The Broken Chain We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone for part of us went with you, the day that God called you home. You left us beautiful memories, your love is still our guide, and though we cannot see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same; but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again
We wish to express our thanks to all our relatives, friends, and neighbors who made a most dificult time in our lives easier to bear due to their kindness, beautiful lowers, phone calls, food, donations, masses, and prayers. It helps to know that others share our loss of our beloved mother.

Roma ISD School Board Honors Roma High Red Cross: Safely heat your home School Tennis Program Student Athletes
The Roma ISD School Board honored the Roma High School Tennis Team at their Board Recognition Meeting. The Tennis Team earned the Bi-District Championship for the fall 2021 season, and 15 student athletes earned All-District honors. Coach Eddie Marquez was named Coach of the Year. Awesome season Gladiators!!
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides comfort to victims of disasters; supplies about 40% of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; distributes international humanitarian aid; and supports veterans, military members and their families. The Red Cross is a nonprofit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to deliver its mission.
Home fires typically increase during colder The American Red Cross Texas Gulf Coast urges families to safely heat their home to avoid home fires. Heating equipment is the second leading causes of home fires and during colder weather we tend to see an increase in home fires. Since January 1, the Texas Gulf Coast Region have responded to more than 70 home fires, assisting more than 285 individuals. “Colder temperatures often bring the increased risk of home heating fires, and we want everyone to stay safe by properly warming their home,” said Vanessa Valdez, Regional Communications Manager. HOW TO HEAT YOUR HOME SAFELY A 2020 Red Cross survey showed that more than half of us have used a space heater — which is involved in most fatal home heating fires. Provide at least three feet of space around all heating equipment, and never leave space heaters unattended. Follow these additional tips: •If you must use a space heater, place it on a level, hard and nonflammable surface, such as a ceramic tile floor. Don’t place it on rugs and carpets, or near bedding and drapes; keep away children and pets.
•Plug space heater power cords directly into outlets — never an extension cord. Turn it off every time you leave the room or go to sleep. •Never use a cooking range or oven to heat your home. •Never leave a fire burning in the fireplace unattended. Make sure any embers in the fireplace are extinguished before going to bed or leaving home. Use a glass or metal fire screen to keep embers in the fireplace. •Have furnaces, chimneys, fireplaces, wood and coal stoves inspected annually by a professional and cleaned if necessary. TAKE TWO STEPS TO PREVENT FIRE TRAGEDIES To help protect your family year-round, test your smoke alarms monthly and practice your home fire escape plan until everyone can escape in less than two minutes — the amount of time you may have to get out of a burning home before it’s too late. Visit redcross.org/fire for more information, including an escape plan to practice with your family. You can also download the free Red Cross Emergency app by searching for ‘American Red Cross’ in app stores. Three Cybersecurity Tips to Protect Yourself and Your Devices From Privacy Threats By Tom Kelly, president and CEO of IDX On September 13, 2021
LEGAL NOTICE Application has been made with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission for a WINE AND MALT RETAILERS PERMIT (BG), by: CARNES ASADAS EL ESTABLO LLC dba CARNES ASADAS EL ESTABLO, to be located at 5174 E. HIGHWAY 83, ROMA, STARR COUNTY, TEXAS. Owner of said LLC: JOSE IVAN GARZA.
Apple suddenly released an unprecedented, emergency security update after researchers at Citizen Lab discovered that an Israeli spyware group was able to infect Apple products via a critical cybersecurity vulnerability. Before the emergency patch, cybercriminals could use what’s called a “Zero-Day exploit” to put malware on Apple products without ever being detected. Apple had to work non-stop to patch the vulnerability before cybercriminals around the world caught wind of the exploit. But while this particular cybersecurity crisis may have been narrowly averted, it’s far from an isolated incident. Last year alone saw a massive surge in ransomware attacks, malware and more. These attacks don’t just target
businesses and industries; they target individuals too. We all use our phones, social media websites, smartphone apps and other digital services to live our daily lives and share our sensitive information. Today, the security of that information is at risk. The fact is that cybercrime has been on the rise since the start of the pandemic. As more and more people rely on digital products and services to do their banking, shopping, investing, working, dating and socializing, almost no one and nothing is immune to the growing threat posed by the world’s cybercriminals. But ordinary people can and should take charge of their own cybersecurity and protect the privacy of their data. Using digital technology

doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your safety, security and privacy. But you can’t rely on the companies behind the products you use to do all the work for you. Cybercriminals are working around the clock to hack your devices and steal your data; taking careful and proactive steps to protect yourself is key. It may not be possible to prevent the next zero-day exploit, but you can keep yourself from falling victim to any of the countless cyberattacks launched every day. Here are my three cybersecurity tips. (1) Use Two-Factor Authentication and Other Security Protocols Cybercriminals are dedicated, hard-working and, in many cases, well-funded. They are always trying to find new ways to hack your devices and online accounts. There’s a lot that companies can do to make their products and services more secure. But 95% of cybersecurity breaches are due to human error. If you want to be as secure as possible, you have to take steps on your own to protect yourself. For most people, that means using things like two-factor authentication or creating unique
and difficult-to-guess passwords for their accounts. Some of these security protocols may seem burdensome; but they are simple steps that can have a huge impact. (2) Beware of Suspicious Links and Emails It’s easy to focus on the big cyber incidents involving stateof-the-art technology. As scary and significant as these incidents can be, they are far from the most common type of cybercrime. Most often, cybercriminals rely on a tactic known as social engineering. That means cybercriminals try to manipulate and trick people, rather than directly hack their devices. The only defense against social engineering is vigilance. Social engineering usually involves a phishing attack, where cybercriminals send emails that look legitimate to try to get people to give up their bank information, volunteer their login credentials or simply download malware. So keep an eye out for suspicious emails; if it doesn’t feel or look right, be careful! (3) Take Control of Your Data An emerging threat to everyone’s cybersecurity is the internet itself. So many of the websites and services we use,
especially things like our social media platforms, collect massive amounts of information about us. Hackers can easily scrape data from these websites or intercept information and steal personal data. So much of the internet runs on a business model that is hostile to user privacy. Taking back control of your data can help protect your identity, whether that means limiting the data you give to apps and websites or even just making informed decisions by reading website privacy policies. Don’t take a lack of privacy for granted. Instead, take ownership of your privacy in whatever way you can.
NOVENA “Miraculous Prayer” Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it, Dear Jesus, and place it within your own heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail.

John and Olive Hinojosa Elementary was recognized as one of this Year’s National ESEA Distinguished Schools. The school was chosen by the State Education Agency based on outstanding performance in closing the achievement gap between student groups for two or more consecutive years. Because only two schools per state were selected, this award is an especially prestigious honor for John and Olive Hinojosa staff and students. RGCGISD members from the campus and the district traveled to New Orleans to be recognized for their accomplishment.
On behalf of Mr. Adolfo Pena Jr., the School Board of Trustees, and all of Rio Grande City Grulla ISD, we want to congratulate J&O Hinojosa Elm. School for everything you do for our students!

Roma High Gladiator Cadets Take Home Top Prizes at 15th Annual Tri-City Air Rifle Tournament
By: Luis C. Barrera, LTC, USA Retired, Roma High School Senior Army Instructor, and RGV JROTC Drill Association President The newly restarted Gladiator US Army JROTC Battalion Marksmanship Team traveled to the 15th Annual Tri-City Sporter Rifle Tournament on Jan. 28, 2022 and brought back the 1st and 3RD Place Trophies. Once a year the Gladiator Battalion conducts an air rifle qualification program for all JROTC Cadets. This year’s program ran from January 3 to 14. By waiting until the 2nd semester to conduct qualifications, the cadets had a
The Gladiator A Rifle Team that consisted of Jahaziel Rios, Raul Torrecilla, Daniel Luera and Mario Rangel came back with the first place trophy beating out 42 other schools from South Texas. The Gladiator B Rifle Team of Andres Garza, Erasmo Jaime, Isbel Gudino and Vanessa Solis brought us back the 3rd place trophy. The Top three shooters for the meet were from Roma, 1st Jahaziel Rios, 2nd Raul Torrecilla 3rd Mario Rangel. better chance to earn one of the coveted marksmanship badges. Before a cadet can fire their first round downrange they must go through 8 days of classroom instruction covering safety, fundamentals of rifle shooting, and instruction in the different positions involved in threeposition rifle shooting; this being the prone, standing, and kneeling positions. In addition, all cadets must pass the range safety exam with a 100 percent and sign a 15-point safety pledge before being allowed to fire. While on the range all cadets serve as assistant safety officers and help each other as a two-person team
while attempting to qualify. Even with all of the above training, first time shooters as well as the more experienced shooters, find earning a badge does not come easy. To earn a marksman badge, shooters must fire a minimum score of 175 out of a possible 200 points in the prone and standing positions. To earn the sharpshooter badge, cadets must score a minimum 188 points out of 200. The few who earn the right to try for the title of expert rifleman must fire in all three positions to include the kneeling position and must fire a score of 290 out of 300 to earn the elite expert badge.

The Art Of Healthy Heart Living
Dr. Dileep V. Menon Cardiovascular diseases continues to be a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in the United States. Despite tremendous advances in the field of cardiovascular medicine in the last three decades encompassing a wide array of preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, the burden from cardiovascular diseases is on the rise. Every 40 seconds, a person in the United States will suffer a heart attack or stroke. Mortality from these conditions has come down significantly but still is a cause for considerable concern especially when there is a delay in seeking medical treatment. Significant morbidity both in terms of physical and mental health results in reduced productivity both at work and socially taking a toll on society. The month of February has been designated as Heart Disease Awareness Month to enable people to focus on their cardiovascular health. Pivotal to cardiovascular health is a heart healthy lifestyle which
comprises of healthy diet, regular exercise, abstaining from cigarette smoking, stress management and good sleep hygiene. As the adage goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. These are essential healthy lifestyle measures that needs to be implemented in one’s daily life as healthy practices, and over time with persistence and effort transform them into healthy habits. What might seem a herculean task to implement and maintain in the beginning, will reap rich dividends for you in the long run. The best return of investment in the world can only be health- after all health truly is indeed wealth. Great emphasis is given to diet in the cardiovascular health universe. A low calorie, low carbohydrate, high protein, low salt diet enriched with fruits and vegetables are promoted to reduce the impact of common comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes and cholesterol. Intermittent fasting or timed feeding interval has shown to have significant benefits in achieving and maintaining weight loss with beneficial effects on metabolic parameters. Regular daily exercise is encouraged to avail the benefits of weight loss, blood pressure reduction, improving glycemic and lipid parameters as well as enhanced functional capacity and a sense of wellbeing. Cessation of cigarette smoking is paramount for a desirable outcome in cardiovascular disease. Stress has clearly been linked to cardiovascular disease and adequate stress management techniques with meditation, yoga and biofeedback could mitigate it. Incorporating a good
sleep hygiene into your daily routine enables the body get adequate rest to tackle the challenges of the next day. Risk of cardiovascular disease can be modified with control of blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. A visit to your family doctor could easily enable you to obtain these parameters and assess your personalized cardiovascular risk. Early, aggressive and timely
MARCH 2, 2022 PAGE 10
interventions can prevent and reduce the risk of future cardiovascular events. As we all spend time on February to tend to Cupid’s arrow with showers of flowers, gifts and chocolates, let us not forget to take time to focus on one’s own heart and its health. After, all life is where the heart is and a healthy heart is the key to a healthy life.
You’re in good hands.
