ACE PROGRAM HONORS DAD
YOU ARE A HERO!
This week was a very special and signiicant week as students in the ACE program @ Grulla Middle School honored their fathers. All Fathers were welcomed by Mrs. Maribel Villarreal- ACE Site – Coordinator and the ACE staff. Fathers were given a light brunch and an opportunity to sit and chat and be together . After this relaxing moment the students broke up into teams for a basket ball tournament and a jigsaw competition. Prizes were given to all participants and winners . Father’s Day is considered extremely important for it acknowledges the contribution of fathers to individual families and to societies as large. Besides the observance of Father’s Day, it provides children an opportunity to express love and respect for their fathers. The sentiment goes a long way in strengthening father-child relationship and consequently in the emotional development of a child.

VASE ART Continued from Front Page
shown at Glassell Junior School in Houston from May through August, the Texas Education Agency in Austin from September to October and the Texas Art Education Association Conference in November. This year more than 32,000 entries were submitted to the VASE competition, which is run by the Texas Art Education Association, and out of that only 1,600 works advanced to the state event. Out of the state winners, only 150 receive the gold seal medallion, which is the highest ranking award that can be earned in state-level competition. This year Roma High advanced to state with 13 students and 14 works of art, resulting in the four Gold Seal Medallions. Additionally, Roma High Senior Ana Mariela Perez earned a scholarship of $500 and one student, Melissa Garcia, actually had two pieces selected
for state competition! “I am so very proud of our exceptional Roma High School Art Program, which continues to shine above and beyond every high school in the Rio Grande Valley,” said Marissa Belmontes, Roma High School Principal. “We have, without a doubt, some of the finest faculty anywhere with a great leader in Gabriela Gonzalez, who continues to push the program and her students to explore new ground and to try to reach their personal best. She cares deeply for the students and they in turn are always working hard to develop and hone their skills. The whole staff at Roma High and the district administration congratulates these students and the faculty for their hard work! We are so proud to say ‘we knew them when’ and have no doubt that they will go far with these tremendous skills!”

Grulla Middle School and Grulla High School Jazz Bands Performed at Grulla Elementary
Grulla Middle School Band and Grulla High School Jazz Band performed for 5th grade students at Grulla Elementary. The students were very excited and eager to not only meet but also to learn about the different instruments that are available if they choose to take band courses in the middle school. It was also great to see how many previous Grulla Elementary students are currently performing in the band. Thanks to the Band Directors and staff that made this event a great success.
Walking for a Healthier You! Energized students from Dr. Mario Ramirez Elementary after Walking Across Texas – Students Fitness Promoters: Principal Dr. Jorge Guzman, Coach Danny Saenz, Learn Grow Eat Go Teacher Carmen Saenz, Hector – Texas A&M AgriLife Extension.
The Starr County 2017 Walk Across Texas program was carried out this Spring with residents making significant commitments to getting healthy, comments Yolanda Morado, Starr County Extension Agent-FCS. The Walk Across Texas program is an eight week (team of eight, school classes, or individuals) who walk 830 miles across a map of Texas. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service who sponsors the program state-wide reports that there are some impressive numbers where people who do the eight weeks program adopt lifelong walking commitments. Our Starr County walkers walked a total of 134,611 miles and there were 2,363 participants. There were six schools that
participated and one youth group who walked a total of 2,394 miles. The four Rio Grande City Schools were: AC2e Elementary, Grulla Middle School, Dr. Mario Ramirez Elementary and Ringgold Elementary. The Roma Schools that participated were Veterans Memorial Elementary and RT Barrera Elementary. The top 3 schools with the most miles were1st place RT Barrera Elementary, AC2e Elementary 2nd place, and 3rd place Dr. Mario Ramirez Elementary. The youth group that participated was the Boys & Girls Club of Rio Grande City. In the adult category there were 14 teams and 135 walkers who walked 13,221 miles in the 8 week period. The 3 top teams were Roma Police Department with 1st
place, City of Rio Grande City 2nd place and 3rd place was Roma Fire Department. The top walkers were Priscilla Perales, 555.49 miles, Omar Garza 490.54 miles and Lyzette Pena 472.65 miles. Walking is so beneficial and it is more than just a way to get around. Walking at “any” speed is a way to improve your fitness, burn calories, and reduce countless health risks of inactivity. Exercise is important in order to keep your body and mind in shape. It allows you to enjoy more activities and reduce the risk of problems as you get older. You will get fewer back aches and pains or other effects from a deteriorating body. In other words walking can help you live longer, and have a healthier body.

In honor of National Poetry Month, Ringgold Middle School held a Poetry Night at the Lopez-Tijerina Courtyard in Rio Grande City. Students, parents and staff celebrated the joy, expressiveness, and pure delight of poetry. Special thanks to Mrs. Dolores Flores and staff who helped organize such an enjoyable event. Starr County Judge Eloy Vera presented the key to a brand new home to Mr. and Mrs. Jose A. AmeriCorps and STC seeking volunteers to assist with LEGAL NOTICE GED and literacy training for low-income students Application has been made AmeriCorps in collaboration with South Texas College is seeking participants for its Continuing Education volunteer program who will assist with GED, ESL, computer, workplace and literacy initiatives. AmeriCorps VISTA, working in tandem with the Continuing Professional and Workforce Education (CPWE) program at STC has begun the year-long program in an effort to fight literacy and assist low-income communities in the region. “We want to let the community know about the volunteer initiative. We need volunteers to help with these classes,” said Alyssa Garcia, VISTA Coordinator of Basic Skills Volunteers. “What I am focused on right now is the literacy movement, and helping people climb out of poverty. By helping these individuals obtain their GED, we can help them find a better wage job. This is especially true for Hispanics who are at the poverty level. Some work fulltime and they are still considered low income. But once these people get their GED, they will be able to get a better job and have more opportunities as a whole.” AmeriCorps engages more than 80,000 Americans in intensive service each year at 21,600 unique sites including nonprofits, schools, public agencies, and community and faith-based groups across the country. Since the program’s founding in 1994, more than 1 million AmeriCorps members have contributed more than 1.4 billion hours in service across America while tackling pressing problems and mobilizing more than 2.3 million volunteers for the organizations they serve. “Right now I am based out of the CPWE offices, and I am assisting them with this remarkable journey towards enhancing literacy in South Texas.” Garcia said. “The sooner we get these volunteers the better, so we can begin to serve the community and fight poverty
together. Getting involved with this initiative will allow volunteers to bring a halt to the 36 million adults in the United States that lack basic work skills like literacy, and help the citizens of South Texas gain the skills they need in order

Fire ants are dangerous R e d imported fire ants (RIFA) are becoming widespread and they both alter ecosystems and threaten people and other species. Attempts to control them and their effects are costing millions. Their invasion is serious in many ways. The fire ants first entered the U. S. during 1918 in Mobile, Alabama, probably in shipping crates or ballast. They’ve now spread throughout much of our southern states. Freezing winters protect northern states. Allow me to explain some ways to identify Solenopsis invicta, the fire ant. As typical of ants they have six legs, a pair of antennae, and three body parts --- head, thorax, and abdomen (called the gaster). They’re tiny ants, only 1/8 to 5/16 inch. Notably, the head and thorax are a medium rust color while
the abdomen is darker and blackish. Two other identifying characteristics require a hand lens. At the end of each antenna is a small knob; it has two segments. The thorax and abdomen are connected by a thin petiole which also has two segments or nodes. Another means of identification involves the mound that a colony builds. It can be a foot high or higher and have numerous entry holes. Most ants build small mounds with a single entry.
If you encounter a fire ant colony be very careful. They’re like Africanized bees, very aggressive and sting. The stinger injects an alkaloid venom called solenopsin which is very painful and in some people may cause an anaphylaxis reaction and require immediate medical treatment! They can kill pets and other small animals. As with most ants, they have a caste system in the colony. There will be one or several queens capable of producing 1,600 eggs per day for perhaps as many as 7 years! A colony may have a
population of 250,000. There are also drones, males, whose only duty is mating after which they die. There are also workers and soldiers with the usual duties. Fire ant foods consist of young plant parts and seeds. Prevention or eradication of fire ants often involves the spread of poisons around the edge of a colony or broadcast over large areas. There is a problem with that. Poisons also kill other species of ants. Our horned lizard is now a threatened species because its necessary food supply, harvester ants, are also being poisoned. Fire ants also directly attack and drive out harvester ants.
Natural controls are also being tried. Tiny, hump-backed phorid flies are being introduced. They kill fire ants and in time may alleviate our problem. As they say, time will tell. In the mean time, avoid these aggressive, venomous ants, protect our indigenous ants if you can and enjoy our natural environment.
