Plants that can keep bugs away from outdoor living spaces The Farmer’s Almanac notes that planting these insectrepelling plants around the patio or backyard can help homeowners successfully repel unwanted insects, including mosquitoes.

·Lavender: Lavender is a fragrant plant that adds a pop of purple and has been known to repel mosquitoes, fleas, flies, and moths. ·Basil: Basil can provide the best of both worlds, as it’s been found to repel flies and moths and also makes for a tasty addition to pasta sauces and other dishes. ·Thyme: Also a valuable ingredient to keep in the kitchen, thyme can help keep hungry mosquitoes at bay. · Mint: The Farmer’s Almanac warns that it’s easy to overplant mint, so homeowners should only plant with care and make a concerted effort to prevent overgrowth. Also great in the kitchen, mint has long been considered an effective mosquito repellant.
·Alliums: Like lavender, alliums can add a burst of purple to your patio. And though they aren’t believed to repel mosquitoes, alliums have been found to be helpful against cabbage worms, aphids, carrot flies, and slugs. ·Chrysanthemums: If ants are drawing homeowners’ ire, chrysanthemums may do the trick. These eye-catching flowers also are believed to repel fleas and roaches, among other insects. ·Marigolds: The scent of this awe-inspiring plant is known to repel mosquitoes and other pests. Marigolds also attract insects like ladybugs that are known to consume aphids, which are minute bugs that reproduce rapidly and feed by sucking sap from plants.

MENTAL HEALTH Continued from June 9, 2021, page 6 By Caleigh Findley PhD Candidate Graduate Intern at Men’s Health Network
2. Gender expectations drive stigma towards male self-care. Societal definitions and expectations of masculinity leave little room for male self-expression and vulnerability. Often, any male that fails to don a stone-like exterior may face judgement from his peers for being “weak” or “whimpy”, and endure social othering as a result. These expectations teach males to express emotions in a manner deemed sex-appropriate by their peers— anger. Adults may even rely on this narrow scope to compartmentalize behavioral issues in younger boys, treating the behavior as a character flaw that requires punishment. The reaction to emotional distress in boys teaches them to suffer in silence rather than face potential backlash. Engendering of the silent and strong archetypal male starts as early as childhood. Parents, whether
subconsciously or intentionally, act differently towards their children based on their sex. Studies show that parents speak more often to infant girls, use more emotionally descriptive language, and provide more physical and emotional comfort (i.e., cuddling and response time to crying) for infant girls than boys. In essence, males are not taught the necessary vocabulary for healthy self-expression and are not normalized to displays of affection and emotional support. 3. Men are over three times more likely to commit suicide than women. Two commonly reported statistics for mental health stand in direct opposition to one another. 1. Women are twice as likely to receive a clinical diagnosis of depression than men. 2. Men are over three times more likely to successfully commit suicide than women. Mental health issues are
significantly underreported in men, making it difficult to determine the true prevalence of mental illnesses, like depression, in each sex. Suicide is one tragic outcome of depression, the rate of which would indicate that males may suffer from mental illness more often than previously thought. Several lifestyle and behavioral health factors influence likelihood of suicidality, including occupation. Men working construction and extraction jobs have the highest suicide rates among their sex. Financial, professional, and interpersonal stressors unique to these positions may potentiate mental health symptoms in men, increasing the risk of suicide. Sex differences in expression of mental illness also increase risk of suicide. Men are more likely to isolate themselves when they are suffering, which can delay behavioral health interventions and allow for destructive behaviors,
like substance abuse, to carry on unchecked for a longer period of time. Isolation naturally cuts off one of the most important assets in emotional well-being— support systems. Interpersonal relationships are the first-line of support, without which boys and men are left to seek outside help on their own. Even then, they are faced with a behavioral health system that is not prepared to treat their unique symptoms. 4. Subpar clinical screening strategies for men. In America, only half of the patients diagnosed with a mental illness will seek out treatment. The National Institute of Mental Health reports that in 2019 more females (70.5%) with a serious mental illness received treatment than males (56.5%). Stigma and cultural gender norms exist as major roadblocks on the road to treatment— but what happens when boys and men overcome
these barriers and seek help? The answer, in part, lies within the communication gap between men and the healthcare industry. Gender expectations placed on boys from a young age encourage them to avoid medical treatment in favor of stomaching the symptoms to appear strong. As a consequence, men are less likely to seek out help and adhere to treatment protocols— making them a less ideal target for research study and pharmaceutical marketing. Mental health screening tools are largely geared towards more stereotypically feminine expressions of mental illness, like crying or feeling sad. This does not account for symptoms that are displayed at a higher incidence in men, including substance abuse, anger, and social isolation. Further, pharmaceutical companies frequently develop and market drugs with a specific consumer in mind, one that will utilize these products often and/or for a longer period of time. Underreporting of
mental illness in males and lack of adherence to treatment protocols shifts marketing towards female consumers. These societal and institutional factors lead to detrimental outcomes for men and boys. Lack of direct marketing for men’s mental health only serves to worsen engagement levels in health-related programs and treatment. Inaction on men’s health juxtaposed to open-dialogue and popularized content on women’s health and emotional well-being perpetuates the normalization of mental health as a feminine concept. 5. Male Millennials suffer the outcome of decades-long neglect by the mental health community. Studies show that Millennials are more likely than older generations to report having no or minimal social connections. Depression, substance abuse, and alcohol use disorder rank as the top Millennial health conditions.

Tight grid conditions expected due to high number of forced generation outages Chance of energy emergency The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) is asking Texans to reduce electric use as much as possible today through Friday, June 18. A significant number of forced generation outages combined with potential record electric use for the month of June has resulted in tight grid conditions. Generator owners have reported approximately 11,000 MW of generation is on forced outage for repairs; of that, approximately 8,000 MW is thermal and the rest is intermittent resources. According to the summer Seasonal Assessment of Resource Adequacy, a typical range of thermal generation outages on hot summer days is around 3,600 MW. One MW typically powers around 200 homes on a summer day. “We will be conducting a thorough analysis with generation owners to determine why so many units are out of service,” said
ERCOT Vice President of Grid Planning and Operations Woody Rickerson. “This is unusual for this early in the summer season.” According to generation owners, the number of outages should decrease throughout the week. Wind output for today is expected to be 3,500 to 6,000 MW between 3 and 9 p.m. This is roughly 1,500 MW lower than what is typically available for peak conditions. Wind output is expected to increase as the week goes on. Today’s peak load forecast may exceed 73,000 MW. The peak demand record for June is 69,123 MW set on June 27, 2018 between 4 and 5 p.m. Please take these simple actions to help reduce electric use: · Set your thermostat to 78 degrees or higher – every degree of cooling increases your energy use by six to eight percent. · Turn off lights and pool pumps and avoid using large appliances
like ovens, washing machines and dryers. · If you don’t need something – we are asking you to turn it off and unplug it if possible. Visit the Power to Save website or your electric provider for more ways to conserve. Abbott Takes Final Step to Ensure Affordable Colorectal Cancer Screenings for Texans Gov. Abbott Signs Into Law Lifesaving Cancer Screening Legislation Expected to Save Thousands of Lives On Friday, June 8, 2021, Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law Senate bill 1028 which will ensure Texans can access affordable preventative colorectal cancer screening beginning at age 45. It does this by eliminating cost-sharing for all preventative colorectal cancer screening tests for people 45 and older, even if they are performed as a follow up to a positive less invasive screening. The bill takes effect September 1, 2021. “We are thrilled that our lawmakers have heard from their many constituents who have been touched by cancer and voted to remove barriers to affordable screening for colorectal cancer,” said James Gray, Texas Senior Director of Government Relations for ACS CAN. “Being voted out of the legislature unanimously and on the heels of the United States Preventive Services Task Force updated guidelines is yet another example on how Texas continues to lead in the fight against cancer through strong, evidence-based policy. If Texans received regular
screenings for colorectal cancer, thousands of future deaths could potentially be prevented.” A broad coalition of public health groups, including the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) and Fight Colorectal Cancer (Fight CRC), have spent the last year urging lawmakers to pass this bill. In 2021, it’s estimated that nearly over 11,000 Texans will receive a diagnosis of colorectal cancer and an estimated 4,000 will lose their battle with the disease – but by increasing access to screening, advocates hope to decrease these numbers. “I lost my mom to colorectal cancer when she was just 51 years old,” said Alex Hernandez, caregiver and Fight CRC Advocate. “Unfortunately, my story is not unique. Expanding access to colorectal cancer screenings to allow Texans to receive timely screenings will save lives. I’m proud of all the lawmakers who championed this effort to remove barriers many Texans face in accessing crucial screenings.” “Despite being one of the most preventable cancers, colorectal cancer remains the second leading
cause of cancer death in Texas,” noted Allison Rosen, ACT Lead Volunteer at ACS CAN and colorectal cancer survivor. “This law removes a major financial barrier that has kept thousands of Texans from receiving their recommended screenings, which comes with the cost of poorer health outcomes and too many lives lost. On behalf of all families touched by cancer, we at ACS CAN, including cancer survivors like myself from across the state, thank Gov. Abbott for signing this lifesaving bill into law.” Colorectal cancer is one of the few cancers that can be prevented if caught early and it is more important now than ever that Texas remove barriers and increase access to this life-saving screening. “Fight Colorectal Cancer is grateful to all the incredible colorectal cancer advocates in Texas who worked tirelessly to see this critical legislation passed by the legislature,” said Anjee Davis, President of Fight CRC. “We applaud Rep. John Smithee and Sen. Joan Huffman for their leadership and prioritizing increasing access to colorectal cancer screening.”
