The bottom line: Vaccines are our best protection against disease, but in some situations vaccinated people can still get sick. In the case of influenza, several factors can cause this. Nonetheless, physicians stress vaccines are the best form of protection, shielding many individuals from the disease or at least reducing the severity of symptoms, and preventing hospitalization or death. Vaccines protect us from preventable diseases. However, why do some vaccinated people get sick anyway? Several factors determine a vaccine’s effectiveness at protecting an individual, physicians say.
While most vaccinations have high rates of effectiveness (even greater than 90% protection), others, like influenza, are less predictable. Vaccines protect us from preventable diseases. However, why do some vaccinated people get sick anyway? Several factors determine a vaccine’s effectiveness at protecting an individual, physicians say. “Every year the [flu] virus changes, and scientists in laboratories have to try to figure out what the next strain of influenza will be, make the most educated guess, put those strains into the vaccine – and sometimes it’s not a perfect
match,” said Austin internist, pediatrician, and infectious disease specialist David L. Lakey, MD, in a TMA video. “Sometimes the vaccine versus the strains of influenza that are circulating isn’t perfect.” People with specific medical conditions such as heart disease, chronic lung disease, and cancer have a harder time fighting diseases and are at a higher risk of developing severe complications. Older people are also more susceptible to getting sick. Some adults experience waning immunity – their immunity built up from childhood vaccines diminishes. That’s why they are

strongly urged to keep up with their vaccinations, to give their immunity a boost. “Patients that are diabetic, patients that have other things that immuno compromise them, individuals that are older, they don’t have as robust a response to the vaccine,” said Dr. Lakey, who serves on TMA’s Council on Science and Public Health, in the video. “By immunizing those individuals, it protects them from having the severe cases.” People suffering from the flu can experience fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headaches, fatigue, and vomiting. If left untreated, some individuals may develop complications like pneumonia, which can be fatal. But the flu shot can minimize those symptoms if people get sick. “It’s also really good at preventing people from getting hospitalized, and so they may have a less severe case of influenza, still have the runny nose, fever, [but] may not end up in the hospital with influenza,” Dr. Lakey explained. He added that if enough people get their shots, society is protected, a situation physicians call community immunity. This phenomenon “can decrease the number of people that are transmitting the virus and decrease the number of individuals that are going to infect me, my family, your family, from that circulating virus.” By getting your shots you can avoid getting sick altogether, or at least make the illness shorter, more bearable, and less dangerous.

The dawn of 2020 ushered in many newsworthy headlines, but few have turned the heads of the masses as sharply as the arrival of a novel coronavirus that was first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. In late 2019, Chinese authorities identified the new virus, which has resulted in scores of confirmed cases in China, and additional cases identified in a growing number of international locations. Both the World Health Organization and The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have closely monitored the coronavirus, which was
named COVID-19 in midFebruary 2020. The public is understandably concerned, but educating oneself about COVID-19 and coronaviruses in general can assuage some fears. What is a coronavirus? Medical News Today reports that coronaviruses typically affect the respiratory tracts of mammals. Coronaviruses are responsible for between 15 and 30 percent of common colds. They’re also associated with pneumonia and severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS. Coronaviruses were given their name based on the crown-like
projections on their surfaces (in Latin, “corona” means “halo” or “crown”). Coronavirus antibodies do not last or work for very long, so a person who becomes ill can catch the same virus again a few months later. Also, antibodies for one strain of coronavirus may not be effective against other strains. What is COVID-19? In 2019, a new type of coronavirus not previously identified was discovered in China. Like other coronaviruses, this virus, COVID-19, can be spread easily from person to person, particularly through CORONAVIRUS, page 4

CORONAVIRUS Continued from page 3 Starr County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer, J.L. Gonzalez participated at the Grulla Elementary Career Fair. Officer Gonzalez was on hand to speak to the students on the ins and outs of law enforcement. Activities such as this one helps students to gain knowledge on different career paths which can help guide them to make career choices. Starr County Sheriff Rene “Orta” Fuentes and his staff work diligently with all area schools to provide students with information on various topics important to their development.
respiratory droplets acquired when someone with the virus coughs or sneezes. Most often people need to be within six feet of the infected person for contraction. The CDC says that COVID-19 also is believed to be spread from animals to people. It’s currently unclear if a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching his or her own mouth, nose or eyes. Those confirmed as having the virus reported illnesses ranging from mild symptoms like fever, cough and shortness of breath to more severe illness. Reactions to COVID-19 can differ from individual to individual. It’s
believed that symptoms of COVID-19 can appear in as few as two days or as long as 14 after exposure. Those who have been in China or around others who have visited from China and are experiencing cold or flu symptoms are advised call their physicians. Prevention and Treatment The WHO says that if a person is healthy, he or she only needs to wear a mask if this person is taking care of another with a suspected COVID-19 infection. One also should wear a mask if he or she is coughing or sneezing. Doctors advise that frequent handwashing, and in the absence of warm, soapy water, alcoholbased sanitizers that are at least 60 percent alcohol can be effective
in preventing transmission of COVID-19. Also avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. Currently there is no specific antiviral treatment for the disease; people should receive supportive care for symptoms. However, research into antiviral drugs, such as those for HIV and influenza, are being tested for their potential efficacy against COVID-19, Research into developing a vaccine for this novel coronavirus also is ongoing. Concerned individuals should speak with their healthcare providers for accurate, up-to-date information about COVID-19 as global health organizations continue to monitor conditions and treatments.
Did you know? When shopping for auto insurance, drivers may be most concerned by the bottom lines on estimates they receive from potential providers. However, the Insurance Information Institute recommends that drivers also investigate a company’s reputation and stability before purchasing an auto insurance policy.
Rating companies like AM Best (www.ambest.com) and Standard & Poor’s (www. standardandpoors.com/ratings) vet insurance companies in terms of their financial stability. In addition, government organizations may be able to provide potential policyholders with information regarding the history of consumer complaints
filed against certain insurance providers. That history, coupled with information regarding a given firm’s financial stability, can give drivers an accurate picture of insurance providers and whether they’re trustworthy or simply the most affordable option on the market.

Starr County Teachers FCU celebrated their 52nd Annual meeting of the membership on Wednesday February 26, 2020 at the KC Hall in Rio Grande City
Approximately 300 members from San Isidro ISD, Roma ISD and Rio Grande City ISD were present. Mrs. Elma Compean, Chairperson of the Board welcomed all members in attendance. She thanked everyone for coming and hoped everyone would have a great time and enjoy a delicious dinner. The great music was provided by the Rio Grande City High School Jazz Band under the direction of Mr. Alfredo Cortinas. The hall was nicely decorated with beige and gold table cloths and chair covers, and yellow rose arrangements adorned the large candelabras throughout the hall. This year’s theme was dedicated to Ms. Emma L. Gonzalez who has been with the credit union for 36 years. Hired as the Manager in 1984 then her title changed to President/CEO 10 years later. At the main entrance a table adorned with pictures of Ms. Gonzalez and of the credit union’s accomplishments throughout the years. After introduction of directors and staff members Ms. Gonzalez made a few announcements to the membership. She gave them an update of the financial condition of the credit union as of the end of 2019. The credit union continues to prosper with a healthy capital ratio, plenty of liquidity to meet members financial needs and continues to promote their products and services and hope to add other products and services later this year. Ms. Emma Gonzalez then proceeded to give one final comment, she officially announced that after 36 years this was her last annual meeting that she would take part in for she would be retiring in August 2020. In her brief speech she mentioned how this has been a challenging journey. A journey that she has enjoyed since the beginning, for it has been both memorable and rewarding. She went on to thank the membership for their loyal commitment to the credit union and a very special thank you to those directors that were there when she was interviewed on that fateful day that would mark the beginning of her 36-year journey. Remembering Mr. Arturo Montemayor (may he rest in peace), whom was Chairman of the Board at the time, Mr. Walter Watson, Mr. Julio Saenz, Mr. Silvestre Reyna, Mr. Raul Munoz, Mr. Victor Ramirez, and Mr. Sabas Ozuna. She went on to say how she has enjoyed being part of this unique yet member friendly financial institution that she has had the privilege of running for 36 years. The number of people she has met along the way and the lives that she has touched has been an experience that is priceless. Ms. Gonzalez will continue to work and take care of the credit union members until the end of August 2020. We wish her the best in her retirement.

number of young children who die in bathtub-related accidents each year, the tub is enough of a threat to youngsters that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children four years of age and younger always be accompanied by a parent or caregiver when in the bathtub. It only takes a moment for playful bath time fun to turn tragic, so parents should never leave young children unattended. Parents should make sure to run a supply check before placing children in the bathtub to ensure they do not forget a bath towel or another supply and should not leave children unattended in the bathroom, even if kids are not yet in the tub, to go and find a necessary supply. In addition, parents who feel as though they need to exit the bathroom, however briefly, once a bath has started should first take their child out of the tub, wrap them in a towel and drain the tub before taking the child with them and leaving the room.

Call it jicamilla or Berlandier’s nettlespurge Its scientific name is Jatropha cathartica and I suspect it’s not well known by any name. I first saw one while we were evaluating a ranch which eventually became Las Estrellas Preserve (the Star Cactus Ranch) after being purchased by The Nature Conservancy. The ranch constitutes their effort to conserve
the endangered star cactus. E v e r y ecosystem has a specific combination of plant species. Jatropha cathartica is often found in ecosystems with star cacti, manfredas, Fitch’s hedgehog cacti, and horse crippler cacti, none of these are common plants, along with some typical Valley
shrubs. The soils in such ecosystems are mostly clay. Those who enjoy growing succulents find jicamillas attractive and unusual. The 8 to 10 inch flower stalks are tipped with a cluster of small, bright rosered flowers with five petals each. One oddity is that the individual flowers are unisexual but in each cluster will be several of each sex, usually in a ratio of about 3 male to 1 female. When pollinated the female flowers produce r o u n d , green, three seeded pods. Blooms can occur from February through November but are most common in the summer. The leaves are a pubescent gray-green and palmately five lobed, like fingers of your hand. Each lobe is pointed and bears a
jagged set of teeth. One of its most distinctive features is a very large tuber found just below ground level. Those who grow them for display sometimes plant them with the tuber above ground leaving only the lower taproot in the ground. While it elicits curiosity viewing, it seems to be a bizarre practice to me. I grow one with the tuber almost entirely underground and it seems very happy. The plants are perennial but go dormant in the winter and lose all their stems and leaves. I should warn you that, while it’s called jicamilla and has a large tuber, it should not be confused with jicama which is found in grocery stores. They’re not even in the same genus. Jicamilla is NOT edible. It’s a member of the spurge family. I close by noting that Jatropha cathartica is another species endemic to Texas and a northern portion of Mexico. The Valley does contain an amazing diversity of wildthings!
Gardening attracts new devotees year after year. While Baby Boomers may spend more on gardening than any other demographic, even millennials are getting on the gardening bandwagon. A 2016 National Gardening Survey from the National Gardening Market Research Company found the average amount spent on backyard or balcony gardening projects exceeded $400 per household. When it comes to outfitting a gardening shed, gardeners will not want to be without certain tools and gear. · Digging shovel: A roundedblade digging shovel is needed to plant shrubs and trees as well as to excavate areas in a landscape.
· Rake: A rake can be used to clear the ground, remove thatch and leaves from a lawn and level soil in a garden bed. · Hand tools: Hand tools, such as a hand fork and trowel, are essential for small digging jobs, especially when working with flower pots or containers. · Edging spade: This flat-blade shovel is handy to have around because of its versatility. Edging spades can slice turf, edge gardens and cut through roots. · Pruners: Sharpened pruners can cut through stems and branches effortlessly. · Hose: Choose a high-quality hose that is lightweight and durable, as hoses will always be necessary.
