The Broken Chain We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone for part of us went with you, the day that God called you home. You left us beautiful memories, your love is still our guide, and though we cannot see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same; but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.

These prices reflect the good to choice cattle, the plainer cattle would be $10-$20 behind these figures. There was a very good demand on stocker cows due to the rain we received. There was a little increase in packer cow prices, this week market was great! Looking forward for a good run this week. If there is anything Triple G Livestock Auction can do to help market your cattle give us a call (956) 487-5551 or (956) 437-1988. Stop by at Zulma’s Mexican Restaurant and try our homemade tacos and food plates!

Roma begins Escandon Avenue Drainage Project The City has begun work on the Escandon Avenue Drainage Project. The project will help drain storm water that accumulates at the intersection of Escandon Ave and US 83. This water will be piped to the drainage system at Ebony Avenue. The project consists of installing 748 feet of 24” drainage pipe along US 83. An inlet will be placed at the lowest point of Escandon and various locations along the highway to help minimize ponding. The project will tie to an inlet found on North Ebony Avenue that is connected to a 60” storm pipe that runs to the Rio Grande.

The drainage pipe will help residents of Escandon Avenue. Currently, a team of city workers must install a series of pumps and discharge hoses to drain the area. The project was designed by S&B Infrastructure, the same engineering firm behind the Ebony Avenue Drainage Project, and will be constructed by MJA Construction. The drainage pipe is being provided by TXDoT and the cost of the project is being funded by the Municipal Drainage Utility System implemented by the City of Roma last year. This is the “drainage fee” found in Roma resident’s monthly bill.

May Day is an ancient festival that welcomes spring and was once celebrated widely on May 1 every year. May Day falls approximately halfway between the spring equinox and the summer solstice and has its origins in pre-Christian times. May Day commemorates festivals of fertility and agriculture. Ancient Romans celebrated the festival of Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers. But May Day is also related to the Celtic festival of Beltane, a springtime festival of optimism, and the Germanic festival of Walpurgis Night, which also celebrates the arrival of spring. Many past May Day celebrations included spending time outdoors standing around bonfires and dancing. A traditional British May Day celebration included crowning a May Queen and dancing around a Maypole, which was covered in ribbons. In the United States, May 1 is also recognized as Law Day and is meant to highlight the importance of law in the foundation of the country and how law benefits society.

Most places have a plethora of house sparrows Feeding birds near my motorhome at Rancho Lomitas has a couple of disadvantages. For one thing, it sometimes attracts

rodents such as cottontail rabbits and Mexican ground-squirrels. For another, it can attract house sparrows who compete with the native birds for food. Since house sparrows are mostly urban birds, I thought being in a wild area we’d be without them and we were, for years. Then one day, a few years ago, some house sparrows chanced by, stayed, and became a

flock of dozens. I told myself to enjoy them, after-all they’re wild things and have some interesting characteristics, but they consumed a sizable and increasing portion of the bird food I put out. Despite my reluctance to welcome them, I thought, they’re here to stay. WRONG! Climate change, in this rare case, to the rescue. Summer in 2018 was exceptionally hot and dry. The house sparrow flock either moved back to town or died. They’re gone and I haven’t seen even one for months. Maybe they are, basically, just city folk. House sparrows have an interesting history. They’re native to the Middle East and over many years have expanded their range until today they’re found throughout the world except for places with very extreme climates.

In fact, they’re the most widely distributed bird of all the wild bird species. Recent estimates put their numbers globally at over 500 million! They were introduced into the U. S. in Brooklyn, New York, in 1851 and later in San Francisco and Salt Lake City. Because of the source of those introductions, in the U. S. the name English sparrow is quite common. Can there be anyone who doesn’t recognize a house sparrow? Males have a black bib, gray crown, rusty brown back of the eyes and a grayish breast and belly. Females have a plain, light tan breast and belly and a light tan streak behind

the eyes. Both have a single, slight wing bar and are about 6 inches long with males slightly the larger. They have a pecking order at the top of which are the older males with the largest black bibs. Unlike most birds, they’re quite approachable and much prefer being around people and their buildings. Our ranch suited them fine. You won’t find them in deep woodlands or on broad, open prairies. Most people consider them to be pugnacious and they’re frequently seen squabbling amongst themselves. That’s because they’re social birds who love to be in flocks, roost together

at night and build their nests in close proximity. They enjoy dust and water baths together and communal singing. All sounds a bit like us doesn’t it? Their diet consists almost entirely of seeds and grain although they’re a bit opportunistic and eat some buds, berries and food scraps. They eat bits of grit like small, sharp sand grains to aid digestion. The young are fed mostly insects during their first couple of weeks. They probably need the animal protein. Their life span is surprising; one house sparrow is known to have lived 15 years and 9 months! No species is without the necessity of struggling for survival and house sparrows are no exception. They face a host of predators including owls, hawks, and several mammals, especially cats. House sparrows are also infected by parasites and diseases like salmonella and E. coli. It’s worth noting that they’re a winter host for west nile virus. Just as the house sparrows competed for food at my bird feeders, so too, they compete with native birds such as bluebirds, purple martins and tree swallows for nesting sites. Various efforts to prevent their detrimental effects on other species have had only moderate success. While their numbers are huge, there has been a population decline of some 3.5% during the past few decades. While they’re certainly not the beauties of the bird world, one can enjoy watching their antics and must admire their toughness.
