flowers provide an uncommon color to the landscape and the butterflies enjoy the nectar. It prospers in sandy soil, in full sun, while most wildflowers get stressed out. There are several species of the genus Palafoxie which are native to our south-western states. Palafoxia rosea is found in the mid-southern states and northern Mexico. It’s especially fond of the South Texas Plains. It belongs to the sunflower family, all of which are composites. That means that what appears to be a single flower is actually many tiny flowers crowded together. Usually only the outer

ring of flowers have petals and are called ray flowers. The inner ones have no petals and are called disc flowers. In the case of palafoxias, there are no ray flowers and the 12 to 25 disc flowers each do have a petal. That’s a rather special arrangement. Growing 1 to 2 feet tall, it has leaves which are graygreen, up to 2 inches long and are somewhat s p i n d l e shaped but fuller and more rounded at their attachment end. Botanists call the leaf form lanceolate. The branch tips can be pruned back in late spring to make the plants grow bushier and, therefore, produce more flowers. Records of folk medicine refer to the use of palafoxias to treat fever, nausea and chills. There is no proof of its medical efficacy. I’m sufficiently pleased just by its easy care and attractiveness in the landscape.

On National Ag Day and Every Day, we Celebrate #OurFarmers
By: Gary Six, State Executive Director, Texas Farm Service Agency and Salvador Salinas, Texas State Conservationist, Natural Resources Conservation Service March 2019 Farmers and ranchers are the backbone of America. They grow food to feed us, fiber to clothe us, and fuel to run our homes and cars. Their hard work and dedication provide economic stability across the nation – stability that supports rural economies and creates much-needed jobs in local communities. No matter who we are, where we live, or what we do, we all have a reason every day to celebrate and thank #ourfarmers. March 14 is designated as National Ag Day. Today and every day, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Texas join fellow agencies, non-profits, private industries, and consumers in thanking our agricultural producers for their contributions to our nation and beyond.

This year’s National Ag Day theme, Agriculture: Food for Life, spotlights the hard work of American farmers and ranchers who diligently work to provide food and fiber for the United States and countries around the world. At USDA, our driving commitment is to support them as they put food on America’s tables. USDA works with millions of rural producers through a network of local service centers that serve every county. Our farmers face challenges each day, and we’re proud to offer a variety of programs to help them fund their operations, manage risk, conserve natural resources, and recover from natural disasters. On behalf of USDA, we would like to thank #ourfarmers for feeding our nation and the world. To our farmers and ranchers: We are here to support you every step of the way. Visit your local service center for one-on-one support with USDA programs and services, or learn more at farmers. gov. On National Ag Day, and every other day of the year, we celebrate you.
