Five Ways you can save water inside your home this summer You might often assume that the heat of summer will lead to more water consumption. That’s because lawns, gardens, and even swimming pools demand a lot of it. But the truth is during summer even indoor water costs are still 50 to 70 percent of your monthly water bill. Take Care of Texas suggests the following tips for reducing your indoor water use this summer comments Yolanda Morado, Starr County Extension Agent. Replace your toilet. If you have an old water hog of a toilet, it uses a lot more water than it really needs to. A newer, more efficient toilet you can save 13,000 gallons of water a year. That’s about $110 in savings for the average household. Use the dishwasher wisely. Washing dishes by hand consumes nearly 5,000 more gallons of water a year. Operating automatic dishwashers with a full load can help you save water. Instead of rinsing dirty dishes, try scraping food waste from them. Using a “light wash” feature also conserves water. An ENERGY STAR dishwasher is, on average, 30 percent more water efficient than standard models and will save about 3,870 gallons of water over its lifetime. Fix leaks. Check your faucets inside and outside, and fix any leaks you find. A faucet leaking at a rate of one drop per second can waste up to 3,000 gallons of water per year. That’s the amount of water needed to take more than 180 showers! Trade up to an energy saving clothes washer. A full-sized energy saving clothes washer uses 13 gallons of water per load, compared to the 23 gallons used by a standard machine. That saves 3,000 gallons of water per year. They also use about 25 percent less energy which could save you $45 per year on your utility bill. Install water-efficient showerheads and faucet aerators. Standard showerheads use 2.5 gallons per minute, but a showerhead that earned the WaterSense label uses no more two gpm. This adds up to a savings of about 2,900 gallons of water per year. And replacing old, inefficient faucets and aerators can save the average family 700 gallons of water per year. Using less hot water also means your water heater uses less energy. Conserving water can surely put money back in your pocket!

Card of Thanks In Loving Memory of

Anissa Cecilia Ramirez April 3, 1991 † June 20, 2017

If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. Romans 12:8 Anissa Cecilia Ramirez (26) passed away in her hometown of Rio Grande City, Texas. With a contagious smile and a pure, loving heart, it’s not hard to see why Anissa was loved by all those who had the privilege to meet her. She was also extremely passionate about helping others through her chosen profession as a masseuse and providing therapeutic/physical rehabilitation services. Left to cherish Anissa’s memory is her mother, Mary Frances Ramirez, her four brothers, RJ (Letty) Ramirez, Luis (Dora) Ramirez, Eddie Ramirez, Daniel (Amby) Ramirez, and Angel Ramirez, her nieces and nephews, Charlie, Emily, Javier, Jaziel, Mica, and Connor, and aunts and uncles. She is preceded, in death, by her beloved father Romeo Javier Ramirez, Sr., who she immensely adored and wholeheartedly missed. The family wishes to express their most heartfelt and sincere gratitude for all the kind words, thoughts, prayers, and condolences. We remain incredibly humbled and blessed by the overwhelming, continual outpouring of love and support from the entire community. “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.” John 11:25-26 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Matthew 5:4

HPV Vaccination Prevents Cancers in Men, Too Men: A shot that prevents cancers — the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination — is for you, too, though not nearly enough males are getting it. Sadly, physicians say, vaccination rates in males are extremely low, and doctors are seeing more cancers in men caused by HPV. Nearly half of men aged 18 to 59 years (45.2 percent) have HPV infection, according to this month’s issue of the national medical digest JAMA Oncology. Yet just one in 10 (10.7 percent) of those males eligible for the HPV shots had been vaccinated, based on data collected through the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). For years, scientists have touted the HPV vaccination’s power to reduce cervical cancer in women. Now, during Men’s Health Week, Texas physicians urge men to get vaccinated against HPV to prevent cancers. HPV causes several cancers in men and women, including oropharyngeal (cancers of the head and neck such as the throat and mouth), penile, anal, cervical and vaginal. Some cases are fatal. “HPV vaccination could change the course of health for many men,” said David Lakey, MD, of Austin, chair of Texas Medical Association’s (TMA’s) Council on Science and Public Health. “The decision to get vaccinated during adolescence or even

young adulthood could mean you don’t have to suffer from an HPVcaused cancer such as throat or genital cancer, down the road.” More than 79 million Americans are estimated to have some strain of HPV infection. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States, yet there is no treatment for HPV. Half of the infections are believed to occur before people reach age 24. Usually, HPV infection goes away on its own. But when it doesn’t, the infection may cause cancer years later. According to the JAMA article, more than 9,000 cases of HPVrelated cancers are diagnosed each year in men. HPV has been found to cause 63 percent of penile cancers and 91 percent of anal cancers. Throat cancers are becoming increasingly common. Nearly 16,000 oropharyngeal cancers, found in the tonsils and base of the tongue, are diagnosed in the United States each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). And nearly all genital warts (90 percent) are caused by HPV infections, affecting some 160,000 men each year. Physicians and other health experts recommend the HPV vaccination for both males and females until age 26. Ideally, adolescents receive two HPV shots for best protection — before being exposed to HPV. But in Texas, only about onequarter to one-third of teen males are fully vaccinated against HPV, according to the 2015 National Immunization Survey-Teen. Older teens and young adults who weren’t vaccinated in adolescence can still benefit from HPV vaccination, said Dr. Lakey, who developed and leads TMA’s HPV Working Group. For those over age 15, however, CDC recommends three shots for full protection. “If you’re a young male and you haven’t gotten the HPV vaccination, ask your doctor about it,” said Dr. Lakey. “It’s certainly easier and better to prevent a cancer than have to endure potentially lengthy, uncomfortable, and costly medical procedures to treat one.” TMA’s infographic and fact sheet, both in English and Spanish, explain the importance of HPV vaccination.

Guillen Honors Special Olympics Athletes HB 1645 Gives Students who Participated in Special Olympics Events Recognition for their Achievements State Representative Ryan Guillen (D-Rural South Texas) is an author of HB 1645, a bill which requires high schools to allow students who compete in the Special Olympics to earn a letter for their letterman jacket. On Monday, May 22, HB 1645 was reported enrolled and sent to the Governor for action. “Our Special Olympics athletes have exemplified what it means to be a champion through hard work and sportsmanship,” said Guillen. “These extraordinary young men and women deserve to have their achievements recognized.” Currently, Texas school districts award letters to high school students for academic, athletic, or extracurricular activities, forming a memorable part of the traditional high school experience. Only a handful of schools, such as the Kingsville Independent School District, allow Special Olympics athletes to letter for their efforts. Just last year, the Kingsville Independent School District made incredible strides in recognizing the achievements of their students by forming a Special Olympics Lettermen Jacket Committee to raise funds to purchase letterman jackets and patches. According to the

chairman of the committee, Tim Acosta, “Something like (official recognition) would make the lettering process a lot easier. It makes it official that these kids should be included.” HB 1645 will require school districts that allow high school students to earn letters for academic, athletic, or extracurricular activities to allow high school students who participate in the Special Olympics to earn a letter. “We want our Special Olympics athletes to feel included in their high schools,” said Guillen. “With this bill, we can ensure all our high school athletes share in the long-standing tradition of being recognized for their achievements.” Representative Ryan Guillen serves ten rural South Texas counties in the Texas House of Representatives, including Atascosa, Brooks, Duval, Jim Hogg, Kenedy, La Salle, Live Oak, McMullen, Starr, and Willacy.

who had a curriculum without the gardening experience. In school gardening programs in Texas students showed significantly more gains in proenviromental attitudes than students in a control group. It was evident that the more outdoor experiences they had, the more positive their attitude. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Services is grateful to school board members, administrators, teachers, maintenance staff and community volunteers who support the orchard, and the six school gardens in the school system. The benefits of fruit and

vegetable gardening with children are so very important. The school district has provided a very valuable opportunity by creating a teaching environment that connects students’ senses, allowing them to plant, grow, harvest, and prepare healthy eating experiences.

Recently the TxDOT Pharr District drew up several scenarios for taking care of evacuees with special needs during hurricane season in the TxDOT Roma Maintenance Office. The Roma ISD Transportation Department assisted in the exercise. Thanks for the teamwork! (Photo and information courtesy TxDOT Pharr District.)

RGCCISD Elementary P.E. Department Mesquite borers are a type of long horned beetle Held Their Annual 2 Day Track Meet Mesquite trees are ubiquitous here in the Lower Rio G r a n d e Valley. I enjoy their twisting, curvy trunks but there are efforts underway to breed mesquites with straight trunks. The idea, of course, is to create another lumber tree. If achieved it would add an interesting color and texture to the existing choices. However, one additional problem to be dealt with, beyond that of producing a straight cultivar, is the presence of mesquite borers. They’re also numerous here in the Valley and can make mesquite lumber flawed and unusable for some purposes. As the name borer implies, they tunnel into and throughout the trunks leaving unsightly holes in any lumber produced. The adults are apparently attracted to fresh cuts and sap emerging from any damage to a mesquite tree. They soon lay eggs and the larvae tunnel in and degrade the quality of any future lumber. Mesquite borers are Placosternus difficilis, a type of long horned beetle. The adults live on pollen and nectar but the larvae feed on the wood of mesquites plus a few other tree species. If you have some locally cut wood for use in a fireplace, store it outside until use or you may find some unwanted beetles in your house. The borers

aren’t large or dangerous and the adults are attractive, looking somewhat like yellow and black wasps. They’re typical beetles with six legs, a pair of antennae and two pairs of wings; the front pair is a hard protective shell
