Daniella Muniz Broke School Record at the Track Meet

On March 1, Rio Grande City High School Daniella Muniz, 11, broke the school record at the track and field meet in Mission Veterans High School. Muniz broke the school record in the 100 meter dash with a 1st place time of 11.97 seconds. The previous record was held by Andrea Guerra and Kathy Trevino at 11.99 set in 2007 and 2008.

Daniella also placed 1st in the 200m dash (26.06), and 2nd in the long jump (15’11.5”).

The school record is Daniella’s second as she also holds the school record in the triple jump (36’4.75”) which she set in 2018.

Other top finishers at the meet: * Iesha Garcia: 2nd place in the shot put 35’5”. 5th place in the discus 107’6”, and * Karren Sanchez: 6th in the discus 107’1”.

They earned 1st Place in 4A at the FESTIBA Mariachi Competition on Saturday March 2, 2019 held at UTRGV. In addition, they earned Best Violin Section, Best Trumpet Section, Best Armonia

Section, and Best Vocal Section.

They are under the direction of Alfonso Rodriguez. GHS Mariachi Grulla de Plata earned a Division 1 at the UIL STATE SOLO AND ENSEMBLE held at UTRGV on February.

City High School Mariachi Juvenil Cascabel for Earning 2nd Place for their stellar performance at the 14th Annual FESTIBA Mariachi Competition in Edinburg Texas. They are under the direction of Mrs. Diana Salinas.

Congratulations to Roma High School student and RHS Orchestra Program member Marco Santistevan, who was selected as a member of the Carnegie Hall and its Weill Music Institute on being selected as a member of NYO2 for the 2019 season! The orchestra is made up of highly talented student musicians from across the United States.

Marco will attend the NYO2 Program from July 10 to July

31 in New York, which includes a 10-day residency at Purchase College, SUNY, alongside NYOUSA and NYO Jazz. The orchestra will spend a week in Miami Beach at the home of the New World Symphony, performing at the New World Center on July 27 and at Carnegie Hall on July 30.

Sean Carter and his mom, Jenny, have taken their message to more than 200,000 people to help prevent drunk driving and to make people aware of the consequences of their choices.

WhenSeanSpeaks provides a frank look at the circumstances and choices that Sean made that placed him in a wheelchair, unable to talk or walk.

Sean visited with the following ACE After School Centers in Education Grant schools at RGCCISD to deliver his powerful message : Grulla High School, Grulla Middle School, Veterans Middle School and Ringgold Middle School Without uttering a word, Sean speaks with an iPad that speaks the words he types, Sean captured the students hearts and had immediate rapport with his audience as he shared his story. In a coma for 39 days following the crash, Sean now has a new and productive life. His goal is to educate students about the dangers of drunk driving .

RIO (CATE) CAREER FAIR The Rio Grande City C.I.S.D. Career & Technology Education Department (CATE), a program that reinforces state and national academic standards by providing students training in career areas to prepare them to succeed in post secondary education and careers, recently hosted a CTE Career Expo Fair for Rio Grande High School Students on Wednesday March 6, 2019 at Rio High School Gymnasium.

The Career Fair Expo offered the students the opportunity to obtain information by visiting personally with not only CTE teachers but with the entire community that participated in this grand event.

On behalf of the RGCCISD CTE administration & staff, Rio Grande City High School and post -secondary institutions we would like to thank all the community members that participated in this successful event .

The CTE department will be hosting another Career Expo for the Grulla students this month as well.

15 Roma High Students Selected Roma High Seniors Trained In CPR as Texas All-State Musician A big thanks to Roma ISD PE Coordinator Octavio Cantu for spending an entire week training and certifying all 400+ Roma High School seniors in CPR. According to House Bill 897, all graduating seniors in the state of Texas must have CPR training before graduation.

Thanks to Mr. Saldivar and Mr. Trevino for supporting the effort through coordination and scheduling.

Congratulations to the 15 Roma High School Band Program students who performed with the Texas All-State Bands in San Antonio on February 16, 2019 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center as part of the 2019 Texas Music Educators Association Clinic/Convention. The students were chosen for the prestigious honor through a competitive process held this year across the state at District, Region, and Area levels.

Daniela Molina, flute; Roberta Hinojosa, clarinet; Aracely Garcia, bassoon; Pablo Reyes, bass clarinet; Kailey Lopez, contra-bass clarinet; Carlos Saenz, trumpet; Salvador Barajas, trombone; and Abraham Riso, percussion, played with the 5-A All State Symphonic Band. Jacqueline Mirelez, piccolo; Alejandro Moreno, clarinet; and Sheyla Ruiz, alto clarinet, performed in the 6-A Concert Band. Angelica Trevino, flute; Jesus Alaniz, bassoon; Manfredo Guerra, alto sax; and Jose C Martinez, tuba, played with the 6-A Symphonic Band.

High school students selected to

perform in the All-State concerts have competed through auditions to qualify at the state level. All-State is the highest honor a Texas music student can receive. 1,780 students are selected through a process that began with over 72,900 students from around the state vying for this honor to perform in one of 15 ensembles (bands, orchestras, and choirs). Texas Music Educators Association sponsors the Texas AllState competition. This competitive process begins throughout the state in auditions hosted by 33 TMEA Regions. Individual musicians perform selected music for a panel of judges who rank each instrument or voice part. From this ranking, a select group of musicians advances from their Region to compete against musicians from other areas in eight TMEA Area competitions.

The highest-ranking musicians judged at the TMEA Area competitions qualify to perform in a TMEA All-State music group.

Only the top 2.4% of musicians who initially audition become AllState musicians.

Texas Delta Theta Master of Beta Sigma Phi enjoyed a special guest at their first meeting in February.

Invited by Program Chairman Rosie Garcia, Lydia Garza Saenz attended the meeting, and her mother, Teodora Carrera Garza, was featured in the program.

Following a delicious meal and the business meeting, with Diana Peña presiding and Elia Perez serving as hostess, Mrs. Garcia introduced the program, “Congratulations on your 150th birthday, Fort Ringgold.” Founded in 1848, the Fort celebrated its Sesquicentennial in 1998. One of the special events was the Heritage Style Show, featuring women who

had been influential in the growth and success of the area.

Monica Garcia, daughter of the program chair, portrayed Teodora Carrera Garza in the event. The Town Crier Sesquicentennial issue was used as a source of information for the program, including pictures of the style show participants. Mrs. Garza Saenz shared family pictures

and scrapbooks and told the history of her family. Her mother, who came to the area in 1912, always said, “Don’t be ordinary.” A successful, self-made business owner of the Rio Grande Variety Store, she was indeed extraordinary, as are her children. Another special guest at the meeting was the hostess’s sister, The RMS Starlettes performed at the Starr County Fair on Friday, March 1st treating the crowd to an Edna. outstanding high-kick performance to Brooks & Dunn’s Boot Scootin Boogie Remix. Awesome job, Ladies!

5 tips when driving behind farm equipment

By Julie Tomascik You left your house 15 minutes late, and you get caught in traffic.

The reason? Large farm equipment.

It’s that time of year again, when farmers are beginning to plant from the Rio Grande Valley to Central Texas. It won’t be long, and the rest of the state will follow as the temperatures steadily warm up.

That means more tractors and large equipment are on the road with you.

We’ve all seen them. They’re large, wide and slow. Your car is fast—much faster than the 25-miles-per hour of the farmer’s equipment. But public roads are often the only way to move it.

And because Texas is a top agricultural state, every Texan— urban, suburban and rural—will eventually encounter large farm equipment on the road.

Your fast cars and farmers’ slow tractors can be a recipe for disaster. Accidents involving farm equipment and cars happen every year. And families are forever changed.

Farmers respect your right to the road, but they’d like that same courtesy returned to them.

It seems, however, that awareness is often the toughest thing to grow.

Awareness about what farmers and ranchers do, but also about farm safety—on and off the road.

That’s where we all come into play.

Here are 5 things you can do when you meet farm equipment on the road.

1. Be alert and cautious. And give large farm equipment and other slow-moving vehicles space.

2. Do not pass if you are in a space designated as a “No Passing Zone” or in any area that is not safe to do so—intersections, bridges and railroad crossings, among others.

3. Make sure the tractor isn’t

trying to make a left turn before you pass on the left.

4. Don’t tailgate.

5. Be careful when you do get the chance to pass. And often, farmers will move their equipment over when it is safe to do so.

It can be frustrating, but those farmers are just trying to get to and from their job, too. Only it’s a little different. Their office is that tractor you’re stuck behind. Their hours are likely sun up to sun down, and they’re trying to beat whatever

Mother Nature is throwing their way.

But they get it. They know 25 miles-per-hour isn’t the fastest or most ideal speed. They understand you have places to be, deadlines to meet and families to see. They can relate.

There are even bills filed in the Texas Legislature that would make it legal to drive slow-moving vehicles, like farm equipment, on the shoulder. That would help alleviate some of the issues.

NOTICE OF APPLICATION FOR OIL AND GAS WASTE DISPOSAL WELL PERMIT Merit Energy Company, 13727 Noel Road, Suite 1200, Dallas, Texas 75240 is applying to the Railroad Commission of Texas to amend a permit to dispose of produced salt water or other oil and gas waste by well injection into a porous formation not productive of oil or gas.

The applicant proposes to dispose of oil and gas waste into the Queen City formation, Guerra “A” SWD well Number 1, RRC Field Name Bob West (L-12,13,14,15).

The proposed disposal well is 17 miles NW of Roma, in Starr Co., Texas. The wastewater will be injected into strata in the subsurface depth from 1675 to 3400 feet.

Maximum injection volume is 5000 BPD with a Maximum Surface Injection Pressure of 825 psig.

LEGAL AUTHORITY: Chapter 27 of the Texas Water Code, as amended, Title 3 of the Texas Natural Resources Code, as amended, and the Statewide Rules of the Oil and Gas Division of the Railroad Commission of Texas.

Another bill, if passed, would give farmers more flexibility on where they place the slow moving vehicle sign—the large, neon orange triangle that is displayed on the back of the vehicle. Doing so would make it more visible and hopefully raise more awareness of the speed difference.

Because one accident. One moment. One day. All could be life changing.

So slow down, and enjoy some good tunes on the radio, catch up on a podcast or listen to an audio book. Being behind a slow-moving vehicle will only add a little extra time to your commute. But being a responsible and courteous driver could save your life and the farmer’s.

The Texas banded gecko is the most exquisite creature I’ve ever seen!

It was after dark and a very light rain was falling.

My dog and I were strolling about taking our usual evening walk when I noticed a movement at the side of the trail. I cast the light from my flashlight to the spot and thought I saw a scorpion. What I clearly saw, when it stopped, was a Texas banded gecko. It was so exquisite I could hardly believe my eyes; I stood entranced. I knelt down close to it and held the flashlight at close range in order to fully enjoy its delicate beauty.

Geckos are tiny reptiles and there are seven species in Texas.

Of those, the most attractive is the Texas banded gecko. Of no more than about four inches in length, nearly half the length being tail, they are the smallest of the geckos.

While nocturnal and therefore infrequently seen, they’re fairly common in southern and eastern Texas, into extreme southeastern New Mexico and throughout northeastern Mexico.

I’ve learned why I first thought I saw a scorpion; the Texas banded gecko holds its tail up over its body when startled, just as a scorpion does. Perhaps for that reason some people erroneously believe that the geckos are venomous. They’re, in fact. entirely harmless.

The neck, body and slightly pudgy tail on young adults have alternating bands of yellow or cream and brownish-flesh or pink that sometimes may be divided by a black line. All bands have dots or a filigree of black. The head may look brownish-gray and have some decorative yellow curlicues; the eyes have white rimmed eyelids and pupils that are dark vertical slits.

What fascinated me as much as anything about this exquisite gem were its tiny, delicate legs and feet. They were pinkishflesh and the toes were incredibly thin, like tiny pink hairs but with

barely discernible knuckles and nails. I pondered about how tiny its insect and spider prey must be for these appendages to suffice in any struggle. Unlike other geckos, the toes have no pads for climbing smooth surfaces.

When threatened, male geckos may utter barely audible squeaks.

As a means of escape, the tail brakes off easily but is soon regenerated, although the pattern of bands on the new tail may differ markedly from the original.

As with other reptiles, it periodically sheds its skin. It eats the shed skin which, while seeming a bit gross, is a means for conserving nutrients otherwise lost.

I shall always remember my brief encounter with this exquisite creature. It was a transcendent moment for me and I’m thankful for the opportunity to observe the richly diverse wildlife of our thorny brush country.
