Roma ISD School Board Names Carlos Gonzalez Lone Finalist for Superintendent Position
RGC High School Law Enforcement C.T.E. Student Puts Muscle into Winning Female Obstacle Course!
The Roma ISD Board has followed a lengthy process in determining the finalist, hiring the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Executive Search Services to direct the search. TASB consultants received input from staff and the community to discuss leadership qualities of the new superintendent. The profile developed from this input was used by the board and consultants in evaluating the applicants for the position. Out of the initial applicant pool, the board selected six applicants for initial interview and then three applicants were invited back for a second interview. The board is scheduled to vote to offer a contract to Carlos Gonzalez on or after May 18, 2022. Prior to serving as Zapata County ISD Superintendent for the past five years, Gonzalez was the Roma ISD Career and Technical Education Director
located in New Braunfels, Texas. She had to carry a 160 pound dummy more than her weight into an obstacle course that took more than 1 hour. She placed 3rd place in the entire state of Texas. She is under the direction of Mr. Alberto Betancourt law enforcement teacher. The Roma ISD Board of Trustees named Carlos Gonzalez, current superintendent for Zapata County ISD, as the lone finalist for the Roma ISD superintendent position at its April 27, 2022 meeting. By law, the board must now wait 21 days before voting to hire Gonzalez to be the new superintendent for Roma ISD. Mr. Gonzalez is slated to replace retiring Roma ISD Superintendent Carlos Guzman.

We competed by making Chili, Ribs, Carne Guisada and Pan De Campo. We competed in El Sauz, Starr County Fair Cook Off, San Isidro Cook Off and The Chili Cook Off in Rio Grande City. Texas Delta Theta Master Celebrates Successful Year
Texas Delta Theta Master of Beta Sigma Phi enjoyed its last meeting of the chapter year with a lovely meal at Jesse’s Enchanted Place. President Vangie Anderson presided over the business meeting, and those attending reported on the beautiful Founder’s Day celebration held at Versailles on April 28 and the Sweetheart Dance held on April 30. At Founder’s Day, members were recognized for their Silver Circle and Gold Circle achievements, and Josie Guerra was recognized for Diamond Circle status, with continuous membership in Beta Sigma Phi for sixty years. At the Sweetheart Dance, member Elda Perez presented her granddaughter, Graciella I. Perez, daughter of Gilberto Perez III and Maria Teresa Perez, as a debutante. Throughout the year, the chapter held several community service projects, participated in the Starr County Council fundraiser for community entities in need, and are presenting five scholarships to Starr County high school graduates

Congressman Henry Cuellar was joined by Starr County Judge Eloy Vera, the family of World War II Veteran Santana Gonzalez (Deceased) to unveil his Veteran Headstone at the Starr County Cemetery. Public Officials, local veterans and community leaders were present to witness this historic event. U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) presented a Veteran headstone for the grave of World War II Veteran, Private First Class Santana Gonzalez. “Private First Class Santana
Gonzalez is an American hero, and this headstone is a symbol of respect and gratitude for his service during World War II,” said Congressman Cuellar. “Mr. Santana was a lifelong member of VFW Post 8526 of Rio Grande City, and is very well remembered by our community. This is a proud moment
for all of us here in Starr County as we honor Mr. Gonzalez and his family.” In 1973, a fire at the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) in St. Louis, Missouri, destroyed veteran’s records, including that of Private First Class Santana Gonzalez. Without record of his military service, Mr. Gonzalez was not able to receive a veteran headstone at the time of his death. Congressman Cuellar’s Office, together with the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC), was able to
reconstruct Mr. Gonzalez’s military records and obtained a Certification of Military Service, allowing the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration to issue a Veteran headstone for Private First Class Santana Gonzalez. The case was opened on February 17, 2022, and was successfully closed on April, 22, 2022.
