ROSE BENAVIDEZ
It is with great humility and respect that I ask the residents of our community for their continued support and confidence to remain as your Starr County Representative on the South Texas College Board of Trustees during the upcoming May 5, 2018 election. When I came before you in 2012 you allowed me the privilege of continuing my father’s, Manuel Benavidez Jr., legacy of service. I sought this seat not as a stepping stone into politics, but as a pathway to build on my passion for public service. Since then I have worked tirelessly as your voice to ensure we receive every opportunity to expand access and cultivate success for our area. Today, I ask you to join our campaign that is motivated by each one of you willing to invest in the power of education, by each one of you that have come through the doors of our Starr County Campus in search of change, by each one of the thousands of dual enrollment students that have benefited from tuition-free college credit, each one

RGCCISD SUPER YOUTH AND SUPER KIDZ
RGCCISD SUPER YOUTH AND SUPER KIDZ are a group of youth who give the definition of prevention. The Super Youth is a collaboration between RGCCISD Substance Abuse Specialist and Starr County Community Coalition for students to set the example for other youth to remain free of drugs. These youth participate in not only school events but community events as well. From helping at
our local pantry, visiting those in recovery, quarterly cigarette butt pick-ups, attending leadership conference’s, and yearly public service announcements on trending drugs, these students are devoted to bring awareness on prevention. The Super Youth are a group of students that advocate to live a life free of drugs and stand behind the fact that drugs will only hinder their success.
RGGCISD introduced the Super Youth as a reminder to students to stand up to bullying and advocate to say no to drugs. Prevention is the key to be drug free! This year the RGCCISD super youth PSA is “JUST SAY KNOW”. On behalf of the Substance Abuse/ Prevention Intervention Department and the RGCCISD family. HAVE A SAFE SPRING BREAK.

TxDOT Urges Drivers To Plan For A Sober Ride During Spring Break
‘Plan While You Can’ campaign aims to reduce crashes, save lives Each year in Texas, more than half of drivers involved in deadly drunk driving crashes are between the ages of 17 and 34. With many college students and young adults heading to Spring Break destinations in the coming weeks, the Texas Department of Transportation’s “Plan While You Can” campaign reminds them to make a sober ride part of their festivities. “Enjoy Spring Break, but do so responsibly,” said TxDOT Executive Director James Bass. “If you drink and drive, you run the very real risk of being killed or destroying your future and the lives of others. It’s irresponsible and just not worth it.” During last year’s Spring Break* in Texas, there were 410 crashes involving young drivers who were driving under the influence of alcohol. Those crashes killed 20 people and seriously injured another 48. The “Plan While You Can” campaign includes a statewide tour featuring an interactive dodgeball game where participants try to avoid incoming “beach balls” as virtual drinks are added to the screen. As more drinks are added, participants experience how drinking can slow their reaction times as on-screen avatars begin responding more slowly to their players’ movements. The experience will visit eight Texas cities during March. While drivers under the influence of alcohol risk killing or seriously injuring themselves or others, they also face up to $17,000 in fines and fees, jail time and loss of their driver’s license. Visit SoberRides. org to find alternatives to drinking and driving, such as: ·Designating a sober driver, or calling someone for a sober ride home. ·Contacting a cab or rideshare service. ·Using mass transit. ·Spending the night.

The Valley has two gnatcatcher species gray and the black-tailed gnatcatchers. Most people have not seen, or at least not noticed, either species. We’ll examine the blue-gray gnatcatcher first since it’s the more often seen; its habitat is more widespread. They’re found in deciduous forests from southeastern Canada, throughout the eastern and southwestern U. S. and into Mexico. The northern gnatcatchers migrate to the southern U. S. in winter so they become more abundant in the Texas coastal areas. They’re tiny birds, only 4” to 5” in length and weighing a mere 1/4 oz. The upper body is blue-gray and the under side is white. The

to side. The tail motion helps to scare insects which are its main food along with insect eggs and spiders. The bill is slender, straight and black. The eyes have a thin white eye ring. Males have black eyebrows that meet at the bill making a “V” when viewed from the front. Nesting, which may happen twice a year, involves b o t h parents building a neat nest, including lichens and spiderwebs, on top of a horizontal branch and looking like a tree knot. Both birds care for the young. The other gnatcatcher. called a black-tailed flycatcher, is perhaps of greater interest
northern Mexico. There’s very little difference between the two species. Both have similar plumage. The distinction is that, when seen from beneath, the black-tailed, as the name indicates, has more black showing in the tail than the blue-gray. Not much difference to rely on. In the warm months we’re luckier. The male black-tailed develops breeding plumage of a black head above the eyes. While on a tour, early last fall here at Rancho Lomitas, we were fortunate to see a male blacktailed only about 30 feet from our trailer. We stopped and for about 5 minutes it hopped about while everyone got a good look and lots of photos. The black on the head was clearly visible. During some phases of plumage it’s almost impossible to distinguish between the species. Whichever gnatcatcher you see, they’re interesting and beneficial and we’re delighted to see them.
