Billy Canales has been in the automobile business for over a half a century. He has worked in practically every department of a dealership. Because of his tenure in the business, he was elected as a member of the National Parts Council. This gave him the opportunity to meet a lot of people at the national level. This helped him purchase the Chevrolet/ GMC Dealership in Rio Grande City in 1994. Twenty years later in 2014, he built a brand-new state of the art dealership right across the street. He and his wife Dolores moved to Rio Grande City and focused on being a part of the community. They joined the Chamber of Commerce and Billy served as President for several years. He headed up the Starr County Youth Fair’s Wild Game dinner for several years. He and Dolores were even the King and Queen of the Youth Fair Christmas Parade. Billy serves on the boards of Valley Partnership,

When Billy first hired Advertir, Inc. to assist him with his advertising he told them if you could cut his “pump-ins” in half he would be successful. People in Starr County were not buying vehicles in Starr County. They assigned the project to their creative director in Dallas and launched the “Come Home” campaign. 20 years later, using a very consistent television campaign featuring members of the family, Rio Motor Company is out selling most of the other Chevrolet dealers on a monthly basis. They are always at the top of GM’s quota attainment list. The Canales Family continues to deliver their signature lines, “Hi, I’m Billy Canales”, “And that’s on both Chevy and GMC in one convenient location, Rio Motors” and “Come home to Rio Motor Company in Rio Grande City”.

RGCCISD Libraries Celebrating the Birthday of Dr. Seuss Two Roma ISD Teams Take Home Second

Each year, RGCCISD Libraries celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2, which also doubles as Read across America Day. This week Cat in the Hat inspired hats will adorn libraries and students heads. All elementary librarians especially & all librarians will

enjoy planning events where children can enjoy stories, games, crafts and silly Seuss fun. Dr. Seuss was an American writer and illustrator whose given name was Theodor Seuss Geisel. He published over 60 books that sold over 600 million copies, and were translated into more than 20 languages by the time of his death. The Cat n the Hat was Seuss’s 13th children’s book. According to Random House, Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat because he was worried children were not learning to read. The book was an immediate hit, and sold nearly a million copies from 1957-1960. Geisel’s birthday,

March 2, has been adopted as the annual date for National Read across America Day, an initiative on reading created by the National Education Association. “You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read with a child.”~ Dr. Seuss Historical information gathered from Seussville.com and Encyclopedia Britannica.

Place At Regional Battle Of The Books Comp.

Congratulations to our Roma ISD students who placed highly at the Regional Battle of the Books Competition at Region One. Roma High School earned second place at their competition. Ramiro Barrera Middle School was part of a three-way tie for second place at their competition.

In order to compete, the students had to read the five award-winning books selected for their grade levels and try out to qualify for their school’s team by demonstrating knowledge of each book. Upon selection to their school’s team, students re-read the books and discussed them to determine

important details, themes and interpretations of each book. During the district competition, student teams work together to respond to a variety of random questions about each book. All participants should be proud of the hard work they put into preparing for this rigorous competition!

PUBLIC NOTICE CITY OF LA GRULLA TEXAS COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT PROGRAM The City of La Grulla is giving notice of the City’s intent to submit Texas Community Development Block Grant Program grant applications for a (Community Development Fund) grant request of $305,822 for Street Improvements in the City of La Grulla. Tick season is upon us! Beware! There are five species of ticks here in the Valley and they carry virulent diseases. The species are American dog tick, black-legged tick, brown dog tick, Gulf Coast tick, and lone star tick. Each species carries one or more of the following diseases: Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, anaplasmosis,

babesiosis, Lyme disease, Rickettsia Parker’s rickettsiosis, STARI, and ehrlichiosis. If that list doesn’t scare you, it should. All ticks are Arachnida with eight legs and look much alike. If you wander through the brush, as I like to do, you’re likely to encounter some. They hang on grasses and bushes waiting for some animal to come along and brush against them. I recently found one crawling on my dog Pal’s back. Adult ticks may be nearly 1/4 inch long and can be found and removed by searching your body after a hike. Unfortunately, the young nymphs are tiny, like

a period at the end of a sentence. They can be easily missed. Deep Woods Off or any other repellent containing DEET may be helpful. Ticks want to suck your blood, as mosquitos do, only it’s in slow motion and they expand in size as they feast. If a tick does attach itself, here’s how to remove a tick: 1. Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin’s surface as possible. 2. Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Don’t twist or jerk the tick; this can cause the mouthparts to break off and remain in the skin. If this happens, remove the mouth-parts with tweezers. If you are unable to remove the mouth easily with clean tweezers, leave it alone and let the skin heal. 3. After removing the tick, thoroughly clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol, an iodine scrub, or soap and water.

PUBLIC NOTICE

Pursuant to the provisions contained in ARTICLE V, Section Five (5) of the Texas Abandoned Motor Vehicle Act, we are serving notice to the owners and/or lien holders that the below described motor vehicle, has been taken into custody by Rivera’s Towing. Failure of an owner or lien holder to claim vehicle within twenty (20) days after date of this notice and make payment of storage charges resulting from the placing of the vehicle in custody shall constitute a waiver of the right to reclaim vehicle. Please contact Yesenia Morales at (956) 352-6407, 1315 US 83 Rio Grande City, TX 78582. VSF: 0652724VSF IMPOUND DATE: 02/25/2019 2015 CARRY-ON TRAILER BLACK VIN# 4YMUL0814FT019807

4. Dispose of a live tick by submersing it in alcohol, placing it in a sealed bag/container, wrapping it tightly in tape, or flushing it down the toilet. Never crush a tick with your fingers. (Thanks to the CDC for those instructions. It’s the only approved method!) If you are bitten by a tick and removed it, watch for any fever or rash and, if they occur, get medical attention! I’d gladly be rid of all tick species.

Air Quality And Heart Health According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, studies have shown that air pollution can trigger heart attacks and strokes. The threat posed by air pollution is greater among people who have or have had coronary artery disease, angina, heart attack, bypass surgery or an angioplasty, heart failure, stroke or transient ischemic attack, or blockages in the arteries of the neck or legs. People who have internal cardiac defibrillators also may be at greater risk of heart attack or stroke due to air pollution. While it’s common to assume that air pollution is only a problem for people who live in large cities, the American Heart Association warns against making such assumptions, noting that air pollution can be traced to a host of sources, including wildfires and cooking with wood stoves, that can be found outside of major cities. The AHA also notes that researchers believe pollution has inflammatory effects on the heart that can cause cardiovascular problems.
