RGV’s Little Elves Surprised with a Special Delivery to Delia Gonzalez Garcia Elementary Students
RGC FREE Rabies Vaccine Clinic was a very successful event
Delia Gonzalez Garcia Elementary students were surprised with a special delivery from RGV’s Little Elves, a non-profit organization from the Rio Grande Valley. The school received 40 bicycles after their teacher, Ms. Norma Cordova nominated her school to enter a valley wide Summer School contest. Her nomination application was selected of over 28 applicants. Ms. Cordova’s lucky class was each awarded a brand new bicycle and the rest were raffled among students attending the summer program. Ms. Cordova’s class, DGG Administration and DGG Staff would like to thank RGV Little Elves for bringing smiles to the students. They were all so happy to receive their bike and cannot wait to enjoy them during their summer break.
The Rio Grande City Police Department and the Rio Grande City Animal Kennel teamed up with local veterinarians, Dr. Margo and Dr. Rios, and hosted a FREE Rabies Vaccine Clinic on Saturday, June 10th, at City Hall for RGC residents! It was a very successful event with over 108 pets receiving FREE rabies vaccines. On behalf of the City of RGC City Commission we would like to thank Dr. Margo and the RGCPD for helping our community ensure their pets had affordable access to care.

Governor Abbott Signs Vital Save Women’s Sports Act
On June 15, 2023, Governor Greg Abbott signed the Save Women’s Sports Act passed during the 88th Regular Legislative Session into law at the Texas Capitol. This new law will protect the integrity of women’s sports by prohibiting biological men from competing against female athletes at Texas colleges and universities.
“Today is an important day for female athletes across the state of Texas, including little girls who aspire to one day compete in college sports,” said Governor Abbott. “The Save Women’s Sports Act protects young women at Texas colleges
and universities by prohibiting men from competing on a team or as an individual against them
in college sports. Sports have inspired many women to cast bold visions and dreams of
what they want to achieve. The legacy of women’s sports will be safeguarded for generations to come. Women in Texas can be assured that the integrity of their sports will be protected in our state.”
In 2021, Governor Abbott signed similar legislation to protect girls’ sports in Texas public schools.
The Governor was joined at
the bill signing ceremony by Senators Mayes Middleton and Donna Campbell; Representatives Caroline Harris, Tom Oliverson, and Valoree Swanson; former collegiate swimmer Jeri Shanteau; collegiate basketball player Kassidy Comer; powerlifter Jade Dickens; collegiate swimmer Ellie McLeod; collegiate volleyball player Makenna Miller; and other women’s sports advocates.
Senate Bill 15 (Middleton/ Swanson) prohibits a biological male from competing in a college-level athletic competition designated for a biological female athlete to maintain competitive fairness. The bill also creates a mechanism for people to seek injunctive relief against a Texas public college or university or intercollegiate athletic team if it violates the provisions of the bill.

City of Rio Grande City, TMLIRP hosted a meeting for city employees
Your portable generator can keep your family safe
Using a portable generator can keep major appliances working during a power outage.
Just remember to use it safely.
Protective tips:
•Place your generator outdoors, at least 20 feet from your home’s doors, windows, or vents. Keeping distance helps protect you from carbon monoxide gas, which is colorless, odorless, and potentially deadly.
•Let your generator cool down before refueling.
•Don’t store fuel inside your home.
you avoid unnecessary risks.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
Notice is hereby given that the Planning and Zoning Commission for the City of Roma will hold a Public Hearing on Monday July 10, 2023, at 5:30 P.M. at the Roma City Council Chambers, located at 77 Convent Street, Roma, Texas to determine whether to approve or disapprove the following:
The City of Rio Grande City, along with TMLIRP, hosted a meeting at the City Hall Chambers on Tuesday, June 13th, for city employees. This meeting focused on how to avoid heat stroke, working around heavy equipment, and safe vehicle operations. Now more than ever is the best time to stay hydrated and make sure to know the signs of heat stroke if you’re working outside. On behalf of the City of Rio Grande City, we would like to thank our employees for making time to attend this important workshop.
State health officials provide hot weather precautions
With excessive heat warnings in effect for most Texas residents, the Texas Department of State Health Services urges people to be aware of the signs of heat illness and take precautions to protect themselves from heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
The elderly, young children, people with chronic diseases and those without access to air conditioning are most at risk.
Staying in an air-conditioned area, either at home or at public places like malls, libraries or community centers, is the best way to combat heat. People can find a map of cooling centers maintained by the Texas Division of Emergency Management at tdem.texas.gov/cool. If air conditioning is not available, open windows, pull down shades to keep out direct sunlight and use fans to cool rooms.
The best defense against heat-
related illness is prevention. Stay cool, drink plenty of fluids, wear cool clothing and limit strenuous outdoor activities. Other
precautions:
Take action at the first sign of heat illness. Symptoms of heat illness include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, weakness, dizziness, nausea, weak but rapid pulse and headaches. People experiencing these symptoms should find shade, drink water slowly and make sure there is good ventilation. If symptoms don’t improve, seek medical attention.
Never leave anyone, including pets, in a parked vehicle – even for a short time. Vehicles can heat up to deadly temperatures within minutes. Cracking the windows does little to keep temperatures down. If your child sits in the back seat, put your purse, briefcase, wallet or another essential item
behind you so you’ll notice your child is there before exiting the vehicle. Young children are particularly vulnerable to heat. Call 9-1-1 immediately if you see an unattended child in a vehicle. Check frequently on older friends, neighbors and family members. Visit at least twice a day and watch for signs of heat illness. Assist them with transportation to places with air conditioning and make sure they know what to do if they experience heat illness. Most deaths caused by heat stroke occur in people older than 50 years old. They are more likely to have a medical condition or be taking medication that can interfere with the body’s response to heat.
Drink plenty of water. Drink liquids 30 minutes before going outside and continue even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and sugary drinks.
•Plug appliances directly into your generator or use a heavyduty, outdoor-rated extension cord. Check extension cords for cuts, tears, or missing prongs.
•If you want to connect your generator to your home’s wiring, hire a licensed electrician. Make sure the electrician uses a properly rated switch that meets electrical codes.
Another essential: Read your owner’s manual. This will help
