God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put his arms around you and whispered, ‘Come with Me.’ With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you fade away, although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, your tender hands at rest. God took you home to prove to us... He only takes the best.

Did you know? Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones that occurs when a person loses too much bone, produces too little bone or both. Though the disease is most often associated with women over 50, anyone can suffer from osteoporosis, which weakens bones and can make them more susceptible to breaks. Exercise is a great way for men and women to build and maintain strong bones in an attempt to prevent the onset of osteoporosis. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, weight-bearing exercises can help build and maintain bone density. But the NOF notes that men and women who have suffered broken bones due to osteoporosis or those at risk of such breaks may need to avoid high-impact

weight-bearing exercises, which include dancing, hiking, jogging, and jumping rope, among others. For those whose physicians who suggest they avoid high-impact weight-bearing exercises, lowimpact weight-bearing exercises can help them strengthen their bones. Such exercises may involve low-impact aerobics and using cardiovascular machines, such as elliptical trainers, stairstep machines and treadmills. Additional exercises that can benefit men and women looking to prevent or combat osteoporosis can be found at www.nof.org.

He plans to attend Texas A&M University in Kingsville and major in Agribusiness or a related field of agricultural study. He states, “I

have a sincere love of ranching and have learned to appreciate the cattle and ranching industry as an important part of life.” He adds, “Agriculture is in the hands of future leaders like me. It is the backbone of the economy of any given country. As long as there are people, agriculture will be prioritized as one of the most influential industries in our nation. I have had the opportunity to grow in knowledge and skills that will remain with me for a lifetime.” Gabriella Y. Perez, the daughter of Gilberto Perez III and Maria Teresa Perez of Roma, is a 2019 graduate of Roma High School. She plans to attend Texas State University in San Marcos and major in Communication Sciences and Disorders. She states, “Agriculture has taught me to appreciate my surroundings and all the joy it brings rather than taking any of it for granted. Taking care of animals and plants from a young age has taught me discipline, responsibility, leadership and motivation to work hard for what I believe and enjoy doing. Being a proud member of the Roma Jr. FFA and now the Roma FFA has enabled me to learn the importance of sportsmanship, dependability and dedication, thanks to my involvement and great experiences at the Starr County Fair and the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show.” Nicholas Delgado, Jr., the son of Nicholas and Christina Delgado of Delmita, is a 2019 graduate of San Isidro High School. He plans to attend the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and major in Biology. He states, “Agriculture is a living, breathing community of people across the nations who simply love what they do for a

living, whether it is in a tractor or even in an office. As with many industries, there is something about agriculture that settles deep down in your soul and even if you leave it, you will forever be impacted by your time involved in it. My time here has truly allowed agriculture to form deep roots in my heart.” Joshua Garcia, the son of Jose Luis and Sanjuanita Garcia of Rio Grande City, is a 2019 graduate of Rio Grande City High School. His plans are to attend Texas A&M University Kingsville and major in civil engineering. He states, “Since the early 20th century, agriculture has been a great economic foundation for my home city and a skill developer for myself. Having both sides of my family with agricultural backgrounds, telling me stories of how they would work long days in the different types of crops such as cilantro, watermelon, cabbage, squash, tomatoes, oranges, onions, and grapefruits. Teaching me to appreciate every step from plowing the ground to softening the soil, planting the seed, to finally seeing the plant grow and producing its beautiful fruit… agriculture has impacted my life in many ways, from teaching me how our city makes profit from agriculture, to my grandparents teaching me how to appreciate the process from start to devouring their delicious produce.” Marco Antonio Garza, the son of Jorge and Blanca Garza of Rio Grande City, is a 2019 graduate of San isidro High School. He plans to attend the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and major in business management. He states, “Agriculture has been a huge part of my life because my father

was a farmer…for the majority of my childhood, he farmed, so you could often find me on the farm with my dad in the afternoons, weekends, and summers. I saw my dad work very hard to ensure his crops would make it through the season…With this, I learned very quickly how important agriculture was to our family as well as to the community’s needs.” Mayelie A. Gutierrez, the daughter of Sonia P. Trevino and Juan Raul Barrera, Jr. of Rio Grande City, is a 2019 graduate of RGCCISD Preparatory for Early College High School. Her plans are to attend the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and major in biology as a pre-medical student. She states, “Agriculture has impacted my life in a very positive and eye-opening way. Since I started being an active member in my county fair, I hadn’t realized how much agriculture is involved in our everyday lives. By volunteering with my 4-H to clean up highways, clean up the fairgrounds, and by taking care of an endless amount of animals, I have been able to recognize just how valuable agriculture is to everyone in their lives.” Luis Omar Pena, the son of Noe and Yvette Pena of Rio Grande City, is a 2019 graduate of Rio Grande City High School. He plans to attend Tulsa Welding School in Houston to achieve a career choice of welding. He states on how agriculture has had an impact on his life, “It has shown me how to maintain a ranch on a daily basis. Every day is a new learning process on feeding the animals, providing water, and coming up with ideas for the ranch.”

BE SAFE. DRIVE SMART. Summertime in Texas is the height of travel season, which means scores of people will be hitting the highways for long road trips, state park visits or lazy lake days. Traveling long distances can put drivers at risk of falling asleep, getting distracted or becoming impatient. The TxDOT is reminding motorists to stay alert and avoid drowsy or aggressive driving while behind the wheel this summer. Be safe as you travel the state’s highways during the busy summer driving season. •Always obey posted speed

limits and drive a safe speed for traffic, road and weather conditions. •Be extra cautious driving through road construction or maintenance work zones. •When approaching a stopped emergency vehicle, tow truck or TxDOT vehicle with amber or blue flashing lights on the side of the road, move over a lane. If moving over is not possible, slow to 20 mph below the posted speed limit when you approach a stopped vehicle. •Keep a safe distance behind the vehicle in front of you. •Drive with your lights on so

you are more visible to oncoming traffic. •Watch for motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians. Take precautions to prevent drowsy driving, especially when traveling long distances. •Never drink alcohol or take sedating medications before driving. •Get plenty of rest before your trip. •Schedule breaks every two hours or 100 miles. Rest for 15 to 20 minutes during each stop. •Avoid driving between midnight and 6 a.m. •Take advantage of the state’s

Safety Rest Areas and Travel Information Centers. •For long trips, travel with a companion who can help you stay alert and share the driving. Be patient and avoid driving aggressively or engaging with those who do. •Plan ahead to allow time for delays. Traffic congestion can be a problem almost anywhere. •Don’t tailgate or flash your lights at another driver. •Remember, the left lane is for passing only. If you’re in the left lane and someone wants to pass, move over and let the driver by. •Keep your emotions in check and focus on your own driving. •If you encounter an aggressive driver, don’t engage. Give angry drivers plenty of room, avoid eye contact and if you’re concerned for your safety, call 9-1-1.

Did you know? Extracurricular activities have long been touted as a great way for prospective college students to bolster their college applications. Students may be surprised to learn just what participation in such activities may suggest to college admissions officers. According to The Princeton Review®, scattered involvement in an extracurricular activity, regardless of what that activity is, may give college admissions officers a poor impression of applicants, suggesting a student lacks the commitment and passion of applicants who were more deeply involved in their extracurricular activities. While students should not continue to participate in an activity they don’t enjoy, they may benefit from spending more time researching certain activities to ensure they choose one they’re

willing to commit to long-term. Such a commitment suggests to admissions officers that a student is willing to go through the ups and downs that typically come with engaging oneself in an activity. An ability to handle those ups and downs without giving up suggests students will be able to handle the ups and downs of college life as well. The Princeton Review® also notes that students who choose to work instead of participating in an extracurricular activity should not downplay such decisions on their applications, particularly if they were helping to support their families. The decision to help support a family demonstrates character and can indicate maturity to college admissions officers. Each of those traits can bolster an applicant’s candidacy.

NOVENA “Miraculous Prayer” Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it, Dear Jesus, and place it within your own heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail.

Six Heat Hacks to Stay Safe This Summer at Texas State Parks Last year, Texas’ temperatures soared to record highs and staff at more than 40 Texas Parks and Wildlife Department sites handled 134 incidents relating to heat-related illnesses in humans and pets. On the eve of the official start of summer, TPWD experts are sharing their top six heat hacks for staying safe in the outdoors during the blistering Texas heat. Here are the top six heat hacks recommended for park visitors: •HydrateIt’s important to drink at least 16 ounces of water every hour in the heat to replenish your body and prevent dehydration. Don’t forget to bring enough for your fourlegged family members too. •Block the Rays- Apply a

generous amount of sunscreen or sunblock before heading outdoors. Be sure to reapply every couple of hours, and after swimming or sweating. •Dress Smart- Wear light, loose-fitting, breathable clothing; a hat, correct shoes, sunscreen and wet bandanas to keep you cool while in the sun. For pets, protect paws against blistering by hitting the trails during cooler times of the day when the ground isn’t hot or by putting booties on pets to help shield paws from the hot ground. Touch the pavement or ground with the back of your hand. If you cannot hold it there for five seconds, the surface is too hot for your dog’s paws. •Stay Salty- Food helps keep up energy and replace salt lost

from sweating. Eating snacks such as jerky, granola, trail mix, tuna and dried fruit is a fantastic way to nourish your body while on the trails. •Buddy System- Two brains are better than one. It’s beneficial to have someone with you in hot conditions so you can look after each other on the trail. With high temperatures hitting Texas, heatrelated illnesses are common and having a friend around to help recognize the early symptoms can save you from getting sick. •Plan Ahead- Study the map and have it with you. Average hikers move at 2 miles per hour, so allow yourself plenty of time to avoid hiking in the heat of the day. Make sure to rest in a cool or shaded area to recover from the

The hooded orioles are back They’re back from spending the winter down south and they’re gorgeous! You’ll never see a more luxuriant, vibrant orange than that of the fresh, spring plumage on a male hooded oriole. It’s made even more so by the contrasting jet black feathers of the wings, tail, upper back and throat. The slightly larger and

similarly marked Altamira orioles remain with us all year but only a few hooded orioles, which inhabit both coasts of Mexico all year, travel into Texas and our other southwestern states for the warmer months. We’re thankful some do. To distinguish between the two species, look at their shoulders. On the Altamira you’ll see an orange streak while on the hooded you’ll see a white streak. The hooded are also smaller, slimmer birds. Hooded orioles are about 8 inches long. Their bills are thin, sharp pointed and slightly downcurved. The females are plain dull yellowish-orange overall, with perhaps a hint of olive, and

have dusky wings. Their diet consists of insects, berries, and nectar from flowers, although they can’t hover like hummingbirds. They love drinking from hummingbird feeders and, especially, the newly available oriole nectar feeders. In my bird feeding area, I’ve also discovered that orioles, along with most other birds, love marshmallows! I’ve purchased wire cages designed for suet blocks but load them with jumbo marshmallows. The hooded orioles love them. Most of you know that Altamira orioles build long, hanging nests. Hooded orioles also build hanging nests but they aren’t nearly as long. During nesting season, which is upon us, we leave stringy, fibrous nesting material scattered about on branches. The orioles appreciate the donated building material.

In recent years the Texas population of hooded orioles has declined sharply, probably due to nest predation by cowbirds. Let’s do what we can to encourage the orioles and enjoy watching them.
