STC Starr Psych Club- Focus Group on Substance Abuse

On February, the Starr County in a Focus Group on Substance Campus Psychology Club of Abuse. Irwin Mendoza, South Texas College participated Representative from Behavioral Health Solutions of South Texas, was invited as Guest Speaker. Mr. Mendoza provided an overview of the services provided by Behavioral Health Solutions of South Texas (Prevention Resource Center 11) and the 19 counties it serves. Mr. Mendoza explained to the students that a focus group is “a systematic way to collect qualitative, or descriptive, data through small group discussion.” Funeral Home Memorial Funeral Home He then elaborated on the 301 E. 2nd. St. 101 AR Sanchez Sr. Dr. Rio Grande City, Tx. 78582 Roma, Tx. 78584 benefits obtained from a focus “Serving Our Community For Over 86 Years” (956) 487-2525 “Caring for you & your loved ones in your time of need ” (956) 847-7008 group (such as, ask questions that might be hard for people to answer in writing, clarify participant responses through follow up questions, create rich dialogue, generate narrative information that is compelling and easy to understand, inexpensive and

easy to organize) and where they are used (market research, political research, social science/ psychology). After also reviewing the logistics of a focus group, Mr. Mendoza served as facilitator of the focus group on substance abuse at STC Starr County Campus with the psychology club members present (about 50). The members felt comfortable sharing what they knew about drugs (alcohol, marijuana, synthetic / spice, prescription pills) and provided excellent feedback about their experience participating in a focus group. Eli Sarabia and Alex Sarabia, STC Psychological Science Faculty and Starr Psych Club Co-Advisors, along with all the club members, appreciate Mr. Mendoza for serving as guest speaker and conducting this focus group.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is urging Texans to keep safety a top priority as they prepare for this year’s Spring Break. Texans should be mindful that increased traffic often accompanies Spring Break, so the department is urging drivers to obey all traffic laws and use extra caution when driving during the next few weeks. Additionally, DPS troopers and local law enforcement in the coastal areas of Texas will be enhancing enforcement efforts during Spring Break, watching for speeders, drunk drivers and seat-belt violators. DPS offers the following tips for safe travel during the Spring Break holiday: •Do not drink and drive. Make alternate travel plans if you are consuming alcohol. •Slow down – especially in bad weather, construction areas, heavy traffic and unfamiliar areas. •Eliminate distractions while driving, including the use of mobile devices. Texas law prohibits using a portable wireless device to read, write or send an electronic message unless the vehicle is stopped. •Buckle up everyone in the vehicle – it’s the law. •Slow down or move over for police, fire, EMS and Texas Department of Transportation

vehicles and tow trucks stopped on the side of the road with emergency lights activated – it’s the law. Also, show the same courtesy to fellow drivers stopped along the road. •Drive defensively, as holiday travel may present additional challenges. •Don’t drive fatigued – allow plenty of time to reach your destination. •If you see a road hazard or if you observe anything suspicious, report it to the nearest law enforcement agency. •Before your trip begins, make sure your vehicle is properly maintained and always double check to make sure all cargo is secure. •Monitor weather and road conditions wherever you are traveling. In the event of inclement weather, use extra caution on roadways. For road conditions in Texas, visit https:// drivetexas.org. Additionally, U.S. citizens traveling abroad should always check the U.S. Department of State website for the latest security information related to their travel destination. Those traveling out of the country can also register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program by visiting http://travel.state. gov/content/passports/english/ country.html.

5th Anniversary Mass In Loving Memory of

Reyna G. Sepulveda

01-06-35 † 03-15-13 If Tears Could Build A Stairway If tears could build a stairway and thoughts a memory lane I’d walk right up to heaven and bring you home again. No farewell words were spoken, no time to say good-bye, you were gone before I knew it and only God knows why. My heart’s still active in sadness and secret tears still flow, what it meant to lose you no one can ever know. But now I know you want us to mourn for you no more, to remember all the happy times, life still has much in store. Since you’ll never be forgotten I pledge to you today a hallowed place within my heart is where you’ll always stay. God knows why, with chilling touch, death gathers those we love so much, and what now seems so strange and dim will all be clear when we meet Him. I knew you for a moment.

Mass will be celebrated on Sun. March 11, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at Immaculate Conception Church in Rio Grande City, Tx.

Roma ISD PE Department Secures $20,000 La Union Elementary Announces Their Grant for Obesity Awareness, Education PTO Valentine’s Day Raffle Winners Congratulations to Roma ISD PE Coordinator Tavo Cantu and his Roma ISD PE Department Team for securing a new $20,000 grant from the Department of State Health Services to continue their work on the Border Obesity Work Plan, which is aimed at educating students about obesity issues and helping students learn to live healthier lifestyles. For two consecutive years, Cantu and his team have secured $10,000 to $15,000 grants to start and keep the initiative going. Based on the results of their work and advancement with the students since 2016, the grant was renewed and increased again. “I speak on behalf of myself and my fellow board members when I say that we are so proud of the work Mr. Cantu and his department are doing with our students,” said Roma ISD School Board Secretary Dagoberto “Dago” Salinas. “It is wonderful to see them working together as a team to tackle obesity. We are also very impressed with the ability of Mr. Cantu to find and maintain an outside revenue source for this program, which is so important in our community.” “Now with this money, the funding we have secured totals $45,000 in free monies to help our students and community get healthier and live longer lives,” said Tavo Cantu. “We are completely focused on tracking our work and showing the positive results so that we can be a role model for other PE Programs across the Valley and state because obesity is a problem facing many students and their family members. If we can help some of our students make better choices and live healthier lives, all this work is worth it.” Through their program, Roma ISD’s PE coaches work to ensure that all students have walked at least 30 miles during the school year. The department purchases

The coaches are also focused on increasing physical activity through aerobic exercise and stretching. New to the program this year, the department will work with internal resources to develop and distribute informational fliers and videos to promote healthy eating choices and information on living a healthy lifestyle during each month during the school year. “It was great to hear from Coach Cantu that not only was their grant renewed, but increased because it just shows that their hard work is really paying off; and we couldn’t be more proud of them,” said Roma ISD Superintendent Carlos Guzman. “It is rare to see a department come up with a grant like this on their own and I hope that other groups see what is possible with planning, conceptualization and execution. I commend them and look forward to seeing the fruits of their work as our students lead the way in making healthier lifestyles choices in our community.”

G r e a t e r roadrunners are not easily frightened by people but, at Rancho Lomitas where I live, one has actually become quite friendly. For the past several weeks he has come, within a couple of feet, begging for mealworms which I often toss to him. Visiting birdwatchers are amazed and are pleased to get really closeup photos. I have no explanation for why this roadrunner is so at ease. In fact, since roadrunners catch and eat small birds, I’ve trained my little dog Pal to chase roadrunners away. He dutifully does so but never far enough to catch one. Roadrunners can run up to nearly 20 m.p.h. and they can fly when there’s a need but prefer not to. When Pal’s not around, the Roadrunner quickly returns. I’ve named it “Snatch” because it’s so quick to snatch morsels I toss. I refer to “it” because roadrunners are monomorphic, that is, both sexes look alike. The only time you can be sure of the sex is when they’re mating. There is one possible field-mark that distinguishes them. Behind the eye is a patch of bare skin which, from front to back, is white and red-orange in males and blue, white, and red-orange in females. While it’s not readily seen, if you spot some blue just behind the eye you may be seeing a female. It’s believed roadrunners mate for life. For those who aren’t familiar

with them, they’re like a skinny chicken. The iris of the eye is yellow. They’re about 2 feet long, have a long, straight tail, longish neck and legs, and a blue-back crest which is often raised and lowered. The beak is long, with a down curved tip and is hinged below the eye so it can be opened very wide. The plumage is a mottling of black, tan and white on the top and sides while the belly is white. A roadrunner’s call is rather distinctive. It’s a short, guttural trill. It’s a little like the sound you would make if you loosened your lips and blew through them. A roadrunners feet are of interest. They have four toes, two pointed each way so that the tracks look like XX. The outer two toes on each foot are the longest. I enjoy identifying tracks of snakes, birds, insects, etc. I’ve wondered if you can tell which way a roadrunner was traveling when it made some tracks. I can tell that from most critters I track. Carefully observing Snatch’s toes reveals that the forward outer toe is noticeably longer than the rear

outer toe. I’m anxious to see how that affects the tracks. Curiosity leads to many activities doesn’t it? As you walk about at Rancho Lomitas you may occasionally see a rock with pieces of broken tree-snail scattered around it. That’s a roadrunner feeding site. Roadrunners collect tree-snails and smash them against the rock to get at the snail inside. They may also smash lizards, small snakes, mice, insects, scorpions, and even small rattlesnakes to kill them before eating them. Being omnivores, roadrunners also eat some fruits and seeds. When nesting, incubation is done mostly by the male because his temperature doesn’t drop as low as the female’s does at night. The nest, about 5 to 15 feet from the ground in a tree or shrub is built of twigs and lined with finer stuff. The 3 to 6 eggs when hatched yield young that both parents care for. Nesting may occur 3 times a year. Snakes, coyotes and hawks, among others, prey on roadrunners whose life span may be 5 to 7 years in the wild. I wish Snatch many years so we can enjoy its company.
