Rep. Cuellar Announces Over $317,244 in Federal Funds to Hire Police Officers in Rio Grande City Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) announces $317,244 in federal funds to hire three police officers for the Rio Grande City Police Department. These funds, awarded through the Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Service (COPS) Hiring Program, will be used to bring in new officers that will increase man power and allow the Department to start new community-policing initiatives. “I share our nation’s shock and outrage over the death of George Floyd. However, calls to defund our country’s police are impractical and dangerous. Our families, friends, and neighbors are safe because of our nation’s law enforcement. Improving our policing system, not defunding or disassembling it, is the best way to prevent further tragedies from happening again,” said Congressman Cuellar. “That’s why I worked hard to help secure funding for the COPS program for our City. This critical investment will extend far beyond the creation of law enforcement jobs. It will strengthen
relationships between officers and our community, improving public safety and keeping law enforcement officers on the beat.” “As a senior Appropriator, I will continue to fund programs that create effective and professional federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. I want to thank Mayor Joel Villarreal, City Manager Alberto Perez, City Council, and Police Chief Noe Castillo for their dedication to making our city safer. I also want to thank the police men and women who put their lives on the line every day to protect us,” Congressman Cuellar added. “The Rio Grande City Police Department is very excited to have been chosen as one of the COPS 2020 Grant Recipients. Our community, and agency will greatly benefit from the added personnel in fast growing community. COPS Grants have been a part of the Rio Grande City Police Department since the beginning, and will continue to be part of the next generation of an evolving police force. I want to thank Congressman
Cuellar for all his support,” said Police Chief Noe Castillo This funding will be used to provide the Department with the opportunity to start new community projects such as a Neighborhood Watch. These projects will better enhance the relationship between the police and the community. As a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, Congressman Cuellar helped secure $235,000,000 for the COPS Hiring Program in the final spending bill. The COPS Hiring Program works to reduce crime and advance public safety through community policing by providing direct funding for the hiring of career law enforcement officers. In addition to providing financial support for hiring, the program provides funding to law enforcement to enhance local community policing strategies and tactics. Lastly, the COPS Hiring Program assists law enforcements ability to maintain sufficient sworn personnel levels to keep communities safe.

Starr County Health Authority’s Report Dr. Jose Vazquez, We have tested around 4000 people in Starr County since the beginning of the pandemic. Our numbers were well controlled as far as we had the authority to enforce the recommended mitigation measures. Now, it is up to our citizens to self restrain and exercise precautions. The increase number of cases as well as the first few fatalities in our County is a reminder that this pandemic is still very much active and still a significant threat to our well-being. Stay strong and exercise common sense. Together, we will prevail.
Juntos, prevaleceremos.

Early summer drying could indicate a severe wildfire season in Texas Drought conditions in the western Plains and early drying across the state have led to an increase in wildfire activity and an early start to the summer wildfire season. Most of the state is trending three to four weeks ahead of typical early summer drying, and the rainfall outlook over the next six weeks is not anticipated to be enough to reverse this trend. Wildfire analysts with Texas A&M Forest Service report that Texas could experience a severe summer wildfire season. “The dryness we are currently seeing across portions of the state is, generally, what we would be experiencing in mid- to late July,” said Brad Smith, Texas A&M Forest Service Predictive Services Department Head. “The drought that will carry over from the spring into the summer and the emerging drought that is developing in June have initiated an early start to the summer fire season. Early summer drying in June also introduces the possibility of experiencing a severe latesummer fire season.” Under these conditions, state officials are tracking an increased number of wildfire ignitions occurring across Texas. Since Tuesday, June 9, Texas A&M Forest Service and local fire departments have responded to 90 wildfires that burned a total of 21,692 acres. Many of the recent wildfires are attributed to equipment use, welding, debris burning and roadside starts. “Texas is experiencing an uptick in wildfire activity across most of the state, and it’s easy to think that a wildfire won’t impact you until you see the smoke on the horizon,” said Kari Hines, Texas A&M Forest Service Firewise
Coordinator. “Now is the time to prepare your house and property to make them wildfire resilient. Create an evacuation plan for your family that includes pets and livestock. Look for the buildup of
dead and dry vegetative material around your house, the driveway, and other important buildings, as this is where embers can gather and start fires.” Successfully preparing for
a wildfire requires everyone to take personal responsibility for protecting themselves, their families and their properties. Texas A&M Forest Service encourages Texans to take the
following steps around their homes today to reduce the risk of wildfire: 1. Clean out gutters of debris. 2. Mow and water lawns. 3. Move firewood a minimum of 30 feet from homes. 4. Remove anything
stored under decks or porches. 5. Make sure home addresses are visible from the road. If a wildfire is spotted, contact local authorities immediately.

Governor Abbott Provides Update On COVID-19 Response, Urges Texans To Follow Guidelines
On June 22, 2020, Governor Greg Abbott provided an update on Texas’ continued response to COVID-19. The Governor discussed several steps the state is taking to mitigate the spread of the virus in recent weeks—including increasing enforcement of health and safety regulations, rapidly increasing testing in hot spots, and working with hospitals throughout the state to ensure they have the
ability to treat Texans who test positive for COVID-19. The Governor urged Texans and Texas businesses to follow the Minimum Standard Health Protocols established by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 as Texas continues to safely and strategically open the economy. “COVID-19 is now spreading at an unacceptable rate in the state of Texas, and it must be corralled,” said Governor Abbott. “We have several strategies to reduce the spread without shutting Texas back down, but it is up to all of us to do our part to protect ourselves
and others. We need all Texans to follow the safety protocols developed by our team of medical experts, including staying home if you are sick or at risk, sanitizing your hands, social distancing, and wearing face coverings or masks. COVID-19 hasn’t gone away, but neither has our ability to slow the spread of it. Texans have shown that we don’t have to choose between jobs and health—we can have both. We can protect lives while also restoring livelihoods. Together, we will keep Texans safe and we will keep our state open for business.” Texans should visit open. texas.gov to learn more about the Minimum Standard Health Protocols and how they can help the Lone Star State slow the spread of COVID-19.
