Respond to COVID-19 Outbreak: •Expenses of caring for PHA staff and residents who have

tested positive, but do not require immediate hospitalization, including: Payment for increases in sick leave allowances for PHA staff; Physical, personnel, or security costs incurred to limit movement; Costs to safely transport residents that tested positive to a quarantine facility; and Costs of supporting residents in quarantine such as health-related supplies (e.g., masks and cleaning supplies).

•Expenses to safely transport residents/staff in need of medical attention; •Expenses incurred because of COVID-19 restrictions impacting PHA operations (e.g., paying for transportation expenses for PHA staff who rely on public transit that is no longer available); •Costs to facilitate and coordinate with local schools and local governments receiving funds from the Department of Education for the education of students in public housing households: Internet connection infrastructure; and Tablets or other low-cost computers for students.

Divide For Texas Students Governor Greg Abbott, the Texas Education Agency (TEA), and Dallas Independent School District (DISD) launched Operation Connectivity, a statewide initiative to deliver internet connectivity and device solutions for school districts, families, and students in Texas. Operation Connectivity was originally started in Dallas to address the lack of high speed internet and/or home laptops for many DISD students which caused an interruption to their learning, as education in the classroom transitioned to at-home digital instruction due to COVID-19.

This initiative now aims to provide

internet connectivity to hundreds of thousands of students statewide.

“As Texas students continue their education at home through virtual instruction, it is essential that we provide them with the resources they need to connect and communicate online,” said Governor Abbott. “I applaud Dr. Hinojosa and DISD for developing this innovative initiative for Dallas schools, and look forward to expanding Operation Connectivity statewide so that we can implement reliable and effective solutions that will close the digital divide for students across the Lone Star State.”

The Operation Connectivity Task Force will gather critical information to determine which children in the state do not have internet access and/or home devices, document best practices, identify and secure technology solutions for broadband and devices, develop actionable playbooks for districts across the state, identify funding needs and help secure resources, demonstrate “lighthouse” examples, including at DISD, and push for federal and state-level policies that connect more students learning at home to available technology resources.

The task force will convene as a full group every month to review progress and resolve roadblocks, which will help to ensure the overall effort stays ontrack. Working teams that support the larger task force will meet on a more regular basis to move forward on achieving milestones.

Sales Tax Holidays for Water-Efficient and ENERGY STAR® Products Set for May 23-25 As Texas businesses slowly reopen their doors amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar is reminding families and businesses that they can save on the purchase of certain water- and energyefficient products during the state’s Water-Efficient Products and ENERGY STAR® sales tax holidays.

The holidays, created by the Texas Legislature, both take place Saturday, May 23, through Monday, May 25.

“Inefficient appliances and outdated water systems put a tremendous strain on our power grids and water supplies,” Hegar said. “Even in these uncertain times, Texans can take advantage of this sales tax holiday to buy more energy-efficient items, support local businesses and save money.

This is the fifth year for the Water-Efficient Products Sales Tax Holiday. Products displaying a WaterSense® label or logo can be purchased tax free for personal or business use. These include showerheads, bathroom sink faucets and accessories, toilets, urinals and landscape irrigation controls.

The sales tax holiday also applies to lawn and garden products that help conserve water outdoors. Items qualifying for the exemption include soaker or drip-irrigation hoses; moisture controls for sprinkler or irrigation systems; mulch; and plants, trees and grasses. These items can be

purchased tax free for residential use only.

There’s no limit to the number of water-efficient or water-conserving products you can purchase tax free. For more information on the Water-Efficient Products Sales Tax Holiday, visit the Comptroller’s website.

During the ENERGY STAR Sales Tax Holiday, certain energyefficient products displaying the ENERGY STAR logo can be purchased tax free, including air conditioners priced at $6,000 or less, refrigerators priced at $2,000 or less, ceiling fans, fluorescent light bulbs, dishwashers, dehumidifiers and clothes washing machines.
