Making History: School Board Changes Name To Show UNITED Communities In what will be remembered for generations to come, the Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School District has decided to change its name to Rio Grande City Grulla Independent School District to reflect the two major cities that make it up. Since 1955, The school district has been named Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School District, but in a long overdue move, the School Board of Trustees decided to rectify this to the more apt Rio Grande City Grulla Independent School District. When reached for comment,
School Board President, Eduardo “Eddie” Ramirez said, “When the school district name was initially changed to Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School District, it was done so in an effort to join both cities of Rio Grande City and La Grulla under one district, and the term “Consolidated” was incorporated and added to its name. By replacing “Consolidated” with “Grulla” in its official name, the school district is essentially giving effect to its original intent while, simultaneously, emboldening a spirit of cohesiveness. Quite appropriately, there is probably
no better time to do so than in today’s ever adapting culture of inclusivity!!” School Board Secretary Basilio “Bacho” Villarreal stated, “I am very proud of our school board for having the courage to change the name of our school district from Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School District to Rio Grande City Grulla Independent School District. This is a monumental moment which reflects what is most important in life, children, education and dreams. We are truly blessed that now, now, now, we have become one family, and United we stand.” School Board
Member Noe Castillo, who has his roots firmly in the Grulla area, and was very instrumental in the name change decision stated, “This is a representation of La Grulla and the Rio Grande city educational systems. Two great Schools representing One United District.” The entire school board made it a priority to make this happen before the start of the new school year. This past year has been a year like no other and this sets the stage for a new year filled with hope and good cheer. The name change has also meant a new logo has to be designed to represent the district. Currently,
there is a contest that allows any student, staff or member of the community to design the logo to be forever immortalized as the creators of the district logo. The deadline for the new logo competition submissions will be July 31, 2021. The district encourages anyone to try their hand at the contest and will unveil the new logo in the beginning of the school year once the school board approves it.

Roma ISD and Roma High School are proud and honored to announce that the U.S. Department of Education selected the Roma High School Mariachi Nuevo Santander to make a special appearance at their annual Equity Summit! The mariachi was nominated by T.E.A. to make a special virtual pre-recorded performance appearance. The nomination was based on the impact these amazing student performers have had during the pandemic in the entire country and for showing
their outstanding example of resilience through music. The event took place on Tuesday, June 22, featuring pre-recorded welcome remarks from First Lady Jill Biden, participation from Education Secretary Miguel Cardona and Deputy Secretary Cindy Martin, as well as leaders and educators from across the country. The program discussed the challenges and best practices of building equity in K-12 classrooms. “We are extremely honored to be able to represent Roma
ISD, TEA and the great state of Texas at this important national education event,” said Mariachi Nuevo Santander Director Eloy Garza. “When we started the pandemic I had no idea where our program would be in a year, but the dedication and perseverance of these students has ensured we have exceeded all expectations. I am so honored to be leading these student performers into another great school year that I know will be filled with success for them.” OPEN MON-SUN 7AM-7PM

We thought of you with love today but that is nothing new. We thought about you yesterday and days before that too. We think of you, in silence we often speak your name, all we have are memories and your picture in a frame. Your memory is our keepsake with which we’ll never part. God has you in his keeping, we have you in our hearts. No farewell words were spoken no time to say goodbye, you were gone before we knew it and only God knows why. If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever. God grant us the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things we can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Dios me quería ahora...

TxDOT’s “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” campaign urges drivers to slow down and stay alert in oil and gas production and exploration regions TxDOT is urging motorists to make safety a priority when they’re behind the wheel, especially in areas where oil and gas activity often brings increased traffic and large trucks to rural areas and adjacent communities. In 2020, nearly 70,000 crashes occurred in the state’s five major energy production areas—the Permian Basin, Eagle Ford Shale, Barnett Shale, Anadarko Basin and Haynesville/Bossier Shale— resulting in 932 fatalities. Failure to control speed and driver inattention were the top reasons for crashes in these areas. TxDOT offers these tips when driving in energy-production areas: •Drive a safe speed, accounting for traffic, road conditions and

weather. •Focus 100% on driving and put your phone away: no talking or texting when behind the wheel. •Give large trucks plenty of space, be patient and pass only when it’s safe and legal to do so. •Obey stop signs and traffic signals. •Never drive under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. •Always buckle up—drivers and passengers, day and night. Drivers should also remember the “Move Over or Slow Down” law, requiring motorists to move over a lane or slow to 20 mph below the posted speed limit when approaching an emergency vehicle, law enforcement, TxDOT vehicle, tow truck or utility vehicle stopped with flashing lights activated on the roadside. “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” is a key component of #EndTheStreakTX, a broader social media and word-ofmouth effort that encourages drivers to make safer choices while behind the wheel such as wearing a seat belt, driving the speed limit, never texting and driving and never driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. Nov. 7, 2000 was the last deathless day on Texas roadways. #EndTheStreakTX asks all Texans to commit to driving safely to help end the streak of daily deaths.
City Of La Grulla Fourth Of July Basketball Tournament Winners
The winning team was DDJ and its members were: Diego Martinez, Daniel Martinez and Jason Vega. Congratulations to them for their participation, endurance and their team effort. Kudos also to the second place team—The Ballers—which consisted of Austin Garcia, Angel Oyervides and Andrew Sanchez. Thank you to Jacob Morales for organizing, running and participating in the Fourth of July Basketball tournament. He did an outstanding job in putting it together. His ultimate goal is to be able to install NBA-style backboards in the City basketball courts for the community to enjoy. He is also trying to have an on-going basketball league to
continue playing. So many teams participated. It was such a heart-warming experience to see the students—boys and girls—enjoying themselves and having so much fun in friendly competition. Some of the teams were composed of fathers and sons! What a great bonding and loving experience. Ultimately, thanks to the new City Administration— Mayor Patricia Solis, Comm. Lori Solis and have lit up the community into Comm. Andy Hernandez. They action.

5 benefits of game play for children Parents walk a fine line when trying to determine how much time to allow their kids to engage in game play. for learning. Board games are some of the first games young children get to play, and they can serve as introductions to lessons kids will ultimately learn in school. Simple games help children follow directions, learn colors, numbers, and develop handeye coordination, according to Scholastic. As kids age and games become more challenging, the chances for learning increase. 2. Games help with physical development. Parenting magazine reports that outdoor play entices children to be active and can boost fitness and physical stamina. All types of games work the body by strengthening muscles and bones. Being outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine is good for the body and mind. When a child is
physically fit, he or she also may have a strong immune system that reduces the risk of developing diseases like obesity or diabetes later in life. 3. Games can boost creativity Whether they’re following the rules or finding ways to circumvent them, games offer opportunities for children to delve into their creative sides and utilize their imaginations. Video games can immerse them in different worlds where they can ponder the what-ifs of role play. 4. Boost interest in school subjects Certain video games depict historical settings or events that drive the play. Players
may want to learn more about these situations and events. In addition, sparking an interest in various subjects and keeping the mind active can improve basic cognitive functions, states the pregnancy and childcare resource Maternity Glow. 5. Games allow for broadened social activity Much in the way that game nights can help adults bond and make new friends, children who play games together may be able to meet others and engage with kids their age due to this shared interest. Children can benefit from game play in ways that might surprise their parents.

Modern cars are technological marvels, and it turns out drivers may value tech over all else, including their choice of automaker. A 2017 study from Autotrader asked 1,000 participants an assortment of questions about technology and car buying. Roughly 60 percent of millennial car shoppers and more than 40 percent of baby boomers indicated they would switch vehicle brands just to get the technology features they want. Drivers are even willing to pay extra for their preferred tech. The Autotrader study found that the average shopper would pay an extra $2,276 to get the right tech features.

Roma ISD is excited to announce the addition of a new level of protection for students and staff – Clorox 360 Electrostatic Sprayers for all facilities. This new technology reduces the ability for germs to thrive in school environments using an electrostatic sprayer paired with special nontoxic chemicals. “We are happy to bring this awesome new level of protection to our community,” explained Roma ISD Business and Finance
Manager Pedro Alaniz. “This tool can purify up to 18,000 square feet in one hour. Janitors at each campus will continue to be very diligent throughout the day, cleaning common areas and disinfecting bathrooms. Now though, after cleaning all classroom desks as normal, they will use this new disinfecting tool to ensure anything they missed is purified and ready for the next school day.” “To date, we have had very few issues with cleaning and
disinfecting our campuses during our Summer Enrichment Program and have had no facility shutdowns due to COVID, so the procedures we have in place are working well,” added Alaniz. “With the addition of this purification technology we are 100 percent confident our schools will be pure and ready for our students and staff each day during the 2021-2022 school year. This is a safe extra step to protect our community, so the investment of approximately $15,000 a year
for the chemical solutions used by the machines that were provided for free, is well worth it for The Gladiator Nation.” Each campus janitorial team will use the Clorox machines at the end of each school day, after all other employees and students have left the facilities. Also, each facility will have extra janitorial help during the 2021-2022 school year to ensure cleanliness and disinfection are well maintained each day.

Roma ISD’s Federal Programs Department Purchased Water Bottle for All Students
A dog cholla is a very mean cactus! Since moving here some 20 years ago, I’ve been very interested in the cacti of the area. There are about 30 species native to Starr County and the one I’d like us to examine today is one of the very mean ones. It’s common names include devil cactus, dog cholla and clavellina (which means pink and doesn’t make any sense to me except that some spines may occasionally show a hint of pink). The scientific name depends upon which taxonomist you prefer. Most call it Opuntia shottii but one of the most respected current experts has now reclassified it as Grusonia shottti. Regardless of what you call it, it’s the same mean plant.
Dog chollas are prostrate cacti with lots of short club shaped joints (branches), about 3 inches in length, which form mats on the ground. Seldom more than 2 or 3 inches in height, you can walk into a patch without realizing it. You won’t realize it, that is, until you feel the pain of the sharp spines. The spines are up to a couple of inches long, very sharp and have small barbs and grooves to make them stick onto your shoes, clothing and flesh. While wandering through the brush a few years ago, along with my dog Lance, I happened into a patch of dog cholla. Lance did also. He got some spines in his feet and tried
to use his teeth to remove them thus getting them in his mouth as well. Ouch!!! We had a few frantic and painful minutes getting them removed. You do have to be cautious during hikes through the wild. Spines are most numerous toward the larger end of each cactus joint and are colored brown, gray or nearly white. The spines are also diverse is size ranging from very small up to those about 2 inches in length. At the base of each cluster of spines is a bunch of tiny spines called glochids, a characteristic of Opuntia cacti. Glochids, being so tiny, are almost impossible to remove if you get stuck with them; you’ll feel the pain and itching for days or weeks. As the spines stick into some passing animal or person, entire joints may be pulled off and when
the spines are removed from fur or clothing the joints will have been transported to a new location. It’s an effective dispersal mechanism. The spot from which the spines grow is called an areole which is a specialized part of all cacti. From areoles, which function something like buds in most plants, arise the spines, new pads (branches) and flowers. The flowers bloom in the spring, are yellow and slightly less than an inch is diameter. They’re followed by small fruits, called tunas in cacti, which are also yellow in color. Some birds and small mammals eat the tunas. While I could be satisfied if there were no devil cacti here, they are none-the-less an interesting and integral part of our thorny brush country.
