Rep. Cuellar Announces Over $2.2 Million in Federal Funding to Support Border Security Operations in Starr County Funds will be utilized for overtime pay and purchase of new equipment Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) announced $2,276,857 in federal funds for Starr County through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Operation Stonegarden Grant Program (OPSG). The Stonegarden Program increases operational capabilities of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. The funds for Starr County will support law enforcement through funding equipment, over-time pay and support interagency operations. In the FY20 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill, Congressman Cuellar secured $90 million nationwide for the program.
“Border security in Texas requires a variety of strategies and resources as well as coordination on the federal, state, and local level,” said Congressman Cuellar. “These funds will provide muchneeded support for our law enforcement who are working tirelessly to keep our border communities safe. Since 2008, I have secured $19.4 million in OPSG funds for Starr County.” “As the Vice Chair of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Appropriations, I will continue to ensure the men and women of law enforcement have the necessary funding to keep our South Texas communities safe and secure. I want to thank Starr County Sheriff Rene Fuentes, Starr County Judge Eloy Vera,
the Starr County Commissioners Court, as well as all local, state, and federal officers for their commitment to helping to secure our southern border.” The FY20 Operation Stonegarden (OPSG) program provides $90 million to enhance cooperation and coordination among local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in a joint mission to secure the US border. This includes travel corridors in states bordering Mexico and Canada, as well as states and territories with international water borders. Texas received $33 million in FY20 Operation Stonegarden Grant Program, with Texas’ 28th District receiving Help shape our Lindo Rio Grande, if you haven’t filled out your Census 2020, you can do it now at https:// $11.6 million, 35% of that share. my2020census.gov/

He Only Takes The Best God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put his arms around you and whispered, ‘Come with Me.’ With tearful eyes we watched you slowly fade away, although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us... He only takes the best. We would like to thank all our friends, relatives, coworkers, doctors, and nurses for your sincerity and love during our time of sorrow. Your signs of love showed through your beautiful lowers, food, cards, and most important of all, your prayers. We sincerely appreciate everyone’s presence at the funeral home, rosary, and funeral services.

Governor Abbott, HHSC Announce Extension Of Emergency SNAP Benefits During COVID-19 Pandemic On July 2, 2020, Governor Greg Abbott announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) will provide approximately $182 million in emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food benefits for the month of July as the state continues to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. HHSC received federal approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to extend the maximum, allowable amount of SNAP benefits to recipients based on family size. “The extension of these emergency SNAP benefits helps ensure that Texans can provide nutritious food for their families
as the state continues to combat COVID-19,” said Governor Abbott. “Securing access to healthy food in our communities is an important part of our response to this pandemic.” “During this pandemic we must ensure those who need it most can continue providing nutritious food for their families and maintain their health,” said Texas HHS Access and Eligibility Services Deputy Executive Commissioner Wayne Salter. “We’ll continue to make sure Texans can access the services they need as this situation evolves.” More than 950,000 SNAP households will see the additional amount on their Lone Star Card
by July 11. The emergency July allotments are in addition to the $628 million in benefits previously provided to Texans in April, May and June. Administered by HHSC, SNAP is a federal program that provides food assistance to approximately 1.4 million eligible low-income families and individuals in Texas. Texans in need can apply for benefits, including SNAP and Medicaid, at YourTexasBenefits. com or use the Your Texas Benefits mobile app to manage their benefits.

An alligator gar can be huge A few days ago, while having lunch with a friend, our conversation turned to fishing. I’m not much into fishing but, for anybody, alligator gars demand attention. The shape of an alligator gar is distinctive. They’re long, cylindrical fish with a long,
alligator-like snout; the upper jaw has two rows of teeth. The dorsal and ventral fins are opposite each other and far back on the body. The tail fin is rounded. Their color runs from a speckled brown or olive on the top and sides to lighter and near white on the bottom. Their diamond shaped scales, called ganoid, are large, hard and interlocking. Surprisingly, the scales have been used both as arrowheads
and, when decorated, as jewelry. What really catches your attention is a gar’s size! They can be up to 10 feet long and weigh hundreds of pounds. The record is owned by one recently caught
in a commercial fishing net in Mississippi: 327 pounds. It was thought to be 95 years of age. They typically live for decades. They’re carnivores and eat other fish, small waterfowl, mammals who venture into the water, turtles, frogs, carrion --just about anything. Alligator gar spawn from April to June in shallow, flooded, vegetative areas along

slow-moving rivers such as the Mississippi and Rio Grande rivers. Females can deposit as many as 138,000 eggs which are sticky and fertilized by males swimming along-side. It should be noted that the eggs are poisonous. While they’re generally considered rough fish, they are caught commercially and, prepared in several ways, apparently quite palatable. Both because of loss of spawning areas and overfishing, their numbers are generally in decline and there is now a one-per-day bag limit. Their population seems stable in Texas. We’re on the western edge of their range which extends to Florida. If you’re fishing for alligator gar, use sizable live bait, a steel lead and a 40 to 80 pound test line and hang on! However, I don’t believe stories about fishermen being pulled into the river by a big one.

Texas A&M Forest Service encourages everyone to be careful with any activity that may cause a spark. Approximately 90 percent of wildfires are caused by humans and their activities, and Independence Day is one of the top days for reported wildfires. “We encourage everyone to be cautious with outdoor activities,” said Bruce Woods, Texas A&M Forest Service Mitigation and Prevention Department Head. “Dry conditions can quickly turn an unattended spark into a wildfire.” Texas A&M Forest Service and local fire officials are advising the public to be aware of the drying conditions returning this week that may contribute to rapidly growing wildfires. Hot and dry weather conditions reduce the
moisture content in grass and woody vegetation, which increases the potential for wildfire ignitions. Any ongoing green up from recent rainfalls will likely fade. “Continue to help our firefighters limit exposure by preventing wildfires and being safe with your outdoor activities. Remember to do your part, and don’t let a wildfire start,” said Karen Stafford, Texas A&M Forest Service Mitigation and Prevention Department Program Coordinator. To help prevent wildfires, follow these tips: •Follow local burn regulations and be cautious with outdoor activities that may cause a spark. •Avoid parking and idling in tall, dry grass. Catalytic converters can get hot enough to ignite the grass under a vehicle.

•Be sure chains and other metal parts aren’t dragging from your vehicle- they throw sparks. •Avoid placing your grill near flammable vegetation or materials, never leave your grill unattended, and ensure coals are completely extinguished when you are done. •If using firearms, avoid shooting at rocks or metal objects as these can cause sparks, and avoid shooting into dry grass or vegetation. Know your ammunition; tracer and full metal jacket (FMJ) ammunition have a high potential to cause sparks. Visit the Texas A&M Forest Service Wildfire Education & Prevention Facebook page, @ wildfireeducation.prevention, or tfsweb.tamu.edu for more information and tips on how to prevent wildfires.
