it to a meeting for us to see. These little snakes are
marvelous miniatures. Imagine, a round pencil which is colored tan. Now imagine that the eraser is charcoal color. Aside from the fact that snakes are flexible and more tapered than a pencil, that’s what the black-headed snake is like in length, size and color. It’s ventral side is gray to pinkish.

They spend their time out of sight under leaf debris, rocks, logs, and in burrows. They may venture out on warm days following light rains. They have fangs with weak venom in the back of their mouths but are of no threat to people. They couldn’t open their tiny mouths wide enough to bite us and the venom is too weak to The record length is about 15 matter. inches. Most are in the 7 to10 inch length. One captive laid two eggs which hatched in about six weeks. The hatchlings were about two and a half inches long. These delightful little snakes are part of the diversity of life in the Valley, one more reason to preserve the thorny brush wilderness.
