Big Shots, Big Opportunities
The Rio Grande Valley Vipers played the number one team in the NBA G-league Saturday, March 21st at the Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg, Texas. After dragging Memphis Hustle into a whopping four overtimes, Rio Grande City Mayor Joel Villarreal joined Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick along with Texas State Senators Eddie Lucio Jr. and Chuy Hinojosa, RGV businessman Alonso Cantu, and local Rio Grande City-Grulla Independent School District School Board Members John Pope and Jay Pena in the Viper den. “Having a conversation with Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick about the future of Rio Grande City was just as electrifying as tonight’s game,” exclaims Mayor Villarreal. Sources indicate that the Lieutenant Governor has vested interests on improving the quality of life in Rio Grande City for the years to come. Dan Goeb Patrick has been serving as the 42nd lieutenant governor of Texas since January of 2005 under Greg Abbott. Originally from Maryland, his political career bloomed from his active role as a radio and television broadcaster. The Maryland native is known for his views on Life, Liberty, the Second Amendment, Border Security, our military and our Vets, and more. As lieutenant governor, Patrick’s duties encircle roles within the executive and legislative branches, a role which is deemed as the second-highest executive office in the government of Texas–not to forget to mention the inherent duty of stepping in the governor’s place in the case of his absence.
The future of Rio Grande City radiates brighter each and every day with the collective support of local and state governments.

Te queremos te extrañamos y nunca te olvidaremos.
Roma ISD’s Special Education Department delivered a Crisis Prevention Institute Training for district Bus Monitors. Every day, millions of Americans are targeted by scammers through phone calls, emails, text messages, websites and in person. Scammers’ tactics can change daily, which is why it’s important for consumers to stay on top of the latest scam reports. Electric co-op members have been targeted through a phone scam purporting that power will be shut off unless immediate payment is received. Remember, Medina Electric Cooperative will never call you and demand immediate payment without notice. We want you to be aware of two other trending scam tactics. One is the overpayment trick, in which a scammer contacts you and claims that you have overpaid your utility bill. The scammer will say they need your personal banking information to deposit the extra funds back into your checking account. Don’t fall for this scam! If you make an overpayment to us, Medina EC will automatically apply the credit to your account, which will carry over to the next billing cycle. Another trending scam is called smishing (short for Short Message Service, or SMS, phishing). Many consumers know to watch out for suspicious emails, but we tend to trust text messages sent to our smartphones. Always question
suspicious texts, especially from someone claiming to represent a utility. Medina EC will only send you important updates via text if you’ve signed up for our text alert service. Here are a few reminders on how to take control of the situation when you’ve been targeted by a scammer: Take your time. Utility scammers try to create a sense of urgency so that you’ll act fast and hand over personal information without thinking. Take a moment to evaluate the situation before acting. Scammers Be suspicious. typically request immediate payment through prepaid debit cards or third-party smartphone apps. Unusual requests like this should raise red flags. Remember, if the request seems strange and out of the ordinary, you’re likely being targeted by a scammer. Confirm before you act. If you’re contacted by someone claiming to represent Medina EC or another utility but you’re unsure, just hang up the phone and call the utility directly. You can reach us at 1-866-MEC-ELEC (632-3532) to verify the situation. Medina EC members can learn more about scams targeted at utilities at MedinaEC.org/ Scammers.

NOTICE OF INTENTION TO ISSUE CERTIFICATES OF OBLIGATION National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week, or NDAFW, is an annual, week-long, health observance that inspires dialogue about the science of drug use and addiction among youth. It provides an opportunity to bring together scientists, students, educators, healthcare providers, and community partners – to help advance the science, so that we can improve the prevention and awareness of substance misuse in our own communities and nationwide. This year, NDAFW is being observed March 21 – 27, 2022. Please contact the Starr County Community Coalition for more information and to participate in local community events. Drug use and addiction is extremely complex, which means, quitting takes more than a good intention and a strong will. Addiction is a combination of risk factors and the more risk factors you have, increases your chance that taking a drug will lead to addiction.

National Nonprofit Wreaths Across America Announces New Theme and Planned Curriculum to TEACH the Next Generation in 2022 and Beyond Each year, millions of Americans come together to REMEMBER the fallen, HONOR those that serve and their families, and TEACH the next generation about the value of freedom. This gathering of volunteers and patriots takes place in local and national cemeteries in all 50 states - most recently at more than 3,100 participating locations as part of National Wreaths Across America Day. Each year, a new theme is chosen to help volunteers and supporters focus their messaging and outreach in their own communities. The national nonprofit announces the theme for 2022 is “Find a way to serve.” The inspiration for this year’s theme came from a few different places and seemed to be a recurring conversation throughout the last year. Notably, the American Rosie Movement, whose mission is to find and capture the stories of the World War II-era women known as Rosie the Riveters, or simply “Rosies.” These women
pulled together to do the work that needed to be done for our freedom. The movement encourages youth to get involved in their own communities to serve in small ways that can make a big impact. As part of this new theme, Wreaths Across America is revamping its educational curriculum working with the American Rosie Movement and other organizations to develop action plans to inspire young people across the country to find a way to serve in 2022 and beyond. “You don’t have to be in military service to serve your community and country,” said Karen Worcester, executive director, Wreaths Across America. “Serving others, or being in service to others, gives purpose and I’ve seen first-hand from Gold Star Families to Veterans, how it can help people heal.” In 2021, more than 2.4 million veterans’ wreaths were placed by volunteers on headstones at 3,136 participating locations
around the country in honor of the service and sacrifices made for our freedoms, with each name said out loud. Wreaths Across America volunteers work yearround to ensure military laid to rest are remembered, their families and living veterans are honored, and the next generation is taught about the value of freedom. “Every person has something to give, whether it is their time, ideas, compassion, or resources,” added Worcester. “What can seem like the simplest act or gift, can start a nationwide movement and that is our hope that this theme will spark in people. I think Mother Teresa said it best, ‘the greatest good is what we do for one another.’” This year, National Wreaths Across America Day is Saturday, December 17, 2022.
