Mental Health Awareness has been observed every year since 1949. Mental Health Awareness Month is a time to fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for policies that support the millions of people in the U.S. affected by mental illness.

According to recent estimates, 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year, and less than half receive treatment.

This year, NAMI is celebrating Mental Health Awareness Month with the More Than Enough campaign!

It’s an opportunity for all of us to

come together and remember the inherent value we each hold – no matter our diagnosis, appearance, socioeconomic status, background, or ability.

It is important that every person to know, no matter what, they are inherently worthy of more than enough life, love, and healing. Showing up, just as you are, for yourself and the people around you is more than enough.

Tobacco may not seem as popular as it once was, but the World Health Organization notes that 17 percent of the global population uses tobacco.

If it seems as though fewer people are smoking cigarettes, that’s not an incorrect interpretation. According to the Tobacco Atlas, the number of cigarettes smoked worldwide has been decreasing slowly since sales peaked in 2012. However, cigarettes are not the only tobacco product on the market, and the decline in cigarette sales does not necessarily mean consumers are avoiding tobacco altogether. In fact, some may simply be vaping, which is the term used to describe the usage of e-cigarettes. Though vaping is sometimes described as a safe alternative to cigarettes, such a characterization could be somewhat misleading, as various public health agencies caution

What to know about vaping

against the use of any tobacco products, including e-cigarettes. A greater understanding of vaping, including its potential connection to cancer, could help consumers make more informed decisions.

What is vaping?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, e-cigarettes produce an aerosol that usually contains flavored nicotine, which is the addictive ingredient in cigarettes and other popular tobacco products. Additional chemicals are employed to make the aerosol, which e-cigarette users inhale into their lungs.

It’s important to note that even the term “vaping” might be misleading. The American Cancer Society notes that “vaping” gives the impression that e-cigarettes produce a vapor that is then inhaled. But vaping produces an aerosol that contains tiny particles.

That aerosol is not the same thing

as a vapor. Does vaping produce a secondhand effect?

Most cigarette smokers are familiar with the dangers of secondhand smoke. That danger is so significant that it’s now illegal to smoke indoors in many areas of the world. The CDC reports that vaping poses a similar threat, as bystanders near someone who is vaping can breathe in the aerosol when e-cigarette users exhale. Is vaping linked to cancer?

The ACS notes that the chemicals in the aerosol produced when smoking e-cigarettes may contain formaldehyde, a cancercausing substance that can form if the e-liquid overheats or an insufficient amount of liquid is reaching the heating element. Though the CDC notes that e-cigarettes can potentially benefit smokers who are not pregnant if used as a complete substitute

for cigarettes and other smoked tobacco products, the organization also emphasizes that more research is necessary before scientists can understand the longterm effects of vaping. In addition, the CDC reports that e-cigarettes are not safe for youth, young adults, pregnant adults, or adults who do not currently use tobacco products.

Smoking cigarettes has long been known to increase risk for various cancers. Vaping may be a less harmful alternative to smoking for current smokers, but various public health agencies still warn that avoiding tobacco entirely is the safest option.

Starr County

Dr. Mario E. Ramirez grew up in Roma, Texas attended Rio Grande City high school and graduated in 1942. He then enrolled at The University of Texas at Austin. In 1944, he accepted early enrollment to The University of Tennessee School of Medicine and received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1948. Dr. Ramirez was a family physician who practiced medicine in Starr County, Texas for 43 years. He established the first hospital in the county at Roma in 1958.

US Air Force Service

In 1950, after the completion of his residency, Dr. Ramirez and his wife relocated to Roma to establish the first family practice clinic in the community. While practicing medicine in Roma, Dr. Ramirez elected to enlist in the U.S. Air Force. He and his family relocated to Tokyo, Japan where Dr. Ramirez would serve from 19551957. Following his service in the Air Force, Dr. Ramirez and his family moved back to Roma.

First Hospital in Starr County

Soon after in August 1958, he opened the first hospital in Starr County to better serve the needs of the patients in his family practice clinic. Named after his grandfather, The Manuel Ramirez Memorial Clinic and Hospital operated until 1975. Physicians, surgeons and other specialists traveled to Roma on a regular basis to meet the needs of patients who could not travel to a larger city for health care. Previously, the only hospitals had been 55 miles to the east in McAllen or 90 miles to the west in Laredo.

Hurricane Beulah

In 1967 Dr. Ramirez, then the county’s Public Health Service Director, found himself leading the effort to aid nearly 14,000 refugees who had escaped flooding caused by Hurricane Beulah.

Hurricane Beulah made landfall in the Rio Grande Valley as a major Category 3 hurricane that dumped record rainfall on the area. Dr. Ramirez and another physician cared for refugees for two days before outside help arrived. Shortly after, Dr. Ramirez received a special citation from the U.S. Surgeon General for his efforts to help his community recover from Hurricane Beulah. Starr County Judge

In 1969 Dr. Ramirez was appointed to the position of Starr County Judge, a role he filled until 1978. As Starr County Judge, Dr. Ramirez was instrumental in managing the construction of a new, modern hospital, and helped to create a hospital taxation district to support its operation.

On February 15, 1975, the day the Ramirez Hospital closed its doors in Roma, the Starr County Memorial Hospital opened in Rio Grande City.

University of Texas Board Member

He was also appointed by Gov. Bill Clements to a term on The University of Texas System Board of Regents from 1989 until 1995. Dr. Ramirez has been honored by U.S. presidents including Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush. Dr. Ramirez also served as Vice President for South Texas Programs at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio, where he established the Med/Ed Program, which has encouraged over 2,000 students in the Lower Rio Grande Valley and Laredo to pursue health science careers. During his career, Dr. Ramirez made it his goal to bring the needs of medically underserved Texans to the attention of several United States presidents and numerous state and federal medical organizations. Dr. Ramirez’s appointments and honors include president of Texas Medical Association (the first Hispanic to serve in this capacity), Family Doctor of the Year (announced by President Jimmy Carter), vice chairman of the Committee on Health Care of the Poor (American Medical Association), regent of the Military Medical School in Bethesda (an appointment by President Ronald Reagan), and regent of The University of Texas System (an appointment by Gov. Bill Clements) from 19891995 (UT Health Science Center News 2006).

Rio Grande City Grulla honored Dr. Mario E Ramirez by naming an Elementary school after him. The name Dr. Mario E. Ramirez will always be known as one who care for his community health wise and civically. He inspired many local graduates to pursue medical careers. Dr Ramirez will always be remembered as Starr County’s own super doctor.
