RGC High School Students Compete Roma Middle Student Council RGCCISD Athletic Department Recognizes Daniel in National Ocean Science Bowl Cleans Up Roma Park for Earth Day “Danny” Vasquez at the 6th Annual Rey Ramirez Relays

The National Ocean Science Bowl: Loggerhead Challenge is a high school quiz bowl competition held in Port Aransas, Texas in partnership with the Consortium for Ocean Leadership. The competition challenges teams of five from schools all over Texas in a headto-head test of knowledge in marine science, policy, history, and renewable energy practices. This year, Mark Lopez and Bridgette Ramirez took 10 students from Rio Grande City High School to the South Texas Regional Competition for the first time in the school’s history, where the two teams went up against 15 other teams from high schools all over central and south Texas. The team consisting of Aisha Garcia, Maria Lozano, Cecilia Gonzalez, Colleen Canales, and Victor Vargas tied for 5th place out of the 15 teams, falling only to the team that eventually went on to win the entire competition. The team consisting of Josie Chapa, Horacio Rodriguez, Akane Benitez, Felipe Gutierrez, and Yvette Rivas scored the 5th most team points out of all teams, falling only one win short of the final tournament round. The schools in attendance this year were all in their 3rd, 4th, or 5th year of competition, each with a handful of students with at least one year of competition

experience under their belt. Despite this fact, our RGCHS Ocean Science Bowl Team was able to hold their own against these teams and represent our school and city with pride. Congratulations to the teams on their first Science Bowl competition.

The Roma Middle School Student Council decided to clean up the City Roma Community Park in honor of Earth Day. Students cleaned around the playground area and around the little league stands making the park a cleaner and safer environment for all children and players visiting the park. The Texas Say What! Youth Community Liaison provided RMS Student Council with various supplies in order to make this event a success. Thank you parents and advisers for making this event possible. (President: Andrik Garcia, Vice President: Roberto Muniz III, Secretary: Julian Barrera, and Parliamentarian: Valeria Ramirez, Advisors:, Mrs. Karina Eliserio, Mr. Jose R. Rio Grande City CISD Athletic Department recognizes Daniel “Danny” Vasquez at the 6th Annual Rey Ramirez Relays. Vasquez was a former Rio Grande City High School Track and Field coach with many accomplishments under his belt. In 1986, the Rio Grande City High School Boys Track and Field team won the District Championship and went on win Regionals. The team also produced state qualifiers in the long jump, 100 meters, 200 meters and 4 x 400 meter relay. Congratulations Mr. Vasquez on your recognition!

Beware the Dangers of Distracted Driving TxDOT Warns: Talk. Text. Crash.

On the first week of April Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Starr County brought the Passenger Safety Project’s Distracted Driving Simulator and Virtual Reality (VR) Goggles to teach teens at: La Grulla Middle School, Grulla High School, Roma High School, San Isidro High School, and South Texas College, the dangers of distracted driving. The simulator and VR Goggles are made possible through a grant from State Farm to the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Passenger Safety Project in cooperation with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) reports Yolanda Morado, Starr County

FCS Agent. The State Farm Distracted Driving Simulator and VR Goggles allow students to experience the dangers of texting and driving while in a realistic, but safe environment. Teens are also made aware of the main distraction for teen drivers – other teens in the vehicle! With technology at their fingertips, drivers are constantly faced with distractions, such

as talking or texting, which places their safety and that of others at serious risk. TxDOT’s Talk. Text. Crash. Campaign raises awareness of the dangers associated with distracted driving and encourages Texans to put down their cell phones while driving. While distraction affect drivers of all ages, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has found that hand-held cell phone

GRANDMOTHER You can have a grandmother patient kind and true. No other friend in all the world will be the same to you. When other friends forsake you, to grandmother you will return. For all her loving kindness she asks nothing in return. As we look upon her picture sweet memories we recall, of a face so full of sunshine and a smile for one and all. Sweet Jesus take this message to our dear grandmother up above, tell her how we miss her and give her all our love. 23rd Psalm The LORD is my Shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anointest my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

use is highest among 16- to 24-year-olds. This age group has the largest proportion of drivers who were distracted. In Texas, 46 percent of urban teens and 52 percent of rural teens talk on a cell phone while driving, and nearly the same percentage text while driving. (Texas A&M Transportation Institute). A study by AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety shows that distracted driving among teens was a factor in nearly 6 out of 10 moderate-tosevere teen crashes. Eliminating distractions and putting away cell phones while driving can and will save lives. Drivers are reminded to put away their cell phones and wait until they arrive at their destination to use their phone. Although cell phone use is the most easily recognized distraction, all in vehicle distractions are unsafe and can cause crashes or fatalities. Keep your eyes on the road and arrive alive! We want to thank Rio Grande City C.I.S.D., Roma I.S.D., San Isidro I.S.D., and South Texas College for their support in making arrangements and for training volunteers to help bring this life saving message to Starr County teens.

Team members not pictured are Lions Tony and Corina Vela. The RGC Lions Vision Screening Team conducted vision screening of 518, 3-6 year olds, enrolled in the Teaching and Mentoring Communities Program (TMC) 41 Headstart classrooms. The team used the state of the art Pedia Vision

Screening equipment developed by the University of Connecticut. The Pedia Vision camera sends a ray of light through the pupil of the eyes, photographs the back side of the eyes and immediately determines if a child, or adult, has normal vision or needs to be referred to a vision specialist for further evaluation. A print out of the abnormal eye is provided to the parents of students who need further evaluation. Lion Clubs throughout the United States and other countries use the Pedia Vision equipment to screen school children and adults, the focus being on 3-6 year olds in headstart and early headstart programs. The reason why the focus is on 3-6 year olds is that at this age vision acuity tends to fluctuate more than beyond six years of age. On an average, 15 to 20% of the children screened are referred for further study. In October 2016, the RGC Vision Screening Team screened all the headstart and early headstart children in the RGCCISD and in April screened the 3-6 year olds at Immaculate Conception School.

Destiny Bazan –Showcasing Career & Technical Education, Future Farmers of America & Grulla High School Achievement. Destiny Bazan is an amazing student, with a contagious smile and an easy going personality. You can definitely tell she enjoys school, academics and playing over 25 card games. However, she is serious about her showmanship animals. She has been motivated and inspired by her supportive parents and her brother Tommy. Destiny Bazan has been following the career path of Agriculture Science all throughout her High School years @ Grulla High School. Her senior year, she was able to place Grulla High School on the map with the following accolades: FFA District Competition Beef master heifer 1st class, Beef master Bull 3rd in class. At the San Antonio Livestock show and rodeo this year, her Beef master bull won 2nd place in its class. At the local

Starr County Youth Fair, held in Rio Grande City, her Beef master heifer also won 1st in class and her Beef master Bull also placed 1st in its class. (This is the 1st time; GHS has competed at the state level). The CTE department, GHS school administration and staff are extremely proud of Destiny Bazan and her peers. The department is extremely grateful to her CTE instructor Mr. Sixto, Flores, Jr. for motivating and encouraging the students to pursue the agriculture science career pathway. Grulla High

School is a fairly new high school with no more than 5 years in its formation. Mr. Sixto Flores endured many trials and tribulations to get the FFA Chapter number cleared with a Professor from Texas A& M University. This would not have been possible without the assistance of the CTE collaborative partners: Mrs. Yolanda Morado, Starr County Extension Agent, Mr. Douglas Anderson, Starr County Youth Fair President and Mrs. Randy Martin, RHS Ag. Teacher. GHS students competing at Huntsville, Texas were Bryan Sanchez Freshman, Yubizdely Tanguma, Junior and Destiny Bazan Sr. Qualifying, but not able to attend were Joe Luis De La Rosa Sr. (The CTE program is under the direction of Mrs. Maria Adelina G. The children prepared the soil and are planting a spring vegetable garden according to Yolanda Morado, Starr County FCS Agent. This is just the beginning of the project they will care for the garden and eventually harvest the fruits of their labor. Hector Guerra - Better Living for Texans program assistant lead the garden project with the support of the Boys & Girls Ac2E Middle School is proud to recognize the March 2017 Falcons Club staff and the enthusiastic of the Month. Congratulations to all! Keep up the excellent work and children seen here holding up continue to soar! the seedlings ready to go into the prepared raised beds. Along with the fun of learning, gardening teaches children valuable lessons about “patience” Description: Medical Office Receptionist

as they wait for vegetables to grow, “responsibility” as they see how necessary their care is to the garden. They learn the importance of nurturing a life of a plant and what it takes to keep something alive. Gardening is also a great way to exercise, 20 minutes of

gardening work equals one mile of walking. One of the most important things the children will learn from planting this vegetable garden is where food comes from. Children are fascinated in seeing food when it’s pulled from the ground and they are more

likely to eat it. Days of Taste are planned for the near future for this group of boys and girls. They will experience how food weaves itself through the ground, to the table and into their tummies.

RIO GRANDE CITY FORD ATTENTION!

Prayer to Our Lady Undoer Of Knots Virgin Mary, Mother of Fair Love, Mother who never abandons a child in need, Mother whose hands never cease to work for Her children because they are moved by the Divine Love and Infinite Mercy that exist in your heart, turn your compassionate eyes toward me and see the snarl of knots that exist in my life. You know just how much despair and pain they cause me. You know how paralyzed I am by them. Mary, Mother to whom God has given the charge of undoing the knots in the lives of His children, I place the ribbon of my life into Your hands. No one, not even the Evil One himself can take it away from Your merciful hands. In your hands there is no knot that cannot be undone. Powerful Mother, by Your grace and intercession with Your Son Jesus, my Savior, receive today this “knot” (specify it if possible). I beg You to undo it now and forever for the glory of God. You are my hope. You are the sole consolation that God gives me, a fortress for my weaknesses, the healing of my miseries, and my deliverance from all that keeps me from Christ. Hear my plea. Keep me, guide me and protect me. You are my only safe refuge. Our Lady Undoer of Knots, pray for me! Amen! L. C.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS

As part of Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is reminding drivers to use extra caution around motorcycles on roads and highways. The special awareness month is observed during the month of May. “Driving requires your utmost attention and focus, whether you’re in a car or on a motorcycle, and it is critical that every driver do their part to help ensure Texas roadways are safe for everyone,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “We urge all drivers to use extra caution around motorcyclists. Additionally, in order to better protect themselves on the road, motorcyclists should wear protective gear and always obey all traffic laws.” DPS recommends that all drivers “Share the Road: Look Twice for Motorcycles,” which is a motorcycle safety public awareness campaign launched by our partner agency, the Texas Department of Transportation. Based on the fact that riders are more exposed and can easily be overlooked due to their size, motorcyclists are inherently more

vulnerable while on the road. In 2016, 493 people were killed while riding a motorcycle or scooter, accounting for approximately 13 percent of all crash fatalities for the year. In many cases, these fatalities were the result of crashes between a motorcycle and a car or truck. Collisions with a motorcycle commonly occur at intersections and while changing lanes, and all drivers should use extra caution during these situations. Drivers and motorcyclists can significantly reduce their chances of being involved in a serious or fatal crash by adhering to basic safety measures, including: Perform a visual check for motorcycles by checking mirrors and blind spots before entering or exiting a lane of traffic, and at intersections. • Always signal your intentions before changing lanes or merging with traffic. • Allow more following distance – three or four seconds – when behind a motorcycle, so the motorcyclist has enough time to maneuver or stop in an emergency. • Wear protective gear when

STARRC OUNTY TOWNC RIER, MAY10,2017,S ECTIONI I,P AGE3

Coachwhip snakes are active during warm weather With the return of our hot weather, the snakes are active again. During the winter months they retire to an animal burrow where they don’t freeze but do become cold enough to be very sluggish. Snakes are cold-blooded which means they can’t maintain a normal body temperature as we do. Their temperature simply changes with their environment. With the warmth of the weather penetrating well into the ground, where they spent the winter, they emerge and begin a new hunting season. Our venomous (poisonous) snakes here in the Valley are (1) the Texas coral snake which is rarely seen and whose mouth and fangs are too small, under ordinary circumstances, to bite a person, (2) the shy little desert massasauga for which there are no records of its biting a human, and (3) the dangerous western diamondback rattlesnake with which most of us a quite familiar. If you see another species of snake, it’s nonvenomous and should be protected because it’s no threat to us and very probably beneficial by eating insects and rodents. One of our most common snakes is called the western coachwhip and I’d like to share a few thoughts about it. An adult coachwhip is about 4 to 5 feet long and typically a pale tan color. There are several other snake species which resemble it so look for the following field marks: • The body is slim with the tail being noticeably long and very thin. • The upper surface of the body is brown to yellow-tan with some darker but faint cross markings of brown. Usually these bands are only a scale or two wide.

• Individual scales on the tail may be light on the forward half and darker on the back half giving the tail the appearance of having been woven like a coachwhip, hence the name coachwhip snake. • If you get the opportunity to see the ventral (bottom) surface, you may notice two rows of dark spots along the anterior (front) portion of the body. If you’re lucky enough to observe one without its having seen you, you may see that it hunts by slithering through the brush and grasses with its head held high off the ground searching for prey. Food consists of lizards, small birds, insects, small snakes, frogs, small turtles, and baby mammals. Observations indicate that, while

coachwhips feigning death when grabbed but writhing, biting and defecating are most common. Before capture they may shake their tails and, if they’re in dry grass, it may sound like a rattlesnakes warning rattle. Here at Ranch Lomitas, we’ve seen and identified eleven species of snakes. Some of them are truly beautiful creatures and all, including the venomous ones, are beneficial. I hope you’ll have the joy of seeing some of them as you experience the wonders of our thorny brush.

Requirements: Applicant must pass a thorough background check (employment & criminal) and a pre-employment drug test. High school diploma or GED is required. Ideal candidate must be energetic, imaginative, well organized, and capable of functioning effectively in a very independent situation. coachwhips are visual hunters, they can also stalk prey by scent. If threatened, they can slither through the grass at about 4 miles per hour and then slip into a burrow or under rocks or logs. One of my first encounters with a western coachwhip was while driving with some friends along a ranch road and seeing it cross the road in front of us. A herpetologist who was with us jumped out and tried to catch it but it disappeared. A lady in the car shouted, “Look, up in the tree!” There it was, stretched out on the canopy of upper branches of a 12 foot tree beside the road. They’re excellent climbers. By shaking a few branches we got it down and the snake expert grabbed it. It squirmed mightily and tried to bite him while excreting foul smelling feces which got all over his hands. It was typical coachwhip defensive behavior. We took a close look at the snake and released it. Coachwhip bites may cause a few nasty scratches but aren’t poisonous. There are a few records of
