Rio Grande City Native and Rio Grande City High School graduate Rattler Class of 1949, Army Private First Class Herschel M. Riggs was killed in action July 16, 1950 in the Kum River area of South Korea. U.S. military officials have identified another set of previously unidentified remains of a soldier killed in the Korean War – and he is a soldier from the Rio Grande Valley. 18-year-old Army Private First Class Herschel Riggs of Rio Grande City was declared missing in action in July of 1950 following combat actions against North Korean forces. A set of remains had been retrieved in October 1950 and buried at the National Memorial of the Pacific in Honolulu. The remains were disinterred in 2017, and experts using DNA, dental, and other analyses were able to confirm they were those of Private Riggs. A formal burial service for Riggs will be held May 25th in Pearsall, about 100 miles north of Laredo After 69 years of missing in action, he is finally coming home to Texas. Private First Class Riggs was a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry

Division, Unites States Army. Herschel is survived by his nieces and nephews Marvin Saenz and wife Isabel, Liviar Hernandez and husband Gilbert, Lillie Saenz and Rosendo Saenz. He is preceded by his parents Herschel and Lillie (Lund) Riggs, sister Norma Saenz and husband Cosme, nephews Samuel Garcia and Roberto Saenz, grandmother Catarina Lund, aunts Emma Lund and Kate Lund, and uncles George Lund, Johnny Lund and Sonny Lund.
