The City of Rio Grande City is set to host its official 4th of July themed event this weekend at the Basilio Villarreal Municipal Park. According to event organizers, this year’s Freedom Fest will span over 3 days starting Friday, June 29, with a Team Roping Competition at the Sheriff’s Posse Arena. The bulk of the festivities are set to take place on Saturday, June 30, including a car show, a cook-off competition, a softball

tournament, live concerts, and a massive fireworks display. The softball championship tournament will take place all-day Sunday, July 1. For the past 3 years, the event has been almost exclusively organized by the Rio Grande City Tourism Dept. This year, however, other parties including local Grammy nominated band Solido stepped up to cohost the event, helping it grow from a one day event to a three-day festival.

Set to perform on stage on Saturday is Eliseo Robles y Los Barbaros del Norte, Elida Reyna, Las Fenix, and Grupo Solido. Admission for all 3 days of Freedom Fest is absolutely Free, with the option of purchasing VIP PIT Passes available. The Rio Grande City Basilio Villarreal Park is located at 1473 Stephen Saenz St. For more information about this event, residents are encouraged to call 956-487-0672.

DPS Urges Texans to Take Safety Precautions This Summer

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is reminding Texans to take extra precautions and stay safe. Rising temperatures and increased travel can create additional safety concerns over the summer, particularly with extreme temperatures increasing the risk of heat-related injuries or deaths. Despite rain that has cooled much of the state last week, heat indices have already hit 100 degrees and above in many parts of Texas, and will continue to do so throughout the summer. “Safety is always our first priority at DPS, and summertime presents our state with unique challenges,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “School is out, families are traveling, and temperatures are on the rise. Everyone can do their part to prevent senseless tragedies this

summer by staying hydrated in the heat and using extra caution, as well as obeying traffic laws while on the road.” Rising summer temperatures create greater safety concerns, including the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If you start feeling ill, immediately move to a cooler area and slowly drink fluids. Be sure to stay hydrated throughout the day and, if possible, avoid outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the afternoon. Warmer weather also places children and pets at greater risk of injury or death if left unattended in a vehicle. Temperatures inside a car can rise more than 20 degrees in only 10 minutes. Even with an outside temperature of 60 degrees, the temperature inside a car can reach 110 degrees,

according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Leaving windows partially rolled down does not help. Children and pets should never be left unattended in a vehicle. (For additional information, visit the DPS website.) Additionally, with school out for the summer, drivers should be aware of children playing near roadways and use caution while driving in neighborhoods, as well as near parks and playgrounds. As road travel increases this summer, DPS reminds everyone to stay vigilant and practice safe driving habits. DPS offers the following tips for enhancing safety on our roads throughout the summer: • Do not drink and drive. Make alternate travel plans if you are consuming alcohol.

• Slow down – especially in bad weather, construction areas, heavy traffic and unfamiliar areas. • Eliminate distractions while driving, including the use of mobile devices. Texas law prohibits using a portable wireless device to read, write or send an electronic message unless the vehicle is stopped. • Buckle up everyone in the vehicle – it’s the law. • Slow down or move over for police, fire, EMS and Texas Department of Transportation vehicles and tow trucks stopped on the side of the road with emergency lights activated – it’s the law. Also, show the same courtesy to fellow drivers stopped along the road. • Drive defensively, as increases in travel may present additional challenges. • Don’t drive fatigued – allow plenty of time to reach your destination. • If you see a road hazard or if you observe anything suspicious, report it to the nearest law enforcement agency. • Before your trip begins, make sure your vehicle is properly maintained and always double check to make sure all cargo is secure. • Monitor weather and road conditions wherever you are traveling. In the event of inclement weather, use extra caution on roadways and be aware of your surroundings. For road conditions in Texas, visit https://drivetexas.org.

Did you know?

Millions of students participate in online learning each year, and that number continues to grow, according to the Sloan Consortium. A growing number of colleges and universities now offer distance learning courses, and some students find it possible to complete their degrees without ever visiting campus. Online learning enables students to take classes according to their own schedules and complete coursework without having to commute to campus. This is particularly attractive to students who work full time or have families. Convenience is not the only reason to consider online education. According to a 2009 meta study from the United States Department of Education, students who took online courses performed better than those taking the same courses through traditional instruction. Students who mixed online learning with traditional classroom work performed even better.

The Railroad Reaches Rio Grande City in 1925

You’re in good hands.

On June 15, 1925, the first passenger train rolled into Rio Grande City over the newly constructed line of the Rio Grande City Railroad. The special event and dedication included a christening ceremony, where a levy of attractive young women and children took part. When the train came to a complete stop, a beautiful floral wreath was placed above the head light and a bottle filled with water from the Rio Grande River was broken on the prow. The event was sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. James S. Monroe. A barbecue and rodeo were features of the day. It was estimated that more than 1,200 people attended the event on that day. Visitors from around the state joined in the festivities as well. Prominent Railroad officials included W. T. Eldridge, President of the Sugarland Railroad, H.P. Safford, Executive Vice President of Gulf Coast Line and International Great Northern, W.G. Choate, General Manager, Gulf Coast Line, builders of the Rio Grande City Railroad Co. and others.

Did you know? The terms “college” and “university” are often used interchangeably, but there are distinctions between the terms. Specifications may differ based on where a school is located, but generally speaking colleges offer only associate’s and bachelor’s degrees while universities offer those degrees as well as graduate degrees. Colleges may be private institutions that tend to have small student bodies, while universities boast more sizable enrollments. Universities also tend to be home to vast libraries and may feature teaching schools with major research projects being conducted at

given times. According to the education resource CollegeRank, in order for a college to receive university status, it must first meet a few requirements. A university has the financial resources to support its graduate and professional programs and has the facilities and equipment required to meet the needs of students in those programs. The school also must be accredited and, depending on the location, possibly licensed and incorporated within that area. Despite the differences between colleges and universities, many students find they can achieve their academic goals whether they attend a college or university.

Featherleaf desertpeonies are endemic to Texas Here’s a Texas endemic with which few people are familiar: featherleaf desertpeony. Botanists call it Acourtia runcinata. I discovered one in bloom several years ago as I was just wandering through the brush to see what might be there. It’s a rather attractive, modest sized plant with lobed leaves edged with widely spaced pointed teeth. The flowers are pink to lavenderpink with many strap shaped petals and periodically bloom from March through August.

your friends with your s u p e r b erudition. W h i l e they’re called featherleaf desertpeonies, they belong to the aster family and are found not in deserts but in undisturbed, brushy, calcareous lands from central Texas down to the Rio Grande Valley. They’re perennials and grow widely dispersed in colonies that usually number fewer than 30 plants. I’ve successfully transplanted a couple of desertpeonies, and, while they’re not showy, profuse bloomers, they do make interesting and unusual additions to a flower garden. Casual hikes through the brush have endless wonders to be discovered and also provide mental and physical benefits. Try it, you might like it.

The flower scapes are less than a foot in height with one and occasionally two or three flowers each. I discovered one of the plant’s most unusual features some months later. I found one growing at the edge of a gully and about to be washed out by the next rain or two. To save it, I decided to transplant it. What I found was quite unexpected. The foliage was attached to a tough, rather thin, single root which led several inches down into the soil where I found a large, bulbous storage tuber. It was like a beet or turnip but with a thin, lengthy root connecting the foliage with the deep, underground tuber. The technical name for such a root is fasciculated tuberous-fusiform root.
