The Broken Chain We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone for part of us went with you, the day that God called you home. You left us beautiful memories, your love is still our guide, and though we cannot see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same; but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again. We would like to extend our sincerest thanks and heartfelt appreciation for the love and support that we received on the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. The words of condolences, cards, lowers, food, and prayers offered by family and friends were a great comfort to our family at this time of sorrow. Special thanks to her provider Dalia, With Open Arms Home Health, Rio Rehab and Hernandez Funeral Home.

DPS: Leaving Children in Vehicles Can Be Deadly
Summer temperatures increase risk of vehicular heatstroke The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is warning residents that warmer weather places children at greater risk of injury or death if left unattended in a vehicle. Every year children die from heatstroke after being left in a vehicle or entering a vehicle unnoticed. Such negligence could lead to criminal charges. A child
should never be left unattended in a vehicle. “Tragically, children needlessly die every year because they are left unattended in vehicles,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “Members of the public can do their part to keep kids safe by notifying emergency personnel if they witness a child alone or in distress inside a vehicle – regardless of the weather.

Parents and caregivers should be aware of the dangers.” According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, temperatures inside a car can rise more than 20 degrees in only 10 minutes; and even with an outside temperature of 60 degrees, the temperature inside a car can reach 110 degrees. Leaving windows partially rolled down does not help. In addition, young children are particularly at risk since their bodies heat up faster than an adult. DPS offers the following tips for preventing vehicular heatstroke deaths and injuries: •Teach children not to play in vehicles and make sure to place the keys out of reach when not being used. •Always check the back seats DPS, page 8

ROMA ISD
Continued from Front Page “I’d like to apply the parable of the seed to the place where we are breaking ground here today in La Rosita,” expressed Board Member Dagoberto “Dago” Salinas, at the groundbreaking ceremony. “Only today, the farmer is actually made up of every voter in the crowd. And every voter who due to health related issues or other extraneous events could not join us here. Your hard earned money and tax dollars are what has allowed this ground breaking ceremony to take place. As board members responding to your needs, we have approved the erecting of Y.B. Escobar Elementary here at La Rosita with projections yielding far beyond our wildest dreams. Our desire is that the seed of promise represented by each one of your children walking through these doors graduate from Roma ISD with lives full of knowledge that will fuel their dreams so that they can become visionaries capable of better lives. Who knows how many professions will ensue. We might be educating future farmers, carpenters, doctors, lawyers, business owners, police officers, or educated parents that will build upon what we have started here. You see, ‘to whom much is given much is required’. So as shovels break ground here let the breaking symbolize the tearing down of walls and let’s all - young and old – come together and become that community. Like the well-known African proverb that reads, ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ - let’s lock arms and become a collection of neighborhoods that join alongside our children’s educators to provide a safe and nurturing community. We dedicate this campus so that our sons and daughters inherit something perhaps we as parents or grandparents never had a chance to start with - a strong educational foundation that will help in every level of schooling. Let’s allow the education provided to them within the walls of this future elementary, and all of our other campuses, to serve as wings to personal dreams every student is willing to chase.”

Make the most of Medicare’s drug coverage
By Bob Moos/Southwest public affairs officer for the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Medicare offers prescription drug coverage to everyone with Medicare. It’s a good deal. Medicare subsidizes the outpatient drug benefit, generally paying about 75 percent of the program’s costs. Unless you already have comparable drug coverage through another source, you should consider getting it when you sign up for Medicare’s health care coverage at 65. There are two ways to get drug coverage. If you’re in Medicare’s traditional fee-for-service program, you can purchase a “stand-alone” drug plan from an insurance company. Or, if you decide to buy a private Medicare Advantage health plan, you can choose one that includes drug coverage. To find the “stand-alone” drug plans and the Medicare Advantage health plans with drug coverage available in your area, visit Medicare’s “plan finder” at www. medicare.gov/find-a-plan. You can also call Texas’ Health Information Counseling and Advocacy Program for help at 1-800-252-9240. You’ll see there are significant differences in premiums and deductibles, in the co-payments the plans charge, in the particular drugs they cover and in the pharmacies they use. That’s why it’s important to look at your prescriptions and individual circumstances when comparing plans. Ask yourself: Which plans cover the drugs I take? Which plan gives me the best overall price on all my drugs? Which plans allow me to use the pharmacy I want? Which plans let me get drugs through the mail? What are the plans’ quality ratings, such as for customer service? You’ll discover that many plans place drugs into different “tiers.” The higher the tier, the greater your share of the cost will usually be. If you find that a prescription of yours is in a higher tier, you may want to ask your doctor whether there’s a drug in a lower tier that would work as well. You may also encounter plans
that follow “step therapy.” That means you must first try a lessexpensive drug that’s been proven effective for most people with your condition before you can move up to a costlier drug. However, your doctor can request an exception if the costlier drug is medically necessary. Medicare drug coverage is just like other kinds of insurance – you buy it to protect yourself if and when you need it. Even if you’re not on any prescriptions now, enrolling in a drug plan with a low premium guarantees you’ll have coverage should your health decline and you require medication. After you pick a plan that meets your needs, call the company offering it and ask how to join. You may be able to join online, by phone or by paper application. Don’t be alarmed when you’re asked to provide the number on your Medicare card during the enrollment process. In this case, it’s OK. The plan that’s best for you this year may not be the best next year. If so, you can switch to another plan between Oct. 15 and Dec. 7 each year. Indeed, it’s smart to check all your options every fall to make sure you have the plan that best fits your needs and pocketbook. Your new coverage then begins on Jan. 1. If you’re having difficulty affording medications, you may qualify for the government’s “extra help” program. Your annual income can’t be more than $18,090 if you’re single or $24,360 if you’re married. Also, your resources can’t exceed $13,820 if you’re single or $27,600 if you’re married. Generally, you’ll pay no more than $3.30 for each generic drug and $8.25 for each brand-name prescription in 2017. Thirty-five percent of Texans with a Medicare drug plan get extra help. To apply, visit the Social Security website, at www.socialsecurity.gov/i1020, or call Social Security at 1-800-7721213. People with Medicare have saved hundreds or even thousands of dollars each year thanks to their drug coverage. Be sure to make the most of yours.

For example: leave your bag, lunch or cell phone in the back seat with the child’s car seat. •Call 9-1-1 if you see a child alone in a car, and emergency personnel will provide guidance. •If a child goes missing, open the doors and trunks to every vehicle in the area. Many heatstroke deaths occur when a child accesses a parked car unnoticed. Additionally, don’t forget pet safety. Animals are also susceptible to heat-related injury or death – don’t put your pets in these dangerous conditions.
robotics training and technology at South Texas College For the first time ever, STC partners with FIRST RGV during the camp, enhancing the student learning experience A weekly open house hosted by the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing at South Texas College is the culminating event held by STC’s Robotics and Automation Summer Camp. The event is held every Friday once the weekly camp is finished, and consists of live demonstrations, competitions, and activities for visiting families. The robotics camps aim to introduce students ages eight to 17 to various aspects of automation and real-life robotics technology. “The students have an opportunity to demonstrate and present a week’s worth of projects, as well as the robots they built and programmed, said Carlos Margo, Associate Dean in the Office of Industry Training and Economic Development at South Texas College. “The whole point is to give the families an opportunity to come and check out STC. We invite them to come to our Technology Campus and let them see what it is we have to offer. That’s my way of actually promoting our campus and our robotics labs,” Margo said. “I can tell you that the majority of the members of our community have no idea that we have the capacity to do robotics and automation training here at STC. So in addition to students coming here every day
for a week, we invite the families to come and do this type of open house activities, presentations, demonstrations and just have a good time.” This year’s robotics camp also marks the first time working with FIRST RGV. For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) is a nonprofit organization devoted to helping young people discover and develop a passion for fields in science, technology, engineering, and math STEM. STC now participates in the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), formerly FIRST Vex Challenge (FVC), which is a mid-level robotics competition created for those of an intermediate skill level. “We have different niches of the market, but they have helped us in this partnership,” Margo said. “We did one of their components, the FTC component, which we introduced this summer for the first time, and they helped us on what to purchase as far as the robotics kits, and with the curriculum.” Working with FIRST now gives students an opportunity to form their own robotics teams for competitive events, Margo said. “This is now an opportunity for our students here at the camps to continue in teams with FIRST RGV,” he said. “We have the option to compete. We are not necessarily in any teams per say, but we can definitely continue… if our students want to go back to
FIRST RGV on their own, then they can.” Robotics instructors say the camp is an intensive five day experience that covers the basics of robot design, programming and building. The camp is meant to challenge the students while simultaneously offering a program they can fully immerse themselves in and enjoy. “In my experience, the secret to teaching these students on a really complex subject has been the connection through the activities I have prepared for them,” said Nelson Carrasquero, a robotics instructor at the camp. “It’s also treating them like adults. When you treat them like that, they become empowered. So at the beginning, you have to hold their hands and guide them a bit but then as they camp goes on you have to find a point where you let go. That’s what happens. This all happens in the space of a week. By our fourth day, the kids are already programming on their own.” Summer robotics camps are taking place all summer long. The cost is $175 per student. Children will receive breakfast, lunch, a camp t-shirt as well as a certificate of completion. To register, visit southtexascollege. edu/go/robotics or call 872-6197. STC’s Technology Campus is located at the intersection of Ware Road and Military Highway. For a complete schedule of all camps, please visit https://www. southtexascollege.edu/kidcamps/

Roma High School Symphonic Winds Advances to TMEA 5A State Honor Band Competition
Emergency Management Meeting
The Annual Emergency Management meeting was held at the Roma Fire Department which consisted of being prepared for Hurricane Season that runs from June 1 to November 30th. City of Roma Annex Leaders along with agencies from Roma ISD & Transportation Dept., Customs and Border Protection and the South Texas Development Council Emergency Management got together to plan and prepare for an emergency.
Each year the Roma High School Mighty Gladiator Band competes to advance to state competition, through marching season on odd number years and concert season on even number years. This past spring semester the band prepared for concert season and attended competitions in Austin, San Antonio, and Harlingen. Each time the band is professionally recorded and competes throughout the summer via the live recordings. This past Friday the Roma High School Symphonic Winds was adjudicated in Castroville and earned first place, advancing to the state competition in July! This will be the 8th time our band has advanced to the state level competition. Congratulations to these outstanding students and their parents! Also, we would like to congratulate all bands that advanced from region to area in this very strenuous competition! Good luck at state Roma High School! Grulla Elementary Held Their Career Day Ringgold
Middle School Held Their Incoming 6th Grade Students’ Orientation
Ringgold Middle School welcomed their incoming 6th grade students with an orientation and a tour around the school. We were joined by future RMS Rattlers from John & Olive, North Grammar, Ringgold, La Union, Dr. Ramirez and Ac2e Elementary. The students had an opportunity to see what we have in store for them beginning the new school year. They enjoyed performances by our RMS Cheerleaders, Divas, band, choir, and Mariachi Nuevo Cascabel, as well as a demonstration by our Taekwondo students and their teacher, Mr. Cornelio Miana. Following the orientation the students received a tour of our campus lead by the RMS student council members. The students seemed eager and excited to embark into the new journey that awaits them in Ringgold Middle School! Career Day at Grulla Elementary was a success! It provided the students with an up-close and personal view of a wide variety of jobs. The students were exposed to different career fields such as medical, dental, law enforcement, therapists, firefighters, drug prevention, border patrol, librarians, public relations, military and local businesses. One of the highlights was a presentation by Attorney Jesse Gonzalez who addressed the whole student body about the importance of education and believing in themselves. We are extremely grateful to the individuals who volunteered their morning to share information about their careers and inspire the students. In return they received a Certificate of Appreciation and a small token in acknowledgment of their time and consideration taken to assist and support this event.
